Action-Adventure New Matrix Movie in the Works with Drew Goddard Writing, Directing

Drew Goddard is brilliant. I think he's shown a lot of promise as a director and an upwards trajectory in the 2 films he made. I do think he could do something really cool. A new Matrix movie was probably inevitable anyway, might as well be this.

I really really liked Resurrections and think it's a really under rated movie.

But I like Goddard a lot so I am totally down for this. Cabin In The Woods and Bad Times at the El Royale were both great in my eyes. Bring this on.

Resurrections just got even more meta.
It's like it warned us that this would happen. :o

If it's good then there's another cool Matrix movie. If it's bad then they probably won't touch the franchise ever again. Either way there's nothing to be worried about. Don't see the downside at all. And I don't think Lana and Lily will be losing any sleep over it.

When these sequels get announced, I feel like Elaine from Seinfeld watching Weekend at Bernie's 2 where she is screaming "Bernie is dead you morons!" at her TV. That's me anymore with the nostalgia sequels lol.

If it features a new cast and new characters would it really be a nostalgia sequel? I feel the last one was already the nostalgia sequel, this just sounds like a new story set on the same world. Or at least I doubt they'll be bringing Keanu back.

I'll say this also.

If Goddard leans into the supernatural aspects this time, like the whole vampires and aliens thing the Oracle hinted at in Reloaded (and was touched on a little in The Matrix Online if I'm not mistaken), this movie would have my attention.

Does it matter, lol! Most of these sequels at best end up meh and at worst end up bad. Most of these IPs we keep reanimating like Frankenstein constantly just....suck anymore. There are exceptions, sure. But not even close to enough exceptions for me to blindly be excited at this point for these. Matrix has reached Terminator or Alien point where I just....don't care. Reviews are going to have to be like Blade Runner 2049 good for me to care at this point. Meh sequels just don't cut it anymore for me

Here's what probably ain't gonna be here: the really interesting stuff like the trans subtext that runs through Matrix from minute one and then becomes really explicit in Resurrections. Which is frankly the only thing left in Matrix that would be all that interesting to delve even further into.

We disagree vehemently on Resurrections but I'm kinda in this place as well to an extent. You'll get something great like Creed on very rare occasions which feels like a perfect successor to the movies it follows up on but for the most part it's just... Dull. It has also completely devalued old characters or franchises being resurrected. Sort of like how it was exciting to see Maguire and Garfield in No Way Home but that stunt will never have any impact again.

I like Drew Goddard. Have been waiting to see where he would pop up next, and wouldn't have guessed in a million years it would be this. Cool...? If there is really an idea. Matrix without the Wachowski's is viable in my opinion, if not particularly exciting at the moment. We're at a time where IP really needs to die, because these re-animated corpses are rotting and falling to pieces.

Make a game. It's my answer to most nostalgic franchises these days.

Tell that to the legal hands behind Alien and Terminator.

The last few games made for them were better than the big screen sequels.

Not so sure that is a great idea....

Even with the excuse of the pandemic and the day and date release, Resurrections opened third in its opening weekend, making a mere 10 million. Overall the studio probably lost hundreds of millions for this film. The audience was just not there. And only a couple of years after that they're developing a new one.

Needless to say I think there are some franchises that studios will never stop trying to milk. Heck, look at Hellboy. I adore the first two movies but unfortunately none of them were particularly successful box office wise. The 2019 reboot flopped majorly and yet they still filmed yet another iteration. They just don't learn.

Ha yeah that's true. Any medium at WB is compromised. They even suck for a game studio, which is its own bog of despair.

I’ve liked all The Matrix movies is some way or another despite all the flaws. I will probably watch this one too. Having said all that, it’s no surprise to hear how creatively bankrupt Hollywood still is.

Yeah, have you seen Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League? No one wants a Matrix game like that :o

I'm a diehard Matrix fan, of that entire universe. Loved the outrageous swing of Resurrections, even if not for everything worked. It was a straight up business malpractice that WB dumped it day and date alongside No Way Home. It was always going to be divisive but you can't convince me it would've bombed that bad in more ideal circumstances. There was legitimate hype when the trailer dropped, and all of that was squandered.

Anyhow, I've been curious how or if they would attempt to expand the franchise post-Resurrections. There were rumors of another Animatrix in the works, which I kinda hope still happens. So I haven't been adamantly against more Matrix stories, as I think it's a very fertile universe for innovative (both visually and conceptually) sci-fi storytelling and not one that's really been over-exploited yet at this point IMO.

As far as this Drew Goddard project goes, I'm not going to rush to any conclusions. I hope for the best. I've enjoyed a bunch of projects that his name is attached to, so I've got no reason to be outright negative at this point. And if it's not good, then I'll just be happy that Lily got to make her own epilogue to the trilogy and reunite Neo and Trinity. It's a movie that almost shouldn't exist and she still got to make it. Hopefully Goddard will take that movie to heart and try to keep pushing forward with new ideas rather than mining it for nostalgia.

BatLobster coming in with the best takes like always.

Mind as well keep milking franchises while they still can, I guess.

I got a crazy idea. What if Terry Gilliam helmed this, and even was involved in the script.
The studio needs to give him full freedom to go nuts with the film
Would never happen in a million years and on the off-chance he was even offered, I'd doubt he'd be interested.
