Fantasy Netflix's The Witcher - General Discussion Thread

I haven’t read the books or played the games, but this seems awesome to me. Liking what I’m seeing. Very much looking forward to something like this after the disgrace that was the final season of GOT.

Yennefer at her cutest yet.

I can handle cosmetic issues as long as the performances are solid. My big concern is longevity based on the network. If this thing is good, I want it to go awhile.

Seeing the featurette on Yen made me neutral on the casting choice for her. Better than at first.

Fringilla and Triss are still awfully casted.

Yeah, those two casting choices that we haven't even seen a combined total of two seconds of footage of are just awful :o

Uh, they are miscast. Doesnt take more than a second to see that.

This is kinda how the books describe them:

That's not how they look in the show. AT ALL.

Doesn't matter their performance, I don't like the casting.

I'm well aware of their book descriptions (though using a picture of game Triss isn't really accurate, the only thing game Triss and book Triss have in common is being white), I just don't value them to such a degree that I refuse to even give the actresses a chance to prove themselves.

This is true. But then again, everything about game Triss is better then book Triss, so I am partial to acting like she is the one and only Triss. I mean game Triss made me reconsider everlasting devotion to Yen. That's impressive.

or maybe expectations are ridiculously high. expecting a better game of thrones vikings black sails lotr... we really havent seen enough to be so judgmental. im just saying lets watch 1 episode first. im not entirely happy with everything but netflix already wants a 2nd season. im not sure if that means it awesome or not but it means something must be special. 11 days. if you arent here to suffer or celebrate with me... ill be very angry with you.
I don't need it to be better then any of those, but I do think it needs to be good imo. And what they have shown us so far has been all over the place in terms of quality imo. If it works better in context, great. I love the Witcher after all. Also if a company is going to put out a medieval fantasy show at this point, it is going to be compared to what has come.

Also I wouldn't put too much into early season 2 orders. I mean, they did the same for Vinyl and Carnival Row. Vinyl didn't actually end up with a second season and Amazon is regretting that second season order of Carnival Row.

I was actually trying to figure out how to break it to you that I can't be there with you, because some genius decided they needed to release this on the same day as Star Wars. And I have two showings booked already, and I don't even know when I am going to be able to start this.

Yennefer is pretty much perfect, for me. And that fight with kikimora looks spectacular. Cintra burning too. Cant wait!

Seeing that they are apparently doing a full origin story for Yen and showing her as an abused farm girl I can understand the casting choice.

Also watching that featurette, and seeing how incredibly striking Yen's purple eyes are makes me hate D&D even more for not giving Dany Targaryen purple eyes like she had in Martin's books. Its always irked me, but seeing it done so well with Yennefer is just poking that old wound.

This kind of expectations comes mostly from people familiar with the games and the books. It's hard to blame them. Games are stellar, especially 3. After couple of hundred hours you get so attached to the world and it's characters, you feel horrible emptiness when the adventure ends. I doubt I can name more than 5 games that did this to me in my 25-year gaming "career".

indeed on my second playthrough I bought the DLC [first time ever for me] I appreciated the world that much more and did all possible side quests and went and bought the witcher 2 from the xbox store while going from the 3rd game to the second is not ideal the 3rd game is perfect game I got to get more into the Triss relationship glad I did it

Why is Amazon regretting a season 2 of Carnival Row? Have the ratings been bad? I personally loved season 1.

‘Carnival Row’: Erik Oleson Replaces Marc Guggenheim As Showrunner, Travis Beacham Departs Amazon Drama – Deadline

As someone who was really excited for the first season, I didn't end up finishing it. Couldn't put my loved ones through that. :funny:

I am hoping this change works for me. Especially considering we are talking about the showrunner of Daredevil season 3.

I adore the Witcher 2, but it does fell lesser after the third game. But it really is worth it for the story. Pretty great imo.

The DLC is so good. Honestly, my favorite Witcher story might be Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine feels like the perfect bow on the series.

The Witcher 3 achieved a new standard for games for me so everything would feel a bit lesser after that. The Witcher 2 is still great though, as you say, and tells a compelling story that dares to be a bit more complex than most video game stories. It also has a candidate for my favorite character outside of Geralt's closest circle.

The W3 DLC's are indeed great. Each one easily brings enough to match tons of other complete games, and they bring new stories that fit very well with the overall game while still feeling very different from the main story and quests.

The casting of Fringilla is gonna change the story in later seasons, unless they totally deviate from it, for no good reason. Fringilla is explicitly said to remind Geralt of Yen and it had him even considering abandoning his journey and living peacefully in Toussaint (why Blood and Wine is beautifully ended) with her. Fringilla is also related to the Emperor, who clearly doesnt look like her, and Anna Henrietta who also doesnt look like the actress cast. It just seems dumb as hell to rework all of that.

Game Triss IS also much better than book Triss and it was hard not picking her as my 100% run through love interest in Witcher 3.

Huh. Well, sorry you didn't like it. Anyway, the showrunner for D3 is great, though it's never a good sign when the person who created a show leaves.

The books describe Fringilla as a big titted cosplayer and Triss as looking exactly like in the the game series?
Odd.

Fringilla Vigo is described as ghastly and deathly pale. Shes Nilfgardian, Anna Henrietta's cousin (who is Emhyr's and Ciri's cousin). From a world building perspective it makes no sense for Fringilla to be black.

I honestly have no horse in this race, it just irritates me endlessly whenever someone brings up cosplayers as what a character should look like in a movie or a tv show.
