Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Watched a fan edit of the trailer set to the Witcher 3 soundtrack.........................and yeah its just so much better. :funny::funny:

I get it, they wanted to use the song as its called "Monster" but that doesnt mean to say it fits AT ALL. Just a bizzare choice but I doubt it will appear in the show, the music from the first series was actually decent, not Witcher 3 levels but at least fit the show. This, er, doesnt.:funny:

Hate it. I neither see nor feel anything related to the Polish/Slavic/European culture, narrative, dialogues, aesthetics, music and visuals. Nothing.

Classic americanised Netflix adaptation.

Everything special about Wiedźmin is gone. Poor men's Game of Thrones, that what this series really is.

Looks good. Shame Yennefer didn't really any great scenes in the trailer but I'm looking forward to older Ciri doing more now.

This is the way it goes in the books as well sometimes main characters are barely mentioned or even appear for an entire book before being the main focus again, Yen & Geralt come in and out of focus where as Ciri gets the most attention overall, will be interesting to see how the series handles that.

Oh thanks for that. I own all the audiobooks but haven't got around to them yet. Good to know.

I mean, there are issues with it as a dramatic tool, but it does kind of make sense in terms of the setting. Both witchers and sorceresses have greater-than-human lifespans, after all. Absences and departures that would be "for the rest of your life" in a normal human in a dark low fantasy setting, can instead be "hey, Yen, its been a few years", in terms of impact and casualness.

( setting aside the casualty rate from their respective professions, anyway, but that would apply even if they never left line of sight )

I was at Wal-Mart last nite and they had a new Blood Of Elves with a Henry Cavil and Freya Allan show tie in cover. I think it's A really cool cover and will probably pick up a copy this weekend.

I apologize if this isn't the thread for it, but I just saw The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. Good movie, I give it a 7/10. On the plus side, great animation and a good (if slightly sad) story. On the downside, the villain was just not strong or unlikeable enough, and the music was a little heavy handed at times. But absolutely well worth a watch, if you're in the mood for some pretty spectacular animation.

I'm about on the same wavelength of you on the movie. My other issue with the movie is I don't see much of the anime Vesemir in the Kim Bodnia version. Yes this is Vesemir when he's younger and hasn't experienced certain things yet, but I should still see some similarities and through lines for their characters.

Just for example, you can see similarities between Dominic Cooper and Charles Slattery as young and older Howard Stark.

But the animation is really good, and I did like Vesemir's origin story for the most part.

Yeah again my only problem is the villain in the movie, a human sorceress who hates witchers. But you learn later that a witcher was responsible for killing her mother, so how could you not have at least some sympathy for her? Strange selection for a villain.
Otherwise everything else about the movie is terrific. After seeing it twice I'll revise my grade and give it a very enthusiastic 8 out of 10.

I actually had no idea Season 2 was even dropping this week because I've been so out of the loop on the marketing for this, but damn that just makes this week even better between this and NWH coming out.

The cinematography definitely seems way better this season. On my recent rewatch of S1, that was the thing I noticed was the most jarring. It was pretty by the numbers TV directing and editing, and for a story that was TRYING to seamlessly bounce between 3 timelines, you really need cohesive editing and visual storytelling.

I've read the books enough times that I wasn't lost but so many important details just slip by in that first season. They breeze through locations, environments, don't linger on creatures etc It kinda felt like it was so busy trying to race through all the lore they didn't stop to let you actually absorb a lot of it.

I've got similar complaints for Wheel of Time on Amazon too, but at least that's only one timeline so it's more cohesive to follow.

VERY keen for S2 though and now that they're up to Blood of Elves and all characters on the same timeline, I think it's gonna be on much more solid ground when it comes to good storytelling.

Ciri training

Ciri with more Jedi training than Rey already...

Well for Wheel of Time I felt like they were rushing through a lot of character development in the first two episodes that it kind of gave me a lot of issues. Specifically with one guy killing his own wife and glossing over that, and no one really seeming to care that their friend is dead and their best friend's wife is dead.
