New Blade Comic: Stinks!

Boy do I!!

It basically comes down to two things for me..

1. C-lister who's basically a 'darker skinned' version of a already established hero (Hank Pym) No loss there to Marvel. Plus few outside of hardcore fans know of Goliath.

2. Black/Latino (Especially males. Asian,Black,Latina etc..superchicks are hot and the white male fantasy is to have them all for themselves, thus less exspendable.) characters are in the end exspendable since a good chunk of the readership is 'Joe Q Smith' from Idaho. Which makes Black super guy less relatable therefore killable.

It bothers me a little bit, but not so much that I'm gonna yell "Holy Racist Plot! Batman!"

Hell truth be told Latino males of a certain 'Urban' slant, get the raw deal more.

I was hoping Goliath would have gotten a boost in the MU. I always saw him as being a good straight man for all the crazyness in Marvel. Of course, it seems Mark Millar simply enjoys killing him, seeing as how he had Ultimate Bill Foster killed quite brutally in the Ultimates.

I think Blade is a lost cause.

Marvel should just shelve him until another 'Goyer' type a guy with a vision for Blade comes around. The premise is so simple and inately cool! Yet for whatever reason Marvel doesn't get it.

Maybe it's the reconcilation of the 'Movie Blade' vs the 'Comicbook Blade' that Marvel is having a hard time on? He's more known and successful in one medium and not the other, so I think following the movie is a no-brainer. Keep it out of continuity let Blade be the start of a 'Vertigo-type' line for Marvel.

MAX is Marvel's Virtigo line. Kind of sucks, though. Needs some good writers to come along and do great things with Marvel's darker characters. A Blade MAX series would be sweet, and I would like it to be in continuity. His powers have already evolved to that of a dhampir, so they wouldn;t have to change much.

Or maybe it's because Blade is a black character and Marvel have no writers who understand the 'Swagger/mentality' of a character like Blade especially Wesley Snipes popular take on the character. (Trust me when I tell you David Goyer had nothing to do with the intrinsic 'Cool' of Blade.)

Although,I suspect Brian Bendis (God I hate him so..) would do well with Blade.

I prefer the Ennis idea. If there's anything Ennis is good at, it's over the top violence and vampires.

Too true on all counts Q.

Now that I've had time to think about it Ennis would write a badass Blade.

My problem with Vertigo these days is that it no longer feels like it is within the DCU. MAX would be perfect for characters such as Blade, the Punisher, Ghost Rider, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Elektra, Wolverine, Shang-Chi, Howard the Duck, Black Widow, Deathlok, and Daredevil. The line needs more ongoings though, enough with the minis.

Yeah. The only DCU Virtigo titles I can think of are Lucifer and Hellblazer, and DC has cut enough of their ties to the DCU to make you think others.

Crazy thing is I think all the characters listed above, in a ongoing by top writers would slaughter DC's Vertigo line.

Well, currently, maybe. But in all of Virtigo's history, probably not. Sandman still tops all of them. And they're all too much of the "bad boys" to fill much more than the action adventure with depth mold. That's not a bad thing, but it doesn't match some of Virtigo's greats. Now, my Loki idea, that might go somewhere. :o

I would think so to. With characters like those, the MAX line could really feel like a legitmate part of the Marvel Universe but with more mature themes. DC's Vertigo is sorely lacking that feeling.

Wolverine really needs to go to the MAX line.

Is anybody really surprised at this? Despite the potential Blade has as a character, Marvel has continually flubbed him up.

My opinion? Reform the Midnight Sons. Put it in a MAX book. Maybe then Blade won't suck so much.

Of course it would. Especially if you make them like Paranormal Investigators or something.

This would be good. Marvel could bring back Hannibal King and Drake to restart the nightstalkers.

I know no one will probably agree, but why not just forget blade in 616 since no writer can seemingly do him right anymore, and just launch him as an ultimate. He'd fit right in, pissy attitude, blood, copy him straight from the movies attitude and all. Ultimate has good enough artists on it to do a decent wesley snipes looking setup, and that way they can just relaunch him without worrying about screwing continuity. Blade from the comics is diff from the movie version, and it's an odd change if I'm reading you guys right, just to fit him in the movie mold. Him in the Ultimates would be a fresh start and they could make him the way they want from the start.

Your right, noone is going to agree with you. :o He should be apart of the MU. All he needs is a decent writer and his movie concept and he'd be fine. Just forget his comic history and take over his movie identity cuase its well known by comic fans as well as non comic fans. And definetly needs more variety! That vampire villian only is getting old!

You don't NEED the movie concept. At least I don't think so. I think what he needs is a good writer who can understand how to write what he is and what he does.

Hannibal King and Francis Drake would make great allies for him, maybe even Werewolf by Night or something too, I dunno. Hell, you could even put a Ghost Rider on there. Dan Ketch, maybe.

I just don't know if Blade is working as a solo character. They keep trying and it just doesn't work.

So what exactly is wrong with this comic. Im hearing two things.

1. It was too much like the movie Blade

2. It wasnt enough like the movie Blade.

If anyone deserves a new title its Hannibal King. The movie had a good idea but focused on the wrong parts. i liked the movie design (the beard, the clothes) and the attitude (except tone down the cheesy one-liners) but in a comic it should change between that and his trench coat look. Part detective work/ part action, with a wider array of villains than vampires.

I think that it is pure lazyness... I het the feeling that Joe Q. could not care about Blade but the suits tell him otherwise. If he put a little thought into the property it could work. If Punisher and Bullseye can why not Blade!

Why don't they ask him? I think that he probable would jump at the chance.

Simple. It's a book about Blade. That's ALL you ever need to know what could possibly be wrong with it.
