Disney Developing Live-Action 'Hunchback' Movie With Josh Gad, David Henry Hwang
The studio is developing a live-action remake of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Disney is tapping Tony-winning playwright David Henry Hwang to pen the feature that will draw from the 1831 Victor Hugo novel and the 1996 Disney animated movie.

Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz, who earned an Oscar nomination for their work on the 1996 feature, will return to handle the music. The movie will not draw from the staged Hunchback production from Menken and Schwartz.

Mandeville is producing along with Josh Gad, who starred in Mandeville and Disney's 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast, which grossed more than $1 billion at the box office.
Like it or not, we're getting a Hunchback remake. It's still unclear if Josh Gad will also play Quasimodo.

This sounds like a bad idea. While I thought Hunchback was one of the best films of the Renaissance, the public thought it was too dark and it was considered a box office disappointment. There isn't the market nor demand of something like Beauty and the Beast or Aladdin.

A live action film that is closer to the novel much like the stage adaptation could do well, Hunchback, much like Les Miserables isn't a happy story and I think what Disney did later on with the stage adaptation was the best of both worlds, the amazing score and songs with the original story mostly intact.

What the ****.

Make the gargoyles imaginary instead of actually real and you already improve Quasimodo's character from the animated movie.

That being said, cautiously interested in this.

I am SO excited, this is the one live action movie I actually wanted! But...

Deadline is reporting they won't be drawing from the stage show. It's bad enough to not use the right ending, but why in the world would they not use the new songs Menken and Schultz wrote for the stage? If "Made of Stone" and "Place of Miracles" aren't in this movie, that will be a HUGE letdown.

Yeaaaah...not really excited for this one. Not doubting the quality, just zero enthusiasm. Gad is really up Disney's ass lately. Not sure how I feel about that.

If Josh Gad is playing Quasimodo, this is a non starter for me.

I guess much like Beauty and the Beast, they want new songs to be eligible for awards.

I think the fact they drawing from the novel makes me think they might go down the more darker route.

Eh, I like him. He's never really taken on a hardcore dramatic role before, but he has the voice for it and I don't think he'd have any issue with the prosthetics masking his face. I'm really interested in who gets cast for the rest of the show, though. They need to get some big stars, since this is a riskier property for them. Really hoping to get Hugh Jackman as Frollo

Yes yes yes! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I don’t care how many live-action remakes Disney makes so long as Hunchback is at the end of the tunnel. Hire Hugh Jackman as Frollo, get the script right, and you’ve got a legitimate Oscar contender in this movie.

The article makes it sound like Gad will be producing, not performing in the movie.

Well, he is the right age and look. The question would be why would he only produce for a character that matches his “look” and could garner him awards acclaim.

Josh Gad is kind of awful.

I actually really love Hunchback, it's in my top 5 for Disney animated films.

Yeah if Gad is Quasi I won’t exactly be thrilled...

This seems like a movie that would be better off premiering on their streaming service.
