New Joe Fridays: Week 45

I agree with the rest of you that it was a blah NJF's. No pics, and basically talking about stuff we don't really get much hints at. I rolled my eyes at there being an event for 2008-2009 already. Lord, I am getting event-fatique. They don't even need them for sales anymore. DC seems to be doing nothing right and no matter what Marvel sells or doesn't sell in a month, they beat out DC. It's like beating nothing. It's like when you play a video game so often that you can beat all the bosses on instinct. That's Marvel vs. DC now. So take it easy on the events. Let us and the retailers breathe.

That said, Slott is always cool to listen too, and considering that little good usually comes from their "counsel of elders" summets, at least him being there can limit some of the puke they put out. Nice to know that Loeb is the one person left in the Marvel Bullpen who, for the moment, doesn't have his head shoved entirely up Bendis' rectum. Yet. I mean when Bendis' BOSS pretty much sucks up to him, you knows the inmates are running the asylum.

Plus, with all respect to Loeb, his Marvel work hasn't exactly been a home run so far.

I did like this especially:

NRAMA: What corner of the Marvel Universe do you expect or would like to see get some love in the next year or so?

Slott: The supervillains. With Civil War we've seen a lot of super heroes smacking each other around. Now I really want to see some classic Marvel bad guys take center stage.

Thank you GOD. I would so love to see some actual supervillians being fleshed out, made workable, and doing their nasty stuff and having heroes rise to the challenge, instead of doing nothing but infighting and making mistakes again, and again, and again en masse.

The question is whether or not Slott has enough pull on the counsel yet.

Notice how pyched Dan Slott was! He was the only one who seemed humbled to be in that group. Ed Sounded like he knew he should of been with the A-team from the beginning.

The rest have been A-List long enough to the point of arrogance. Plus, likely a personality thing too.

Yeah, but thats simply because Wolvie and Spidey are on the team :whatever:

I find it ironic that all the "cool" superheroes are currently wanted criminals.

"Gee, kids, look at Mr. Spider-Man! He's a wanted criminal, so try to be just like him, okay? He is a superhero after all."

But in all seriousness...I feel like NA is getting bogged down by all these little backstories and conspiracies and the like. I don't want a story that takes two years to play itself out! I forget about the shadow guy in the corner in that one panel after a few months...I don't have a super-memory that let's me remember all these little tributaries that this book seems to go on.

What I'd like to see are six issue stories or so...keep them self contained, but not isolated from continuity. MAYBE have a little story that runs through the book for the year or so...but don't be at issue #30-something and say "Hey, remember that dude from waaaay back in issue #1...let's make a story about him."

So you're saying Marvel did a smart thing? :cwink:

THe sad thing is their pale versions of what they used to be. Spidey is so schizoid I don'tthink they should even call him Spider-man anymore.

I stopped reading.... it's nonsense. Their fighting NINJAS!

Actually, yeah.

At first, it was obvious that the inclusion of Wolverine and Spider-Man on the New Avengers was purely a business decision. As time went on, though, it opened up story telling possiblities that actually turned out to pretty decent. Everyone likes seeing the interactions between Logan and Peter, or Peter and Luke or even Logan and Luke. Especially now, New Avengers has never been better. So yeah, it turned out to be a smart thing. I don't mind Wolverine being an Avenger half as much I did.

At least keep Wolverine out of the X-Men, damn guy is everywhere.

In a way this reminds me of how LOST has dropped off in the ratings, due entirely to the episodes getting more and more conveluted/confusing and then being a gap in the main story. The CW stories, while good, were a good half year+ pause of Bendis' story, which does test memories. And I do agree that the conspiracy angle is running it's course, especially post CW. But in some way MIGHTY AVENGERS is run as an antidote for that, as they're fighting Mole Man, monsters, and Fembot Ultron there.

At least keep Wolverine out of the X-Men, damn guy is everywhere.

Storm very quickly is about to take his place. She's on the FF and thus on both that book and BLACK PANTHER. And it may be inevitable before she shows up in X-books again.

Good point about Mighty Avengers. I've enjoyed the first two issues and I'll keep reading. And with a WOMAN as Ultron and a Mr. Frank Cho drawing said woman...:hyper::hyper::hyper::woot:

From some of the previews, it looks like Storm is going back to at least one of the X-teams; whichever one is being drawn by Larrocca. I don't mind Storm getting a lot more exposure than she used to.

Every few years, Marvel goes back to the core of what made a character or a book successful. The last time that happened with the X-Men, was Joe Kelly and Brandon Peterson's X-Men #80 (I believe was the number). In it, Storm led a team comprised of Wolverine, Kitty, Colossus, Nightcrawler and Marrow. It had that old school, "X-Men against the world" feel that instantly grabbed new and old fans alike. My hope is that Marvel returns to it's roots concerning the X-Men, and makes them the tight knit family with a TON of history and love that they used to be, instead of the fractured bevvy of teams with their own purposes and agendas.

I have no idea why I thought it necessary to express that, but there it is. I like Storm.

Heh, she is indeed showing up in the next Uncanny arc.
