At least it wasn't like the World Trade Center where it was once this historic building that once existed but now doesn't. It's weird thinking about that and how these things are gone.

I dont even want to think about how much worse this could have been. I get pissed everytime I read about or someone mentions the destruction of the Library of Alexandria or ancient sites being destroyed for building supplies in medieval times and dont even get me started on ISIS destroying historical sites. Losing Notre Dame would be a blow for history, Paris, and Catholics. Losing it to a random fire would be like a cruel joke.

Yeah. And ISIS has destroyed ancient Greek, Christian, Roman, and Persian sites. Parts of Palmyra dated as far back as 7500 BC. And those ********ers blew it up. They claim its idolatry and sinful to respect, study, and cherish those "pagan" sites.

It does look a lot better than I feared, to my untrained eye. The only good that can come out of this is that it can be rebuilt with stronger, less flammable material.

Still, the fire actually had me choked up for a while.

I'd be shocked if they could do it in 5 years... I think that's just Macron trying to be all "look at how much I care!". I think the other estimates I've seen of 10-15 years are probably closer (though even those could be hopeful estimates).

In today's live stream....looks like they're getting wooden platforming up across pieces of the roof (same side where they removed that statue yesterday). Either to act as a temporary covering or to help assist them reach additional areas of the roof to assess damage/do work... most likely a combination of both.

Sadly, the 3 black churches that were burned down in the US because of a racist loser aren't getting nearly that much to re-build.

Yeah, I saw that yesterday.... I mean, I imagine with all the probably millions and millions of photographs and who knows how many studies that have been done of the cathedral by others over the years they're probably not hurting for reference material to help with the rebuild, but it is cool that a video game might be able to help in some way.

920 mil has been donated so far. Granted I'm glad it's coming in but it also shows that people around the world really could do more with their money if they wanted to regarding poverty and other things. But it's their money.

To be fair Notre Dame is more than just a building. It's a cultural and religious icon for millions of French and 1+ billion Catholics and countless historians and countless non religious people world wide. Its 700 years old. It's a major tourist attraction too. The longer it takes to repair it the more damage will accumulate. And cathedrals carry more meaning in Catholicism than buildings do in protestant christianity. Protestants typically consider the people to be the church. The building is ultimately inconsequential which is why most protestant congregations will use any ol building they can find if they have to. In the South in particular protestant congregations meet in abandoned video stores, old convenient stores, old grocery stores etc. if that's the best they can do. Protestant churches are also much more recently built. So you cant really compare the outpouring of support to rebuild Notre Dame with support to rebuild 3 black churches. Or 3 protestant churches in a white or Hispanic or Asian community.

It is sadly one of those things that Americans will never really be able to understand. The Native Americans in the north never really had such construction projects. And a lot of our early buildings were not really built to last like some of the stuff in Europe. We don't have that much sense of history.

Don't get where the negativity is coming from with some people being annoyed that some of the mega rich are donating money to it. People can spend their money on whatever they like.

France is to invite architects from around the world to submit their designs for a new spire to sit atop a renovated Notre-Dame cathedral.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe told reporters they hoped for "a new spire that is adapted to the techniques and the challenges of our era".

Saw this post as well and I had to share it as I thought it was a perfect response to the negativety I have seen

I really dont like the idea of redesigning the spire and roof. It shouldnt be adapted for our era because that cathedral isnt of or a part of our era. And making it a competition between architects is just gaudy.

People can donate their money to whatever they want. Also all of the billionaires donating to Notre Dame are French.
