New Cleopatra to Rule Theaters
Source: Variety
December 1, 2006

Columbia Pictures has acquired screen rights to Cleopatra, a new take on the life of the Egyptian queen that will be written by Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Stacy Schiff. Scott Rudin will produce the adaptation, says Variety.

Schiff has made a seven-figure publishing deal for Cleopatra with Little Brown and will complete the book in 2009.

The 1963 version, starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, was one of the most expensive films ever.

The book will present Cleopatra as a firm ruler and military tactician who embarked on a ruthless rise to power. Cleopatra twice married brothers, killing each of them as well as a sister. Romantic alliances with the much-older Roman honchos Julius Caesar and Marc Antony helped her solidify power, but her dalliance with Antony undid both of them.

Any ideas for directors or actors/actresses?

I read an interview about two years back that said a Cleopatra project was on the cards for Jessica Alba.

This sounds like it could ctually be decent.

I hope not. Any interest I would have in this movie would be dashed instantly.

i hope the play that cleopatra song during the trialer

I would think someone of a mixed ancestry or slight mediterranean look would be appropriate. Not a pure black actress, nor a pure white actress would be accurate.

i say if this chick can act (we'll see when Smokin' Aces comes out), then i think she'd be perfect...

for those that don't recognize her, she's Alicia Keys.

So now they've remade all the successful movies, they're remaking the most notorious ones?

^Though to be honest, I don't conisder Liz Taylor's movie a definitive version, more like a Hollywood lovefest dedicated to hedonism.

So...a remake that is destined to bomb? Gotta love that hollywood logic.

Cleopatra isn't the most expensive movie of all-time. It cost 44 million back in 63 to make. It's only so damn expensive when you count inflation...which would mean King Kong remake and big budget movies will be even more expensive years to come.

Where are people getting "remake" from?

The article clearly states its being written from scratch, by a Pulitzer winner no less.
I'll take any new movie from the period, personally I dont think there have been nearly enough.

This would be an interesting one to cast:

Emmanuelle Chriqui as Cleo
Jude Law as Mark Antony
Sir Ben Kingsley as Julius Ceasar

people that think just because a movie is based on something that a movie already was based on, it's automatically a remake...

...take for instance the thread in the misc films entitled "another Passion wannabe!"

she looks the part, all 3 do, but i don't know if she has the acting chops to pull it off, from a few movies i've seen of hers. i'm trying to forget in the mix :csad:.

Okay, I admit that first choice was a bit biased, because she's Canadian and I'm a little mad for her, and I believe that she's gotten such lousy movies because there's not a lot of work for a racially mixed actress.

But at least in On the Line she helped us believe Lance Bass was into girls for 90 minutes. If that's not great acting I don't know what is. :)

if there were ever a perfect actress to play Cleopatra, it would certainly be her...

Last i heard Jessica Alba was gonna be in it and if her huge slate of films are hits she will probably be cast

But in those years to come Cleopatra would be subject to that extra inflation as well, and would still be more expensive.
