Ok, is it just me or does is Marvel clueless about what to do with Blade? Has anyone read issue #1 of the new series by writer Marc Guggenheim? What is this mess! He not only insults Blade fans (just read his "notes" page at the end) but shows a total lack of knowledge about what/who Blade is. How could Marvel pull this story out of the garbage? Blade is defined by his movie/TV success and that is how 99% of the public knows him. Ignoring his only true success is folly! Marvel has once again failed to cash in on a viable franchise... They have doomed yet another attempt and re launching Blade.

Shame on you Marvel!

I really enjoyed it actually.

I thought it was reasonably faithful to the movie version but took steps to place it squarely in the marvel universe (something I thought was pretty brave actually).

It was certainly closer to the movie version of blade than the comic version.

Dare I say next time you crique something highlight specific examples ie you say he has no knowledge of who/what blade is my question is in what respect? from the original comic (basically a human who is immune to a vampire bite) or the film where he is the daywalker?

It was awful. It was using the movie version of Blade (half-vampire) instead of the comic version. What the f**k? If I want to see the movie version of Blade, I'll watch the movies...And the storytelling was all over the place. Seriously, I read it twice, and I still have no idea what the f**k was going on, other than apparently all of SHIELD's Howling Commando unit is now evil vampires who Blade killed?

Are you kidding me! The first issue was a jumble mess! From the "lets put Spiderman on the cover even though he ha snothing to do with the story" to Frost/Blades Mom set in the 1800s. What was that! it even goes against the new TV show continuity!

Maybe the whole this was/is a bad dream! What a mistake!!! Horrible writing!!!!

I liked the way they used spidey actually.

Basically he was there (IMO) to show that it was set in the marvel universe proper.

To be honest movie version blade is far more interesting IMO than the comic version. Given that he's supported 3 successful movies and a TV series I don't think marvel can really be faulted for following that approach.

No it was a helicarrier full of vampires but not the whole howling commando unit. For instance one of the members of the HC was talking to blade outside the school and was visible in the mirror and the agents who took spidey in the bed were not in armour thus where not vampires since it was sunny.

I'm just glad I didn't pay for it. I downloaded to read to see if I would want to add it to my weekly pull list. It was very bad and just all over the place. I didn't realize I had to pick up Howling Commandos to follow this arc. Needless to say it is not going into my pull list. I'll be surprised if it makes 10 issues.

They changed blade years ago, after the spider-man animated cartoon, i believe. He's been a dhampir of sorts for years. This comic doesn't make any actual changes now does it?

Spidey was used! What was he doing there? What was the point other then misleading people into thinking it was a Blade vs Spiderman story.

I give it 4 issues... It will over night turn into a "limited series". That is the Marvel way for dog titles.

I've already given my opinion on that.

Read my posts if you're going to ask me questions.

Yeah I was lookin forward to this issue but I was lost. Thing is, Blade could be a very financial succesful character for Marvel but due to this horrible comic, it won't do well. They should get a good writer and launch it right. However due to horrible writing, it will be canned and Joey Q. will blame it on lack of interest for the character, which it should be on the writer. There's no way a comic book character can have 3 movies and a current high rating tv show and not have a comic. Thanks a lot Joey Q!

I thought it sucked also, I think the best thing Marvel can do with Blade is keep him out of regular continuity and place him in a MAX series with a writer like Mike Carrey or just let Mark Millar have him, since MM has been chomping at the bit to write him.

Oh, and Howard Chaykin totally sucks donkey balls! How is this guy considered a comics legend? His art is seriously dated.

I'd buy a Mark Millar MAX Blade title. I loved the films and downloaded every episode of the Blade series. I also liked Blade in the animated series, so yes, I'm one of those people that Marvel have missed out on. I'm a huge Spider-Man fan, love the cover, but didn't buy this. Looked too ****. *sigh*

I think they should keep the movie Blade concept and let Blade remain in the Marvel universe. He should also fight something besides vampires. There's only so far you can go with that storyline. He should hunt supernatural creatures. I'm lookin forward to the next issue when he faces Doom, even though the cover could be a complete fraud like the first one. The moral of the story is: they need a better writer. :o

I think Blade is a lost cause.

Marvel should just shelve him until another 'Goyer' type a guy with a vision for Blade comes around. The premise is so simple and inately cool! Yet for whatever reason Marvel doesn't get it.

Maybe it's the reconcilation of the 'Movie Blade' vs the 'Comicbook Blade' that Marvel is having a hard time on? He's more known and successful in one medium and not the other, so I think following the movie is a no-brainer. Keep it out of continuity let Blade be the start of a 'Vertigo-type' line for Marvel.

Or maybe it's because Blade is a black character and Marvel have no writers who understand the 'Swagger/mentality' of a character like Blade especially Wesley Snipes popular take on the character. (Trust me when I tell you David Goyer had nothing to do with the intrinsic 'Cool' of Blade.)

Although,I suspect Brian Bendis (God I hate him so..) would do well with Blade.

Though I enjoyed the issue and thought the writing of the character was closer to the intrinsic cool the snipes brought to the role (the bit when talking about spider-man and the bit were he blows holes in the helicarrier worked well for me) (something i recall being mentioned actually by the direcetor of the second film who basically said that snipes "brought the bladeness" to the character) I do agree with the sentiments that marvel has precious few writers that can write a black lead in that style without it coming off as crass.

Bendis would be a good shout for the dialogue but would he work for the action element?

That's who should write Blade! Bendis is a jackass and all and even though dude aint black, he tends to write them well.
Hey Demaar, how you feel about the prophecy of Black Goliath dying coming to pass? Got any comments sir?

reason why the comic sucked, becasue its set in the mainstream marvel universe, and two its a Blade comic book. The Blade character is vaslty more interesting in the movies, and on his own live action show. You see the reason why Blade is interesting in the movies, is that the movies are set in a quasi realistic world. The comic book blade is set in the marvel universe, and once you start bringing in spider-man and all the other colorful superheros and villians, it becomes simply upsurd.

Yea,it's too bad Mark never got to do his Blade and Ghost Rider stories.

They should give Blade to either Bendis or Ennis. We already know Ennis can write a hell of a vampire story. And Bendis' use of blade in USM has been great both times.

Boy do I!!

It basically comes down to two things for me..

1. C-lister who's basically a 'darker skinned' version of a already established hero (Hank Pym) No loss there to Marvel. Plus few outside of hardcore fans know of Goliath.

2. Black/Latino (Especially males. Asian,Black,Latina etc..superchicks are hot and the white male fantasy is to have them all for themselves, thus less exspendable.) characters are in the end exspendable since a good chunk of the readership is 'Joe Q Smith' from Idaho. Which makes Black super guy less relatable therefore killable.

It bothers me a little bit, but not so much that I'm gonna yell "Holy Racist Plot! Batman!"

Hell truth be told Latino males of a certain 'Urban' slant, get the raw deal more.

I agree with that.
