Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

The sooner they will stop trying to turn Anya into the game Yennefer, the better.

They're different and should be approached differently. Anya has her own visual strengths.
Agreed. This looks horrible.

She has rather expressive features - big eyes, pronounced nose and lips, sharp jawline. Contrast make-up would be a mistake.

But one of the writers was gushing about her on twitter, so we need to wait some more to see it.

They should just use her strengths rather than try and shoehorn her look into game Yennefer.

she has really strong features, i feel that minimal/soft makeup should be the way to go.. thats how i feel, since all those edits that try to vamp her up, just make her look like a drag race contestant.

I also feel her face needs to be opened, not concealed by hair. So maybe something combed/slicked back. It maight give her a bossy look. Braids is probably not a good idea, since they always give "girlish" vibe.

Or if it's something along the lines of what people expect akin to the game or the books, it shouldn't cover half of her face.

I think hair over the eye can work for what you guys seem to want if the hair isn't too long or thick or fancy. In that manip, her hair looks so big that it makes her seem smaller, which doesn't help her not to look young. More mid-length hair, a little wild/unkempt, could make her seem divorced from social conventions and unpredictable and help sell the idea that she isn't what she appears to be (a young woman).

You know Fincher, your avatar makes me think, I feel like Manu Bennett should be in this show at some point as well.

The manips have been so good so far so I look forward to when someone on the internet comes up with a really good one for her.

Manu's great. I don't know enough of The Witcher to know what role would be a good fit for him, though.

I wonder if they scheduled shooting for late Autumn because they want specific (bad) weather.

Yeah not surprised. Reports stated that filming starts in November and goes through May.

So this is probably just actors going overseas to start their training and doing rehearsals right before filming. So they are doing their several weeks of rehearsals/training, costume fittings, etc.

I dont think I've seen an adaption with casting this bad in a long time. And by bad I mean wrong for the character and source material and not bad due to talent. Most adaptations have at least one bad bit of casting. But so far the casting for this show is bad from top to bottom.

The show of course has the chance to make me like it once I actually watch it. And I'll admit they did well once I watch it if it turns out well. But as of now I haven't liked a single casting and I'm not that hard to please. For the most part I'm open minded about adaptions and dont think 1 to 1 accuracy is need or even good for adaptions. But with this show it's like they had an entirely different source material and not the actual published books and games that I've read and played.

We'll see what happens.

I wouldn't say it's bad from top to bottom. Some of the casting choices definitely confuse me and are less inspiring.

Just for example, MyAnna Buring is a fantastic choice as Tissaia.

I'm generally fine with Cavill as Geralt, but he needs solid direction and writing without question. I always generally found the ideas of Mads Mikkelsen or Waldeau as Geralt absolutely ridiculous. Cavill seems like a more realistic choice.

I never felt like Eva Green had to be cast as Yennefer, but I'm not inspired at all by Anya Chalotra. I mean she's a complete unknown so pretty much a blank slate. So maybe she has that going for her. But when I see her, I don't see Yennefer; even a younger Yennefer.

Mimi Ndiweni as Fringilla, a Nilfgaardian sorceress who has relation to Toussaint nobility, makes no sense to me unless they are completely altering her background.

The Witcher is set in a world where there are countries that are proxies of Africa and the Middle-East such as Zerrikania and Ofir. So I mean, it's not like you couldn't incorporate original or characters from those nations into the cast.
