Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

As for re-sheathing the sword, Geralt is not a normal human. He's a mutant who has enhanced skills and genetics. His senses are highly enhanced. He's stronger and faster than a normal man. He is likely a better sword fighter than most other soldiers on the planet. Sheathing a sword is probably not even a thing for him if it's on his back.

LOL we can go in circles on this all day long.

That said!

The ones who went into battle weren't mutant monster hunters who have enhanced senses and know how to use magic.

Witchers are monster hunters who are bred for combat essentially. They aren't normal run of the mill soldiers.

For a tv show it is fine. It looks cool so why not?
But 100% you will never see him draw it while he is wearing it on his back not fully at least.

Pretty sure I've seen Blade draw and sheath his no problem in his films.

NETFLIX’S EPIC NEW SERIES THE WITCHER DEBUTS TEASER ART AND FIRST LOOK PHOTOS

Straight from Netflix, Emma Appleton is Renfri now. So this means the rumors that Millie Brady as Renfri was recast are true.

Not sure what happened. Honestly, based on looks alone, Brady looked like she would've been a good candidate for Yennefer. Oh well. Not sure if it was a performance thing or a chemistry thing.

Also, they are officially naming him "Jaskier" and not "Dandelion." Jaskier is the character's original name in Polish. Honestly, Dandelion was more of an adaptive choice anyway since apparently a direct translation of his name into English is Buttercup.

I doubt it (not fully) but even so his sword was based on a katana. Geralts looks more like a longsword or bastard sword which is about 10 inches longer (same length hilt).

Edit just checked you are correct he does draw it. But it is a very short blade and he has it held low on his back. The hilts top is level to his shoulder. You can't even see it when he faces you.

At least it's not Dandillion. Seriously, I was getting low-key triggered every time the narrator for the audio books kept saying f'n DAN-DILLION. What the frell is a Dan-Dillion?!
That is one of those moments if you are standing outside the studio you go, "What did you just say?"

Kinda wish they'd have recast Yen :o

I feel bad that there's a part of me that wants this to fail because I'm annoyed with both Netflix and Henry Cavill these days, but I know that's not fair to all the people who put their hard work into it and the Witcher fans who are looking forward to it. I won't be surprised if it's deemed disappointing, though. I find most Netflix-produced shows end up that way, save for The Crown and Mindhunter. But especially the ones they hype up so much (looking at you, House of Cards and Stranger Things!).

I like the honesty. :yay:

What about Netflix and Cavill have you annoyed these days, FC?

Also on your opinion of Netflix produced shows, got to agree. The ones I really like, end up getting cancelled or very little love in the first place from them. They now seem destined to be the place that will make me more angry then happy these days.

With Netflix, it's primarily them raising prices while losing content. But also, the way they handled the DD cancellation, completely blindsiding the writers room apparently, was not cool.

With Cavill, it's his general behavior during that whole Superman negotiations nonsense that turned me off. Yes, a lot of it was hearsay, but it also jives with certain quotes from his past, and his toying with fans on Instagram was just childish. He honestly strikes me as someone who has no idea Superman was the best thing to happen to his "career" and he's not a strong enough actor to have much of one outside of it. I suspect The Witcher will make that even more evident, unless Geralt requires minimal acting skills.

Ah, yes. i remember reading that story about the DD crew. There was never any need to act that way. Also yeah, the price issue. They are losing content, and now a lot of their shows feel very much like they need new material each week, while burying a lot of stuff and then wondering why it didn't have enough viewers.

I can definitely get that. I think he'll be okay as Geralt, but I also don't expect him to be very Geralt. Geralt can be very flat, very dry in general, in a fun way. He's seen it all, so very little surprises him. But when it comes to those he cares about, he can be very affectionate. Especially with Ciri. He also knows how to use the smolder with the best of him. Thinking about it, I remember people suggesting Mads Mikkelsen. I don't think it ever hit me how perfect he would be until I finally watched Hannibal.

After rewatching Black Sails, finally playing Witcher 2, rereading the short stories, and watching cutscenes from Witcher 3, I cant help but be angry with myself that I cant get over the Yen, Triss, and Fringilla casting for the show while also being bummed that Zach McGowan isn't Geralt.

I want this to be good. Like really badly. But I won't count on it.

What worries me is the hype some people are giving this as the next "Game of Thrones", no way can it live up that level of popularity. I understand the inevitable comparative as they are set in similar sort of fantasy worlds and therefore demands comparison but its not really very similar in terms of story and character I can see a lot being turned off by it just because its not the same to GoT in terms of episodes being shocking and with immense cliffhangers.

After that final season of GoT I don’t think it will be quite as much of a problem.

Wow, this thread is really depressing. I'll go anticipate it somewhere else.
