New Devil May Cry 4 Hands on

just played the demo, looks awesome. i knew it was on easy as soon as i played it lol

from what ive seen from Nero in the demo, he's a really cool character, his sword is awesome to.

when you guys get the game are you gonna go through it on easy first then normal, etc?

i think thts what i might do.

I always start new games on normal. Second time I go with the most difficult setting available.

yeah i normally go through it on normal to. with this though i might do the difficulty in order, just to get used to it.

After playing both demos it's really hard to tell any difference whatsoever between the PS3 and 360 versions.

After playing through the demo a few times, an getting better at it, and remebering that characters in DMC have a lot of animation specific branching points on the moves (like how you ca make Nero do more than his 3 hit triangle attack when tapping triangle), I'm having a lot of un.

I was less impressed with the timed portion, because the enemies just stand there more or less, but I had a so much fun in the snow area, short as it was. Apparently there are ways to get full revs out of your sword, mid move, but I haven't figured out the timing for them yet. I can just imagine Forward Dashing into a frost enemy, EXing him into oblivion before sword rev Air Raiding myself into the air, arm grabbing him into the air and then twirl grabing him.

So much fun.

Fighting the demon fire guy was great to, when I first played the game I couldn't beat him, but L1 + Grab really hlps, not to mention back dodging when he swipes with his sowrd, or and slam dunking him is so much fun. I wasn't sure if I was going to get DMC4 or not, but now I'm 100 percent on it, and I found DMC3 to be really unappealling.

Maybe im just missing something but i thought the demo was dreadfully boring. I mean from what i can tell, its just the same attack over and over and over with a grab thrown in now and then. Altho in its defense, i generally dont play those types of games.

Bah Nero is pretty awesome once you get use to using the Devil Arm for repositioning enemies.

Well there 's a lot more moves availalble to you than just that (even in the demo) but, to be critical, the game does a terrible job in letting you know that. You do know About the direction of the right stick alterin moves right? And to be fair we've only seen like a percent of all the moves there will be in the final game.

It's all in the combos! trying hitting a guy into the air, jumping up, hammering him with your sword in mid air, shooting him, then grab him and slam him into the ground.

That's a fun f#cking combo right there.

another fun thing to do...you will notice that if run continually enough eventually Nero will burst into a sprint...when he does that, press SELECT and you'll do a drop kick!

exactly...there are some many more moves that you will get throughout the game...combos become insane and the over all bad-assery of what you can do makes the game even funner!

Yea, at least to a degree. Eh i guess the game just isnt really for me, but its visuals are pretty slick.

Devil May Cry 4
Does this legendary series have what it takes for the next-gen?
by: Tristan Ogilvie 31/01/2008

The original Devil May Cry kicked arse. Released in 2001 on Sony’s PlayStation 2, it came as the flashy, fast-paced antidote to the plodding, crescent key-collecting Resident Evil series (this was pre-Resident Evil 4, mind you). It was a combo-driven hack-and-blast ‘em up that faltered in its second outing (DMC2), before restoring the balance with the excellent (though at times, dauntingly difficult) Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening.

Devil May Cry 4 marks the franchise’s debut on next-gen consoles, so you’d expect it to be a significant, sword-swinging leap over its predecessors.

And it is. Well, visually at least. The next-gen’s graphical grunt has been put to mostly good use by Capcom, with some incredible-looking boss characters and spectacular particle effects that add enough onscreen flair to make the game Employee of the Month at Chotchkies (‘sup, Office Space fans?).

Sadly, that’s where the ‘next gen’-ness ends. Perhaps unashamedly so, DMC4 remains true to the gameplay of the previous games in the series, for better or worse. Playing as newcomer Nero (and eventually Dante), you plough through waves of enemies in each level, unlocking new combo moves as you go and powering up your character with extra health and added magical power, and so on.

There is some novelty; Nero’s ‘Devil Bringer’ right arm is somewhat of a multipurpose tool. You can use it to grab enemies and slam them into the ground, or drag them towards you in a Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion fashion. You can also use it as a grappling hook to zip between platforms in certain sections, or to vault up to the heads of larger enemies so that you can slash away at their noggins in midair.

Some of the combo moves are awesome, and there are also a lot of enemy-specific attacks that add a bloody splash of diversity to each encounter. For example, if you use a grab move on one of the White Knight enemies you can turn their own sceptre upon them, and then violently jam it in and out of their guts with each frenzied tap of a button. Later on against a huge, frog-like boss with glowing, naked ladies for antennas (it’s a Japanese game, remember?), you can grab his flabby tongue, pull yourself up into his mouth and perform a rough form of root canal work with your blade and bullets.

Unfortunately, interspersed with these satisfying chunks of action are lengthy patches where you’re wandering around, retracing your steps down nondescript corridors and generally having no idea of what to do next. At several junctions throughout the game we spent upwards of ten minutes going around in circles simply because the game hadn’t made it clear which direction we were meant to be heading in. That’s not fun.

Furthermore, while the game is mostly ‘old school’ in its design, it sometimes ventures into ‘positively hokey’ territory. Cracking a giant dice (or ‘die’, to be technically correct) to move a Nero-shaped piece around a giant board game in the game’s underground lab level is just lame. Also, forcing the player down a series of four-way junctions, where each wrong path guessed sends them back to the beginning of the area, is a cheap trick for artificially lengthening games that should have died back in the 16-bit era.

Now that we think about it, there’s actually quite a lot to criticise in DMC4. The camera, a hybrid of both fixed perspectives and occasional manual control, frequently fails to focus on an enemy when you’re locked-on and attempting to attack, leaving you vulnerable to unseen counter moves.

Lastly, the cutscenes are suitably over-the-top and incredible, which obviously isn’t a criticism in itself, except for the fact that the action shown in the cinematics is far more intense and well choreographed than anything you ever experience in-game. The cutscenes just serve to reinforce exactly how amazing the gameplay isn’t (by comparison).

Snatching away one of the PlayStation’s exclusives may be a small victory for the Xbox 360 fanboys, but it’s hardly of any major consequence to the rest of us. DMC was undoubtedly a great slab of action when it first came out in 2001, but now the formula just feels a little dated and unrefined. Admittedly you can’t really find anything like it on shelves right now, but action fans should be advised to wait a few months for the destined-to-be-unbelievable Ninja Gaiden II.

THE FINAL WORD

Graphics: Plenty of pretty next-gen visuals.
Sounds: Cheesy, but authentic full-cream Jap cheese.
Control: Pull off all the wild moves with ease.
Gameplay: Dated game design throughout.

Verdict: A last-gen game in next-gen clothing. 7/10

"A last-gen game in next-gen clothing" describes most anything these days.

You get to play him eventually from what I hear, like halfway point or something. Unsure if that is true or not.

Oooh, I can almost picture Zenien getting ready to slit her throat right about now...:D

Or finding who wrote this and slitting his throat, which would make more sense.

Gamepro gave it a 9 and GameInformer gave it a 9.5. DMC4 is absolutely....

"..."terrific"

9.5

Second opinion: 9.25

+Fast, glorious, combat
+Some great level design
+Visuals and Framerate

-difficulty can get pretty extreme (though not as hard as dmc3)
-not that many innovations (says, if it ain't broke...why fix it)

The GameInformer review needs a link. Let me try and go get that...

By the way, WHO THE HELL IS GAMEPLAYER? Not trying to discredit them...but I've never heard of the magazine.

MAKES SENSE, I ALSO HEARD IT WAS HARD, I HAVE DMC 1 AND 2 AND MAY GET 3, BUT I HEARD THAT ONE IS A PAIN , BECAUSE OF THE DIFFICULTY OF IT!!!

But how could it be hard for someone with the power of the force?

I like the game, but it just seems like DMC2 with next-gen graphics. It was fairly easy

I deleted the **** out of the demo, it didn't feel nearly as exciting or awesome as DMC3 :down

DMC3 has Dante, the awesome customizable fighting styles, the hard-as-nails enemies, Virgil and that Arena mode.

DMC4 has...Dante.

I'm gonna get DMC3 for my trusty Ps2 for 15 or 20 bucks, and MAYBE get DMC4 when it's like 30 or something. Right now, judging from the DMC4 demo (and I know it's dumb to judge a game from a demo, but hey, it's what I have) it doesn't hold a candle to Ninja Gaiden or God of War.

you're right...it's just a demo...it's a demo that's better than NG Sigma's IMO.

You think if there was a demo for DMC3 that they'd give you all the customizable fighting style, another player, and Bloody Palace all in the demo?!?!?!

DMC4 is everything that DMC3 is AND MORE. Some reviewers just can't rap there heads around the fact that it's called Devil May Cry 4..it should not try to innovate too much from the source it's coming from...otherwise you get another DMC2.

DMC4 has Bloody Palace btw...it's been confirmed.
