I'm expecting a lot of lists comprising of films from the 90's and 00s.

Fo'Sure Dawg.... Anyway I don't think I want be messing with AFI Best 100 list since it was compromised by people who actually STUDY film... And I'm only done with my first year of college... THese are movies that had a profound impact on film... I mean Rebel Without a Cause is perhaps one of the most dated movies I've seen and Blackboard Jungle is way better, however Rebel had a more profound impact on film hence why it's on the list.

The AFI list is pretty tight. I really don't see a movie that can be taken out of there. Maybe we should do a list of movies from the last say, 30 years, that in 50 years will be considered classics. (And 300 and Sin City should not be on people's lists)

Not a bad idea but what's the point? You have your favorite movies, I have my favorite movies... Who's to say what will be classic and waht won't? The AFI list is simply there for people who enjoy film and want to see the movies that have shaped it over the years.

Since when hasn't GodFather been considered a classic?

The AFI list was also compiled by people who had their own favorite movies which were not necessarily "classics". I was thinking that collectively we can hammer out a list of "modern classics" that we feel have shaped the film industry in the last 30 years.

Yeah, Jaws, Star Wars, Alien, etc.

Here's some options, some of them I'm not too sure about though:
- Schindler's List (even though it was already on there)
- Shawshank Redemption
- Pulp Fiction
- Goodfellas
- Philadelphia
- Usual Suspects
- Silence of the Lambs
- Apocalypse Now
- The Shining
- Aliens
- T2
- Full Metal Jacket
- Fargo
- Toy Story
- The Deer Hunter
- Ghandi

Your forgetting a key difference the people who made those lists are SCHOLARS, they study a film for a living, and trust me there's a huge difference between watching a lot of films and studying them...

And I understand that but it's something that would be entertaining. I'm not saying we are making an end all, be all of lists. We'd be making a list because it's fun and it would be nice to have intelligent conversations debating if a movie should be considered a 'classic'.

Plus how do you know that any of us don't have scholarly film backgrounds?

Maltese Falcon should be on that list

1.Citizen Kane
2.Casablanca
3.The GodFather
4.Gone With The Wind
5.Lawrence Of Arabia
6.The Wizard Of Oz
7.The Graduate
8.On The Waterfront
9.Schindler's List
10.Singin' in the Rain
I knew that was going to happen.

I think AFI's list is fairly accurate. I'd put Goodfellas and Pyscho in place of Singin' In The Rain and Lawrence Of Arabia.

Why? And the follow-up question is it because you don't like musicals and epic long character studies?

Um, yeah, basically. And Hitchcock needs to be in a Top 10, as does Scorsese.

I only ask simply because it something that needs to be acknowledged when making any type of TOP 10 list.. That there are movies out there that are good but simply aren't our cup of tea. To not have a musical in the top 10 would be a travesty given the popularity and influence of the genre itself. As for Lawerence of Arabia, it's really an amazingly well done film that has influenced generations of film-makers. As for Hitchcock and Scorsese both are amazing and both have numerous films on the best 100 list. Plus there's already a Gangster picture in the top 10 especially since Goodfellas borrows quite a bit from the Godfather. Godfather is what marks a HUGE shift in the way gangster pictures are done without it there'd be no Goodfellas, Scorsese would still be making gangster pictures like he made Mean Streets, it's what made Departed stand out since it was a departure back to old school gangster films. That's not to say Goodfellas didn't introduce many of it's own concepts however I'd say Godfather was more influential.

Is Superman the Movie on there? That revolutionized the way people looked at superhero films back in the day. If not, then yeah- that's a classic, imo.

- Fargo
- Toy Story
- The Deer Hunter
- Ghandi

Full Metal Jacket is definately a classic, especially among military personnel.

Replace Wizard of Oz with Star Wars and the list is perfect.

Oh and I would switch the order of Citizen Kane and Casablanca around.

Blade Runner (I love this film)
Fritz lang's Metropolis
2001:ASO
Casshern
Jaws
Star Wars
Nosfuratu
Citizen Kane

my short list.
