I know people can put too much stock in having a high number. It's a status symbol for them. But I no longer care personally. 10,000, 100,000, 100, none. Whatever.

All said, I guess the admins wanted to discourage spammy behavior, or perceived spammy behavior.

For me if I see a longtimer with a high count, I know they've been here through the up and downs. The movie, show and casting dramas while surviving the ban hammer. Theyve SEEN things. A long timer with a low count tells me they couldn't be bothered to participate. It's not a status thing so much as a respect thing. That may sound dumb to others, but not to me.

I worked part time hours for many years. Most of my free time was spent here, hence my high count. I'll probably be the last to leave if this site calls it quits.

You're thinking of the Diner where there are some games. It's only recently that Community and Politics were changed.

Personally, I liked it better that way, with the post counts turned off for those two sections.

I guess for some people watching numbers go up is encouragement to post more. I imagine the reaction likes exist for the same reason. Some people chase likes. Turning post count off in off topic sections makes sense if you're trying to get people to post more in the nerdy sections.
