PBS explains the magical math behind 'No Man's Sky'

No Man's Sky is impressive. It's a mind-bogglingly massive game and from what we've seen, it's pretty to boot. But enough about that -- let's talk about math. Specifically, the math that makes this game possible. The YouTube channel PBS Game/Show has collected the numerical information that makes No Man's Sky tick and presents it in a lovely, straightforward fashion for everyone to enjoy. No Man's Sky lead Sean Murray makes a few appearances in the video, of course, and we got a one-on-one, hands-on demo of the game with him during E3. Suffice it to say, 10 minutes isn't long enough to properly enjoy No Man's Sky -- but a lifetime probably won't be long enough, either. See for yourself below.

Holy geez. It's so ambitious! I can see why people have their doubts, but I really hope it works out. The whole algorithm business could be groundbreaking.

I'm not sure I'll buy No Man's Sky day-one, as I'd like to make sure there isn't some monumental screw up with the whole thing, but if the feedback is good I'm all over it.

Man, I love every bit of info we get. But...hm...being so big and fast with so much things going on. I fear the game will be super glitchy.

It's interesting to me where they're choosing to show the game off at. First Colbert and now a New Yorker function. I wonder what the strategy is there. Do maybe they think this has a way of appealing to people who are traditionally non-gamers? I feel it's doubtful with what little we've actually seen of the game, but maybe.

I doubt they're going after the typical 13-45 gamer set with this one. Probably more non-traditional types.

I'm not exactly sure what makes a game 'indie' exactly, but as far as I know No Man's Sky is being published by the developers, Hello Games. I think Hello Games has about ten employees. Take it with a grain of salt because I don't entirely know what I'm talking about, but if ten people are developing and publishing the game I'd say that probably counts as Indie.

If that is the case, I guess it could change between now and June though. I imagine developing a game and publishing a game are two very different challenges. That's not to say the folks at Hello Games aren't capable of doing both, only that it wouldn't surprise me if they outsource the publishing side of things to a more experienced company.

is this game still considered indie?

An indie developer is one that operates on its own and isnt owned by a bigger corporation. An indie game is one published by an indie developer. This title definitely is one. Publishing a game isnt all that challenging. The challenge comes in the budget for it bc it can get expensive. Publishing entails shipping and physical manufacturing as well as certification, marketing and promoting. Being a digital title helps cut down on this significantly as you eliminate the costs associated with physical distribution, which is why so many indie games exist today.

Hello Games is publishing it. Its kind of late in the game to get a publisher with so much invested. They would know if they couldnt handle it and needed outside help. If anyone was going to publish this game, it would be Sony, considering how interwined this game is with them. I was actually shocked to read that they weren't publishing it. Sony wont officially be publishing the game but they've already helped them so much with promoting and gaining this game recognition and will in all likely continue to help with the marketing push when its ready to go out. Publishing really shouldnt be too difficult for them considering Sony's already invested. The big rumor is that this will be a PS VR title and if thats the case, they probably have an arrangement to help them get the game out either by paying or reducing the costs with distribution on PSN
