N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton

I mean a lot of people do messed up things and Im not giving Dre a pass necessarily. But I think it's gotten to the point for me where it's weird how much people are jumping on this movie. Not so much in thread but just around the net.
It's very weird to me because alot of people give others a pass but dont seem to give Dre a pass.
-Sean Penn beat and held Madonna hostage,
-Clint Eastwood (my personal favorite actor of all time) was a really bad womanizer, and not in the just "he got with many women type way" but he actually treated women like s***.
-John Lennon was verbally abusive to his child and was violent toward women
EDIT: I can't believe i forgot this one: Roman Freaking Polanski. Didnt he, at the least, have sex with a 13 year old girl? We all still love Chinatown, The Pianist, and Rosemary's Baby

The list can go on an on from actors, to musicians, etc. But a lot of people seem to be giving a pass to some of these guys. By giving a pass I mean they don't go into threads, chatrooms, or general convos about these guys and say "Well so and so did this". I'm sure Robert Downey Jr. wasn't the best father or husband when he was on drugs but we've all accepted him and love watching him work.

Not many are actually condoning Dre's actions. Hell on the Hype I dont see anyone condoning his actions at all. I think most of us have said that they did the wrong things by making Dre out to be a saint. But to keep harping it at the point and saying things like "People should be offended about what these people did" while ignoring other artist's transgressions is really weird to me

http://hiphopdx.com/news/id.35171/t...e-working-with-john-singleton-on-tupac-biopic

He may be doing a biopic with Singleton. A few other sites have mentioned it but it's rumor right now.

Yeah theyve been trying to get funding for that for a while. I remember around Notorious' release they were working on it still.

I think this will push the Tupac biopic forward. Their arent that many rappers like who would make a good story. Tupac is def. one of them and they need to bring it to the screen.

Biggie (did that)
Death Row (covered that kinda in SoC and will likely cover it in Tupac biopic)
NWA (did that)
Bad Boy vs Death Row/East vs West/Biggie-Pac Murders (kinda covered)
are the hip hop biopics that I think would be really interesting to see.

I'm not trying to be "that guy", but in my opinion, it's because they're white.

Most white actors are forgiven for anything and return to movies - Tom Cruise, Sean Connery, Matthew Broderick, Mel Gibson, etc.

That's what I was implying actually.

Not trying to be "that guy" either. But it's pretty blatant to me.

But I also dont think it's race. For instance, when Ray Rice did his thing with his wife so many people stopped messing with him (me included and Im a Ravens fan), but then we all still listen to Chris Brown, people still listen to the Beatles, we all still watched Terrence Howard in Iron Man...

It's weird the way people pick and choose which people to hate. I think it has to do with sports, namely football, and hip hop/rap are seen as "thug" cultures when blacks participate in them.

That's a good point. Another example is that R. Kelly is still around.

BUT, on the flip side though, there was that outpouring of support for Roman Polanski, which even included Martin Scorsese, which to this day is still incredibly baffling to me. The guy's a monster.

Woody Allen's still around. There was clearly something odd about that whole thing.

Another one is Bryan Singer, who, although I love this work, I feel deep down there's something fishy there.

But just with the examples here... it's kind of noticeable how relentlessly nonstop the media is with Bill Cosby, and they're still having a field day with it like they did with Michael Jackson. I'm not comparing which accusations are "worse" for ANY of these people - they're all bad and disgusting (though I don't think MJ really did anything; he was an easy target) - but it seems like the media gets more "excited" about this stuff when it's a black man doing it.

We'll see how long this Jared Fogle thing stays on TV... It'll probably be an afterthought in two weeks. :whatever:

But seriously, the examples... Kobe Bryant, Michael Vick, Tiger Woods... it goes on forever. Roman Polanski's situation should be on the news 24/7 until he's brought to justice.

That's true

To be fair, I think Jared will be an afterthought because he's not as famous. Im not saying he's not well known but someone like Cosby is a barrier breaker for black comedians and is so beloved by Americans no matter the race. So I get why theyre still on it as they should be

But I dont really get into this whole thing, I just think it's stupid that certain members here are really being hypocritical.

In lighter and more related news: It's number one again. I have a feeling it'll be number one next week too. Hell looking at the release schedule the only thing that MIGHT take it down is Transporter Refueled. I dont know what the interest is like for that, but I havent seen it advertised much. Ive seen over 10 movies in theaters this summer and Ive only seen the trailer I think twice.

So how long before sites such as Deadline or Latino Review report the headline "F. Gary Gray in talks with Marvel to direct Black Panther!"

I didn't find Cube wrecking the executive office to be a bad thing. He was justified in those actions. The guy lied and said he would make it up to him ( money wise) if his solo album did well and it did. He shouldn't have had to beg for money he earned. If I were in cubes shoes I probably would have done the same.

If you were in Cube's shoes you are in jail. He wasn't justified at all unless the deal was in writing and he violated a written agreement. Verbal agreements mean nothing in business.

Yeah, he's always been a go-to director for moderate action and inner city type flicks, but he'll be pulling a Colin Treverrow now. This ****ing thing made 100 mil and no one expected it to anything but maybe be a sleeper.

I'll be first in line for whatever he directs. :drl:

There's no way Transporter will take it down. The chances of that movie even opening at #3 are zilch.

Plus it gives a black director a chance to try again in the superhero genre. He may be better than Tim Story in that regard.

Coogler or Gray will probably get Black Panther. Even though I haven't seen this yet I can tell from the trailers that Gray has a great visual eye for big blockbuster type of films so quite honestly he would work for any big Marvel movie and not just Black Panther.

He previously dropped out of being up for the Cap 2 job to do Compton.

It's race and image.

The cinematography in this film was amazing. The Compton scenes are unique - really demonstrating the gritty environment of the city.

When the entire group is arrested outside of the studio, that scene is absolutely gorgeous. With the use of natural daylight, allowing the white sky to light the characters, it just felt so real. Also, before the group breaks up, you'll notice that the film is primarily handheld - giving a "documentary-style" feel to the Compton scenes.

But, once the characters establish themselves in the music industry and lead successful lives, essentially leaving Compton, you will notice that the second half of the picture has much more stationary compositions. It makes a shift in both the narrative and technique.

Such a great film :)

Yeah, the cinematography was just astounding.

I'd even say that Gray is our greatest African American director... easily better than Spike Lee.

You think Ryan Coogler is on their radar?

Well it's been widely known that Gray dropped out of directing Winter Soldier to do this, so Marvel could very well still have him in their sights.

I wouldn't go thaaat far just yet. Straight Outta Compton is just about the only film on his filmography that I have really loved. If he continues to make films like this one, then we'll talk :oldrazz:

Their second choice didn't turn out so bad.

Agreed. Spike hasn't made a good movie in a few years but he has several in his filmography. Everyone has a right to their opinion of course but I personally think some people are going overboard about SOC. I thought it was a good--not great--film.

Not exactly a difficult accomplishment, heh.

And I don't want to start with the best asian/hispanic/black director stuff. I'd put him in the realm of one of the greater directors, period. He knows how to shoot a ****ing scene.

What was Spike's last great film? I don't think he's done anything really great since the 1990's.

He might be at risk for losing cred for his 90's films due to how bad the Oldboy remake was.
