Nah, it goes deeper underground to the old pneumatic transit system and begins powering itself up and pulls a "Ghostbusters 2" by feeding off of all of NYC's negative emotions.

I just noticed a goof in this episode. When Venom has Spidey pinned on the ground in their first fight, and tells him, "We're Venom;" they're on the concrete. But when Spider-man webs Venom's face and kicks him away, he was clearly on the grass. Then the next shot shows him on the concrete again.
Just for the record, it doesn't matter to me; and doesn't take away from the moment at all.
