Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

After that final season of GoT I don’t think it will be quite as much of a problem.

Ha fair, unless it loses all sense of logic from the first episode then its on firmer ground on that front at least compared to the last season but overall GoT is still going to go down as a big thing in tv and mostly loved all be it for the ending that was fumbled.

I dont need this to be the next big thing though just a good adaptation of the source material is what I am looking for.

I think the new pics have certainly lifted hopes a bit after that rocky "first look", most things I have seen people say have been positive but this is purely about the look of the thing.

Cavill will always split opinion it seems though, coming off of the DC roller coaster probably doesnt help his cause.

As for re-sheathing the sword, Geralt is not a normal human. He's a mutant who has enhanced skills and genetics. His senses are highly enhanced. He's stronger and faster than a normal man. He is likely a better sword fighter than most other soldiers on the planet. Sheathing a sword is probably not even a thing for him if it's on his back.

I haven't read all the posts but I thought everyone loved those recent pics of Cavill as Geralt? The original reveal had the opposite reaction (again just from what I saw).

Yeah like Geralt can get drunk, but my guess is it takes him a lot to get drunk, like a really high alcohol level because his system was genetically altered to resist high levels of toxicity. So he could probably do many things humans cannot or cannot do easily with his eyes closed.

What worries me is the hype some people are giving this as the next "Game of Thrones", no way can it live up that level of popularity. I understand the inevitable comparative as they are set in similar sort of fantasy worlds and therefore demands comparison but its not really very similar in terms of story and character I can see a lot being turned off by it just because its not the same to GoT in terms of episodes being shocking and with immense cliffhangers.

Manage expectations and all that. But you never know, it could be better.

I'm not sure anything will ever come close to Game of Thrones in terms of overall popularity and cultural impact, but I am also hoping for The Witcher to surpass it especially because I don't really like it all that much and because of Season 8.

Also, at least The Witcher has an ending in the books. The story is for all intents and purposes complete.

Even Goblin Slayer is something I hold above Game of Thrones in terms of dark fantasy.

Yeah, I think the reception to the recent pics has been largely positive, as evidenced by the number of us who have Geralt avatars, lol. I think that “first look” clip left a bad taste in a lot of our mouths but these pics have reinvigorated a lot of us.

Yeah I was a GoT diehard but the writing really went south in the last couple seasons. And the finale was so absolutely awful it kind of ruined the whole show for me. I don’t know that I’ll even go back at any point and watch my favorite episodes.

In defense of those of us who had VALID criticisms for the first video, it did not look good. The wig looked off. The costume looked bad. IMHO they should never have released it. It was a costume and makeup test anyway, it wasn't really made for the public.

Am i the only one that didn't thing a song of ice and fire were that great books? I preferred feists mistress of the empire for intrigue and political manueverings. David gemmell was a god for creating a badass. Abercrombe for grit and tragic anti heroes.

The first couple i loved, but they did get boring. I only wanted to see what arya got up to.

Yeah, for me it wipes out the memory of that initial reveal although the judgement of everyone involved in allowing it to be released is still a worry. He looks absolutely great as Geralt though now. That is a huge deal and something that could easily not quite have gone right.

I understand what you mean. At the end of the day though, it will be a good series or not depending on the story and how it's played out. The look (although important) are secondary.

Yeah that will make up most minds once we see things like what quality of effects they have, the scale and backdrop to the whole show, start to hear some of the script and how well the cast are delivering and portraying their characters, until then nobody can really say this is going to be good or bad or indifferent, all guess work really at the moment.

At least these recent pics raise some hopes for some.
