Fantasy Netflix's Live-Action Avatar: The Last Airbender General Discussion Thread

Oh well, it’s for the best. I would rather they walk away then make another series and it’s like the shymalon movie. Good on them for sticking to the principals. Surely we don’t actually need a live action series with the excellent cartoon right there

Never really understood why they wanted to do a live-action retelling of ATLA. Instead of going back to it or Korra even, they should create new stories set in this universe. There’s so much potential here and they’re wasting it by trying to retell old stories (that were done incredibly well and don’t need to be retold).

I have an idea. Just go with me for a second.

We bring in M. Night Shymalan. Shymalan directs every episode of the live-action series...

That's it. That's the idea.

I was so onboard with this. I just got into Avatar this summer and while watching it i would constantly think to myself that this would translate so well into a big budgeted film or tv series if done right. If done right this could have been big, like Stranger Things big. But with the creators gone, i think this thing is DOA.

I wonder if part of the issue is Netflix's recent trend of canceling/ending their original shows after 3/4 seasons. I cant imagine they get to cover everything in TLA in a span of just 3/4 seasons with most likely 10 episodes per season.

That makes sense. They may want to truncate the story and the creators didn't.

I agree with the sentiment tha ti never got the point of a live action remake. But it could be good. However, without the creators that kills my confidence.

Also, I agree that I don't see why not just make another series in the world of Avatar. Why remake the show? With such limited work, they've already created such a large, intricate, rich and interesting world/universe. Explore that. People will be on board. And it has a chance to be as big as Harry Potter imo

I'm all for keeping shows short but yeah you gotta give creators leeway as well

Lets say Netflix has their way and gives the show 4 seasons (10 episodes each) which is standard, the final episode would be around 'The Crossroads of Destiny' imagine having the show cancelled/ending after that episode .

Yeah this is a 6 season show.

Hell even when the movie was gonna be a trilogy some of us was saying it should be 6 movies. Even taking out filler, it's a pretty dense show where you don't wanna cut too much out

You know, even though we’re all upset and i think painting Netflix as the villains here maybe we should take a step back and remember when it comes to tv shows, Netflix knows wtf theyre doing. Theyre still trying to get their act together on the movie front but there is a long list of tv shows over the past decade that could easily contend with some of the best cable networks had to offer. So maybe we shouldnt doom this show off the bat, and im putting myself in that group as well. It sucks that these guys left and I wouldve preferred they stayed and worked it out but I think Netflix has earned the benefit of doubt that theyre still gonna make sure this thing turns out good.

Netflix knows what they're doing when it comes to TV?
Besides them cancelling some shows way too early but:
Iron Fist
The Ranch
The Get Down
Marco Polo
Insatiable
Friends From College
Girlboss
Disjointed
Richie Rich
Haters Back Off
Real Rob
Fuller House
Real Rob
The Gilmore Girls revival
Later seasons of House of Cards
Later seasons of 13 Reasons Why
Later seasons of Orange is the New Back
...I could go on....

All of those are Netflix shows that got a poor to mixed response.

Those shows show that Netflix isn't some infallible force when it comes to TV. If this was HBO I'd give them some slack and even they have a few misses. And I like a lot and love some Netflix shows, but they don't have the cache for me to go to bat for them

Nah, Netflix makes just as much garbage as they do good shows, imo. If this were HBO, who has a much higher batting average overall, I'd kinda agree, but Netflix has earned no such benefit of the doubt from me.

It honestly isn't that close imo. Netflix makes a lot more garbage then quality. For me one of the most annoying things about Netflix is that because of their structure, a lot of the legitimately good shows and movies get buried (see One Day At a Time) under 10 pounds of trash, that gets the same amount of advertising.

Also their whole thing about cancelling good shows after three seasons because their algorithm says it no longer brings in new subscribers... ugh.
Don't remind me. :(

I am sure it has nothing to do with the fact that they don't advertise anything after the first season that isn't a reality show or Stranger Things! :argh:

Thats one thing I’ll never understand. Why the Heck doesnt Netflix bother to advertise their content anymore? They’ll spend 200 million to get Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling to headline a movie but then they wont bother spend a couple mill put ads out there to tell people about it. I remember 5 years ago there were giant billboard ads in Times Square advertising Daredevil and Arrested Development and OiTB but they never put that much effort again.

They probably have analytics that say it doesn't move the new subscribers numbers enough. Netflix seems to just like to have a crap ton of content to show they have it. The names attached are there to add to the prestige of it I guess. To show it isn't just trash in theory I guess.

They should just remake the whole animated series again only this time use 'Studio Mir',who Netflix have done business with before (with 'Voltron:Legendary Defender' and 'Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeast') and perhaps give us that 4th season.
