Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I like Zach McGowan a lot, but aside from Black Sails, he’s kind of a D-lister. I know Cavill isn’t really that big a name either but he has more name recognition and since the rest of the cast are total unknowns, they likely wanted someone a little recognizable as their lead.

They could've filled out the rest of the cast with bigger names to offset that...I mean I get why get Cavill but I feel that because of the games they didn't really need him.

The fact that the showrunner only thought of Cavill in the role is frustrating when there were much better fits for Geralt out there *coughZachMcGowancough*
Mads is the only correct answer. :atp:

Also didn't the show runner reject Cavill and then come back to him?

I've seen it described as Cavill met with the show runner and said he wanted the part and I've seen it described as a audition and was passed on then cast after 200+ auditions. I'm guessing that it's a case of Cavill requested a audition and was passed in which case both statements are correct just worded differently.I

Well I can see I was a little slow with my post. I guess that's what happens when your watching tv and writing a post when something loses your attention.

I've never seen it described this way anywhere.

I just don't know why people see Mads Mikkelsen as Geralt. Plus, he's still 53. Also, while I like Mads, I don't see him as a good fit for this part. I can see him as Vesemir or an older Emhyr, but not Geralt.

Geralt is old but his Witcher genes slow his aging. Ideally you need an actor his 30s who can play this role well into his 40s realistically.

Yeah I like Mads a lot but if Geralt is supposed to age slowly then he’s probably too old.

maybe so but casting Henry created a buzz yes to us the property is great but not to the general public the games are popular yes but again the target audience for this is not exactly gamers

much like how GOT casted Sean Bean for Ned in GOT it created instant buzz for that show

[I'm not comparing Bean to Cavill acting wise so spare me the lectures]

I'm not sure which way you haven't seen it described but even the IMDB trivia page says they tested 207 actors for the role and you described his first meeting better than I did. Which leaves the audition part and I don't remember where I heard or read that. I'm guessing it was either in a Instagram post or one of the many videos I've watched. It very well could be me just blending meeting and audition or getting stories about other actors in the show mixed up.

Mads general dry wit, where he can bounce between deadpan and and hitting that well time smirked. Second, he has that rather exotic Slavic look imo. Casting a little older to get the right actor seems more then fine to me.

Once again, I like Mads, but those qualities aren't exclusive to him.

Also, doesn't sound like they turned him down at all. It sounds like he campaigned for the role before they even started casting or even the writing process.

Now I'm sure the truth could be quite different. Maybe Netflix told her to cast Cavill because he was interested and wanted to do it. And Hissrich went along with it because it guaranteed their show getting made and possibly even getting a second season pickup or whatever. I have no idea if that's true but it wouldn't surprise me. But it also never sounds like they rejected or passed on him either.

That's fine. But Mads is fantastic and I'd love to see him as Geralt. Even now.

I took part in the SDCC roundtables with the cast and crew. Please give them a look.

Cavill was not my first choice, but I don't think he's the worst choice either. A lot of people were suggesting Mads Mikkelsen or Nikolaj Coster Waldau, none of which work or made any sense.

Cavill clearly wanted out of Superman and at least he's passionate about this character.

mads or nikolaj dont work or make sense? what lol
and didn't Cavill recently say he wanted to make MoS2

This is not set in stone yet, it could change, but it seems we're looking at a Fall release date.

I mean, if Zach McGowan is a D-lister, that makes Anya Chalotra and Anna Schaffer F-listers, and they were cast in major roles on the show.

Fake news. It came rom an unverified source on Twitter. The dude calls himself "Executive Production" on his Netflix profile.
