Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

Terrifying.

I thought it was the trailer looked great! Loved Cavill’s look and his dialogues so far. The sword fighting scenes look great and Cavill looks like a total bad ass doing them. He has serious screen presence and looks like he will perform quite well

I didn’t get a sense it looked cheap. I thought the production design and scale were quite good but let’s see come December!

are we comparing 5 game of thrones trailers to 1 witcher trailer now?

y'all need to relax and wait for the show to release lol

I mean honestly some trailers have given me some huge alarm bells. I didn't really get that here. My biggest concern at the start of all this was really Anya Chalotra's casting. They cast a complete unknown and someone I thought was ill-suited to play such a strong female character. But seeing her in costume and the scene at Comic-Con, I'm feeling a lot better about it.

Also like that shot of Jaskier walking alongside Geralt with his lute. I hope we have some great male bonding scenes between the two.

They have released two crappy trailers for this dumpster fire, thank you very much. :argh:

Everyone comparing it to got lol. No wonder you're a bit disappointed, got was the greatest sword and sorcery tv series ever (by a long way). Most series have been of the level of legend of the seeker and xena, compare it to them and this looks amazing.

Manage your expectations and you might love this show. Set them too high and even if it is very good you will be sad.

I'm disappointed because it looks cheap, uninspired, bland, and forgettable. Even comparing it to something like Legend of the Seeker or Xena doesnt change that. Those shows were made in different decades, when standards were much lower, and those shows were made for much less money. Witcher exists post GOT. It's a netflix show. And its budget is the same budget of GOT seasons 5,6, & 7. So I expect more from Netflix's Witcher. I expect it too look like an $80 million production.

It could be that it's just a terrible trailer composed of mostly terrible elements from the show, but that seems very unlikely.

See I feel like there is a bit of a conversation that is at cross purposes. I don't think many are talking about big battles and CGI. I am talking about how the show looks as a whole. The cinematography feels small. The color grading makes it feel cheaper imo. The set design and costume work isn't the best, but beyond that to me it doesn't particularly look well shot. They aren't using what they have to utmost potential. GoT season 1 basically did that. Whether it was a conversation inside a hall or fight in the middle of Kings Landing.

Now the show could come out and make me feel completely differently, and I'd be happy about that. I want this to work, so bad. Mr. Hexer is one of my favorite stories after all. But when they give you a trailer, it is really all you have to go off, and I never felt like the early GoT trailers or the new Mando trailers made the shows feel small or cheap. Especially not for television.
Agreed.

At least they kept Yen's violet eyes. Still irritates me that D&D chose to change Dany's eyecolor in GOT.

She also should have had her hair singed off after she walked into the fire at the end of season one, but I guess they were afraid that a bald, naked Dany wouldn’t look as sexy.

Not even the animated low Budget series Bojack Horseman received 7 Seasons. No way this Show will be alive after 3 Seasons.

agree with this. I really don’t think this will go beyond 3-4 seasons not just because of Netflix’s cheapness at times but Netflix is probably going to get pretty badly hit in the upcoming streaming service wars. I suspect they will lose a lot of subscribers

To be alive for 7 seasons it needs to be a smash success. It's not some office drama they can get behind with low budget, it needs to be truly successful to last that long. Budget of 7 seasons will be pushing 1 bil. in production costs.

But I'm glad they're thinking that far already. Maybe there's a chance. If it's good, it will keep a watcher fan in me busy till CDPR will decide to continue their Witcher saga.

This is a possibility. What if it lasts for a fourth season?

How many episodes per season for this show?

It would have to be a Stranger Things level success, and Disney will have to decide what they want to do with Netflix when they buy it in like 4 years.

Are we sure there wasn't an issue with the contacts with GoT? Harry Potter was originally suppose to have his green eyes, until they found out he was allergic to the contacts.

Looks way better and far more interesting than I thought it would when originally announced, may not turn out to be the best thing ever but at least looks worth checking out as a big fan of the source material. All the Witcher elements seem to be present and liking some of the shots and sword fights already. Nilf armor still looks a bit "eh" but thats minor.

Yeah let's see if this actually gets past 2 or 3.

House of Cards got 6 though.

Its hard to compare it to any early Netflix show, because that was before they decided 2-3 seasons worth of content was "enough". That that is where shows "peak" and wouldn't be attracting new viewers.
