NYC Comic-Con demands attendees shower and wear clean clothes

I've gotta say, as someone who has gone to NYCC every day for the past few years, and whose personal hygiene is of major importance before I leave, there's only so much that can be done. There are large herds of people who come to the con walking for about 5-6 long NYC blocks from where the nearest train drops off, and by the time that I've gotta there each day, I was a little sweaty and that's without any baggage or costumes. So I can imagine how bad it must get for other people.

With that said though, I agree that this is an event that has become bigger than the venue its held in. I went Thursday, which was supposed to be a limited admission day where most things like games and panels are freed up, but it was just as pack as any other day yesterday. Today was worse and tomorrow is anticipated to be even worse. And of course, Sundays are awful because everybody brings their kids, including those who need strollers to get by. Plus there's the whole issue of people walking around with hue back packs and luggage that just adds to the frustration of trying to walk around.

I was at NYCC tonight and saw this, so the smell might be the least of the problems. :funny:

I didn't notice any smell at the Javits, but you can see how it would happen. It's totally overcrowded, which makes the place hot and uncomfortable. In fact, I'm headed back there tomorrow and warned the people I was going with to dress light (as in no heavy jackets or long-sleeves) since it was going to be even more crowded, hot, and uncomfortable.

Hell, between three hours at NYCC and the walk to the Port Authority after, I wanted to take a shower after getting home tonight, but I was too tired. Rest assured, I'll be taking one before I go back tomorrow.

I wonder if they have this kind of problem at porn conventions or if it smells like an Axe Body Spray factory exploded.

Haha, I got a few pics of him. :funny:

Yes!

Normally I'm the type of person who hates the cold and wears about 3 or 4 layers even in 50-60 degree weather, but I was reminded yesterday why the cold is just something I'm going to have to learn how to deal with on the walk there. I had a sweater and an umbrella yesterday and it made walking around very uncomfortable for me. Even today, I ditched the umbrella and sweater, and walked around with just a long sleeve shirt with a tee shirt over it and it still felt too muggy inside. Luckily the weather is supposed to be a little warmer tomorrow so I might just go with a tee shirt.

That guy was hilarious. I posted that on Facebook and one of my friends said he did that last year too. :funny:

And when I checked the weather this morning, it was supposed to be cold and rainy, so I was wearing my heavier rain jacket. I came straight from work, so I was in jeans (yay casual Friday!) and a long sleeve shirt. When I left work, it wasn't raining and it was warm and muggy out. Plus I had my backpack from work, so by the time I'd gotten there I was already hot and uncomfortable. Of course, I took a shower this morning and was wearing clean clothes...but I can imagine what someone who wasn't must have been like.

Again, I didn't notice anyone stinking up the place. But it's good advice, nonetheless.

Tomorrow I'm going in my jeans and my Walking Dead t-shirt.

Yeah I remember seeing him last year too. Here's a pic I took of him today.

Yeah that's what happened to me yesterday. I took a half day from work, so I came dressed in my work clothes (which luckily for me is very casual considering its a "corporate" job) and was prepared for the cold weather from that morning. And maybe its because I'm used to it, but there were only a few brief moments where I noticed a smell. But then again, I've had nose issues for a while where I don't smell things as strongly as others do.

I can smell that image from here. Oy.

Last year was awful. Most of the problem (I truly, honestly hope) is that the event is bigger than the venue (which given the size of the Javits center, is ridiculous) and if you put that many people in that cramped a space for that long, it gets funky.

That's probably true in part. People should make every effort to be clean, but every con I've ever been to eventually gets hot because of the glut of people. I always take regular brakes outside because I hate to be in a large crowd and start to sweat.

Sometimes I wonder if it's just one guy, who wanders around the halls spreading his pestilence in his wake.

For what it's worth, it's not Norman Reedus. I had a friend who met him last year and she said he smelled like flowers.

i demand that all panel members lose weight. there better be no fatties up there.

That's not fair. What if they instituted a "no skinny runts" policy, which would exclude Andrew Garfield?

Everyone knows "nerd musk" is the most irresistible aroma to beautiful actresses who come to comic con.

So this rule is just player hating. :ninja:

Oh man, did I ever get a massive laugh out of this. I tip my hat to thee, Decoy.

I don't think I'll ever get aroused again...

Kinda off topic, but are cons good places to meet girls? I mean..who doesn't want to meet a cute girl that's into comics?

They should hold these conventions in places with air con or atleast a venue with good ventilation.

Same here. It's not like it's an issue solely related to Comic-Con...that could be any rush hour at Port Authority or Penn Station when so many people are jammed together. I'm happy to lose the backpack and jacket today though that's for sure.
