Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Cavill looks really good. Not really digging anyone else. I am not a fan of this Witcher medallion. Also why does he only have one sword?

I like the game medallions more. But in the books, I got the sense they were more of a flat coin style shape like this. They are more like medals than a pendant/ornament/charm.

Also, I'm glad they fixed the gambeson at least. The one in the screentest did look like ****.

I'm glad he's wearing greaves, and he's got those shoulder pads/armor pads. But I think he could still use some spikes to round the look out.

For reference, here's how the book covers overseas depicted the medallion:

I believe it's silver patched in his leather armor. More effective than spikes.

I am sure it is more accurate. I just think the game medallion was rather perfect and stood out because of it. I think you can already see there is some game influence in the design here, while at the same time trying to avoid the direct comparison (probably because of the author). I like the sword a lot. It doesn't look run of the mill, while also not looking overly extravagant. Also has some nice heft to it.

Vile, I am curious. Do you have a favorite look from the games?

I don't think the two swords on the back is viable in real life. Sure, he could have put one on a waist scabbard, but if Geralt only ends up with one sword, it won't bother me.

Only one sword is because in the books his silver sword is used MUCH less frequently and is kept on Roach most of the time. (He carries both of them with himself too, but not on his back, if I remember correctly.) Two swords on his back - invention for the games. Games have incomparably more monsters and Geralt fights them on regular basis. In the books Geralt struggles to find a job and earn his living. Witcher job is needed less and less. It sparks existential crisis for him since it's the only thing he was created for. Witchers - dying breed.

I don't know if it's what they will use for the show in terms of explanation. Lauren hinted that the silver sword is coming. But how, what - remains to be seen. So far it's books-accurate.

I've never read a Witcher book or played one of the Witcher video games in my life, but these images have me HYPED. I'm not even a big fan of Cavill himself, but I just think this looks awesome. I cannot wait to binge-watch this: 2019 might end up being a great year for original Netflix content, what with stuff like Umbrella Academy, Tales of the City, and now this (I know I'm forgetting about fifty other equally awesome titles as well, but whatever).

Cavill looks good. Yennifer is too young looking, but they kept the violet eyes so that's a plus. Ciri looks almost the same age as Yennifer so thats no good. Geralt only carrying a silver sword is no good. He should have a steel sword too. And that scabbard is stupid as hell like so many other designs in this adaption.

My favorite is the Grandmaster Wolven gear. It's a medium tier armor. It's School of the Wolf, so it fits with Geralt's style. Geralt is a monster hunter, so he shouldn't be too kitted out. He still has to be able to move around. It maintains some spiked decor and spikes on the greaves. I imagine those could come in handy during a fight. Also, I like the chainmail jacket over the gambeson portion.

Additionally, I like to keep Geralt with short hair and with the Professor's glasses. Why? I like the glasses and they are like a trophy to me. Sort of like Boba Fett's Woookie pelts.

Also, I keep Geralt clean shaven because he hates beards.

If Geralt is hunting a silver-vulnerable beast, why would he need a steel sword? How do you know it's a silver sword anyway? What other designs are stupid in this adaptation? Really curious.

Yeah. And look I'm gonna watch the show and willing to give Chalotra a chance, but she looks young. Look I think Kate Bosworth was sort of too young as Lois Lane and wasn't quite believable enough in that role.

However in the books, Geralt only carries around one sword at a time. Geralt carrying both on his back was a game invention. It looks cool don't get me wrong, but this show is adapting the books not the games, and they can't really do game original stuff unless they get the rights.

Yeah that “first look” thing was awful. What were they even thinking releasing that? “OHHH this’ll get people hyped! Henry in a leftover Legolas wig that we stuck on with some duct tape, drinking a 5-hour energy bottle! F*** YEAH!”

That didn't bother me so much as the ugly gambeson.

I think Kate Beckinsale circa 2004 would have been a perfect Yennifer.

A younger Rhona Mitra too.

My frontrunner was the girl who played the girl taking care of the boys in Jurassic World, she played Morgan La Fey in a show and looked/sounded the part.

Katie McGrath?

So as someone unfamiliar with the books/games...is this Yennifer character meant to be shady?

I am surprised how much the look is actually influenced by the game considering early reports were they were trying to stay away from the games and closer to the books, but this is no bad thing in my book, people love the games on the whole so why not use some of that popularity, if it isnt broke sort of thing. I can understand the issue of irking the book writer though as he seems to pretty much hate the games even though it made him pretty rich and more famous than his books alone would have.

Keira Knightley or Katie McGrath would have been my choices. I could already see the being annoyed with Geralt. :hehe:

I wouldn't say Yennefer is really "shady" past her introduction to Geralt. She plays some stuff close to the chest, but that is the nature of her position. She can be icy, especially to Geralt, but also treats those she cares about with a lot of love. She is not to be crossed, and can be rather blunt, in a good way imo.

Her relationship with Geralt is interesting, because from the outside it seems like she treats him like garbage, but the particulars of there relationship become clear the more they interact.

That would really bother me. A lot. It would be like removing lightsabers from the Jedi. It is a big part of the Witcher's code, and using only a silver sword is very impractical.

My favorite as well. :highfive:

I also really like the The Grandmaster School of the Bear armor, for any occasion where Geralt might need a bit more armor or is in very cold conditions.

I love the look of Witcher 3, so the more it looks like it, the better. The silver sword has a bit of the earlier game design to it as well imo. I am just surprised. If I am honest, I feel like if they could, they'd just go with the look of the games as much as they could. They figured out how to make the world come to life, in a way that actually looked semi-practical for television/film. But I also think that would result in the author losing his ****. That CDPR isn't involved in this in all just feels... well wrong.
