True as the sunrise, here come I with my poking at Joe Q's comments, which is utterly pointless because he never reads this. But it feels good.
Joe Q attempts to crawl out of this little firestorm over HEROES FOR HIRE #13, and basically sticks with his, "I never heard of hentai" excuse:
JQ said:
While I understand how some can see what they see and while I do acknowledge the validity of what theyre seeing based on this Hentai stuff, in no way was this our intent or the artists. I certainly wasnt aware of any small sub genre of Manga porn, but obviously there are folks much more verse in Manga than Ill ever be and I can certainly see why they would see what they see, so to them I apologize if it struck a chord that it was completely unintended to strike.

There. Internet search. Not even 2 minutes. Done by a fan. Suddenly I know something I didn't. Suddenly I know something about the biggest competition to the Big Two, which is Manga. Suddenly I am current with the expectations of the modern fan.
Under 240 seconds of effort is apparently too much for Joe here. Someone who is this ignorant about the current comic book medium honestly has no place being the EIC of biggest comic company right now. It adds to my "Joe is EIC by finding Stan Lee's golden ticket" theory.
Then he gives an apology, a rarity, but also in businesspeak.
"I didn't make a mistake, but if people think I did, I apologize for something that was not my intention". Joe, Joe, Joe, if everyone says it is Hentai, then it is Hentai. Really, be honest.
He then goes on to list a laundry list of examples that have nothing to do with the cover. All of his examples were not so obvious. THIS is obvious. Anyone who has ever seen a Hentai manga or anime cover can match it to H4H #13 perfectly. Claiming mass ignorance actually makes it seem like he doesn't know a major cliche of his biggest competitor outside of DC, and an EIC needs to have knowledge about the medium, it's rivals, and the expectations. If I stabbed someone, and said, "But I didn't know a knife would hurt them", does that negate the act of stabbing? I think not. Ignorance is not an excuse. Joe would be best to ignore this question. He keeps making the hole bigger. Let it drop, let the issue see a +4% boost in sales due to the controversay and leave it at that. Besides, it may be canceled in August. At most, Joe could say,
"Countless comics, including from the Distinguished Competition, have used sexualized images to sell books starring hot heroines. This is simply part of a trend that predates me." But that would require a competant, human brain and an open mind about what his audience expects, rather than playing the "holier than thou" elitist game of telling rather than listening, and insisting that the audience is wrong. Always.
A work of art, whether in picture or fiction, is what the audience makes it out to be.
- On another topic, the art from the new MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS looks good, and hopefully the flaws of that book have been ironed out. It needs to be relevant, somehow. All the Spidey's seems confusing, but frankly Peter David has done worse with his future stuff. I may give it a chance. MCP could give a show to see a lot of lessor known's get some tales again, like the old days, like Hellcat there.
- Good for Joe for mentioning some noteable, lengthy runs on some past books. Now, see, that was a semi-effective point. That was a knowledge of the fanbase and their expectations. Where is it more often?
- I am glad after several months, Bendis is acknowledging what was done to his own character, Night Nurse, by BKV. But will he negate it or run with it? However, that latest cover just looks wacky. Bendis relies on some wiggy stuff sometimes, so lord knows what that cover implies.
