Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Hey, dont get me wrong, ofc anyone is free to voice their opinion. I just think its still too early to dismiss production value as a whole, thats all.
I'm wishing the final thing changes my opinion, but judging by previous publicly released "camera tests" that I remember, 99% chance it's very much indicative of the final quality and I seriously dislike the look.

Oh well, maybe he suddenly grows charisma and changes your mind XD
Like i was repulsed by starfires look and anna diop won me over.
Ive heard cavill was excellent in mission impossible, so who knows, i hope for the best.

Cavill was the usual dull self in MI. Man of Steel is probably his greatest performance so far. So I'm not holding my breath. At this point I'm hoping supporting cast, genius directing or writing will salvage it somehow for me...

EIther way, it was a rollercoaster: dread -> curiosity -> excitement -> dread.

Also, it looks like Hissrich posted the first set photo.

Don't like the hair or lack of scars but I guess the scars will come once the show gets moving but not good first look and LOL at that Triss casting oh well
lets see how this goes

In the books does the character use signs like he does in the games?

Seen about a 100 meme's of Cavill as an old age Legolas lol

Never played the games or read the books, people happy with his look?

We're just going to have to live with the ugly wig. HBO pumps way more money into GOT than Netflix is ever likely to give The Witcher and their wigs look extraordinarily fake too.

Yeah, for all their top-notch production values, GoT’s wig game still pretty much sucks as well.

It seems wigs are a difficult area in general. :csad::D:

Not like in the games. In the games he's almost a mage. In the books he uses signs to start a fire or heat something up, to calm a horse, to move objects, to protect himself (a-ka Quen). It's more like telepathy and concentration. It's also very brief.

Hmmm, I hope they exaggerate this aspect then.

In some respects games exaggerate his signs (like throwing fire out of his hands, or making people do his bidding), in other it's rather similar to games.

I want them to use the ones that would make for good visuals and make combat more dynamic. I don't think we've seen much/enough on the battlemage front (my favourite character type in RPGs ;) ) in mainstream fantasy films and shows so far.

Yeah I hope they don't go cheap on the signs if they do indeed use them I don't see how they don't
great visual to see him not see a specter then use the Yrden sign and all of sudden it's in his face Jump scare for the crowd that likes that type of crap lol

This is one area they have to allocate enough money towards (if they intend to include them in a similar way to the games that is). This would look good for a trailer too.

I like battlemage type too. It was instantly alluring for me when I played The Witcher 2 for the first time. The guy wasn't only good with his swords, but also could enchant stuff, use alchemy. But since the showrunner said they're adapting the books, not games, we shouldn't exclude the possibility of them toning down his abilities. Either way, I'm pretty sure he will use stuff like "force push" or "quen". Putting people to sleep a la Kylo Ren. But I seriously doubt about fire or lightning bolts.

What I want them to keep in case of signs - how they're executed. It's a symbol he draws in air with his hand. For me it's more interesting than some flashy Matrix type fight with kewl camera angels, slo-mo and so on.

As OutofBoose mentioned, the signs are mentioned in the books, but they don't appear to work mechanically like they do in the games. Also, Geralt never frequently uses them in battle like he does in the games either.

In the game, the signs are a like go-to strategy or attack technique you can use constantly in battle as long as you let them refresh. They are not like that in the books at all. They are almost mentioned as sort of off-hand things. They are used even less than Force powers are in the Star Wars books.

Thanks for that. I'll keep my hopes in check (even though I'd prefer the full works including fire and lightning :cwink: ).
