Nic Cage in 'Mandy'

Mandy

By far one of the most imaginative and ghoulish movies that has come out this year. While the plot may be pretty straight forward (and it is), everything else feels like a fever dream that has come to life. Imagine if you're stuck in purgatory but your destination is actually on your way to hell... this is what this movie feels like. I guess you can say this is what every heavy metal fan from the 70s/80s had in their head when they were listening to bands like Dio or Black Sabbath. And what helps the incredible visuals is the incredible score and the late Jóhann Jóhannsson for my money produced his best work. As for the performances, it's mainly Nicolas Cage's show and he delivered a somber yet unhinged performance. He also has his Nic Cage rage moment and it was glorious. I also thought Andrea Riseborough was great as always and man she's such a great great chameleon actor. And holy hell, Linus Roache was so far removed from his role as Thomas Wayne. He was incredible. And for what little time he had in this, Bill Duke was Bill F**kin Duke. If I had any complaints it would be the simple plot and I would have love to see them go all out on the gore early on. Overall, it's a fantastic art house horror revenge flick and this would make for a great double feature with Revenge which also came out this year.
9.5/10

When I die
bury me deep
lay two speakers at my feet
put some headphones in my head
and rock ’n’ roll me when I’m dead

First part is a slow burner, but I didn't mind it. It builds tension that you know is coming. The imagery is candy for the eyes and mind, man. Goddamn. Creepy, bloody, absurd, hilarious. I was not expecting to laugh so much. The anime/cartoon moments were all kinds of hnnnngh. The score is absolutely incredible.

Nic Cage in white underwear with a tiger tshirt and drinking vodka. It felt like I was watching Goku turn super saiyan for the first time. Beautiful.

Eh, waiting for this on home media/digital won't do it justice. My theater was full and had a blast.

Oh, biker gang from hell was insane and awesome. lol

Will be on my top 10 list of the year with no doubt.

For anyone who can't see it theaters, it's out digitally today.

Watching Dio's Holy Diver... man this is definitely one of many inspirations for the movie.

Apparently not... it's on Amazon video.

Watched this last night with a packed audience, and I gotta say, it's the kind of movie worth watching with a huge crowd. Especially if they're mostly Nic Cage fans, which mine seemed to be. You just won't get the same experience with a home viewing! ;)

Now I wouldn't say that I loved the film per se, but I can definitely see why others would, and I still appreciated it for its vision & execution. It was just...too bizarre for me, especially in the first half, with the quasi-intellectual/philosophical dialog that I couldn't really get into. Once the movie fully devoted to Nic Cage's revenge story though about halfway through, I got hooked, and it was just awesome from that point on.

The movie definitely felt like a love letter to the 70s/80s, from the cinematography (it totally nailed the grainy look films from that time had), to the music, to the visuals—not just the images on the screen, but the way that certain characters looked as well, and also the way that some scenes were lit. As mentioned above, Dio had to have been an influence, along with other metal bands from that era. And in a taped interview that was shown after the movie, the director said that his major film influences were Mad Max: The Road Warrior and Army of Darkness—I haven't seen those yet, but will have to do that soon now.

As a Nic Cage vehicle, this totally delivered and then some. My audience ate up pretty much every crazy thing he did, and laughed at most of them. Total must-see for any self-professed Nic Cage fans. The only thing about it that partially turned me off was the art-house style feel to it, which I wasn't expecting to be as much as it was. The metal bands of the era that provided inspiration for the movie were also before my time, so I didn't really get those references either—I mean, I know of bands like Dio, Iron Maiden, Metallica, etc, but I'm not familiar with their music at all. The first bands I really got into as a kid was back in the 90s when U2, Radiohead, and electronic music were popular. :o

Just watched this, and highly enjoyed it. The story/plot is rather simple, but the atmosphere made it up for me. As comparisons to old metal videos I don't know. I was a metal kid as a teen in the early 80s, and although much of that music still feels timeless for me (and not only nostalgic, but more in the way decades older music also feels timeless as well), I laugh kinda hard at many of those videos today. But I guess I can see some influences.

Anyway, Cage was awesome, and Andrea Riseborough is really underrated IMHO.

I’ve been under this movie’s spell nonstop; I can’t stop thinking about it. It has such a specific, singular operatic voice. This one has left a mark.

I didn’t think I’d see another movie in 2018 that leveled me the way ANNIHILATION did, but here it is. Two honest-to-god all-timers. What a ****in’ great year for movies.

Such an awesome flick. Nic Cage has never been better, and I loved how the director incorporated his Nic Cageness in two scenes specifically that had me laughing quite a bit. I think most surprising of all though is the fact that I was just gobsmacked by how effing beautiful and trippy the visuals are in this film. I was seriously mesmerized by it at times and even though the first act is kind of slow and it takes a while to get to the action I never found it boring. It really is the definition of aesthetically pleasing from the cinematography to that awesome retro 70's score. Oh and the gory, over the top violence is pretty damn satisfying too.

Can you guys please spoil the ending? On the planet I am on I won’t get it until well into next year

Alright, I'm sold. I'll try to check it out in the couple of days.

That scene was remarkable to see with an audience. Cage starts hitting those 4th-gear notes he's so well known for and you could feel the crowd getting ready to laugh. He was finally going full-on Cage, but then like a second and a half later, the yelling turns into raw sobs. The mood in the room turned instantly. What was about to be a laugh just vanished.

What a movie, loved it. I don't expect seeing more visually gorgeous film this year

7/10. Retro-wave inspired visual collage with a very basic straight-forward narrative.

Something live action Max Payne (first game) can be in right hands. But it won't.

This is how you do a stylish movie. Where the style and substance go hand in hand and the style doesn't overtake the movie. This was great. And Cage was surprisingly more understated than I thought he'd be in this. This man is a true genius and one of our greatest current actors. Anyone who disagrees with me I will fight in the goddamn street.
