Got some more information for Lars Von Trier's next film after Melancholia, which it's currently titled Nymphomaniac and is slated to start shooting the summer of next year.

Von Trier is currently researching the project, which will follow “the erotic life of a woman from the age of zero to the age of 50.” The film’s storyline will unfold in eight chapters. These have such titles as “The Western and Eastern Church” and “The Little Organ School.”

“He (Von Trier) is really keen on doing this thing. I think that this will be a very amusing film also, very erotic but very funny also,” Peter Aalbæk Jensen commented. “I guess we have something which could generate some press attention. How pornographic it will be, that we have to see in terms of what financing dictates.”

Considering the subject manner, apparently they're going to do two cuts of the film, one that's hardcore and one that's more suitable for mainstream theaters.

However, the Danish auteur is reportedly planning two versions - one a hardcore cut likely to feature scenes of penetration and a softer version that can be shown in more mainstream cinemas. Despite the likely graphic sexual content, the project is understood to be primarily dialogue-driven.

The project certainly sounds right up in Von Trier's alley but it's also certainly inevitably, an attention grabbing one with the subject of the project and not to mention together with the controversy at the recent Cannes film festival. Anyway I'm a fan of his work so I'm very excited to see what he'll bring for this one. It's interesting that it's comedic, hopefully more than what's usual in his usual films, it'll be a nice switch once in awhile.

Man this thing will get the bible belt here in the US in an uproar. I will enjoy every moment of it. :woot:

This smells too much like Anti-Christ to me. :( (I mean that almost literally).

I don't think it's similar to Antichrist, which Von Trier was going for a horror direction. With this it's more of an erotic direction and in terms of pushing the envelope it's just for the sexual content, which I'm guessing will be graphic (can't expect less from Von Trier) so I don't think it'll have none of the grotesque vibe you got from Antichrist. Plus it'll have comedy in it. :p

I generally support those who push boundaries and seed chaos, even if I don't personally like what they do.

Knowing this guy, hell probably REALLY push the boundaries of showing underage actors in sex scenes.

As for the hardcore version, I wonder if it will feature the mainstream actress in the sex scenes or doubles/inserts.

Lars Von Trier is one of the filmmakers that, even if I don't like what they're doing, can display an artistic talent that's hard not to praise.

With that said, I'm interested to see how he'll tell this story and as a fan of Von Trier, I'm definitely looking forward to this project.

Von Trier wants Stellan Skarsgård, a regular collaborator to be the male lead for the film.

"Lars called me and said, 'Stellan, my next film will be a porno film, and I want you to play the lead in it,'" he said, laughing. "But then he said, 'You will not get to f--k.'"

It'll be nice if that happens but I'm more curious on who'll play the female lead, it's going to take an actress who's brave to take on the role as usual for a Von Trier film but it seems Gainsbourg had a good experience working with Von Trier in Antichrist since she's in Melancholia as well so perhaps he should consider her again for this.

Now here's an article or a more correct term profile on Von Trier where he reflect on his history and also discussing how he's doing after the Cannes "controversy". It's a good read but anyway to the point, there's tidbits about Nymphomaniac.

"It's certainly a real project," von Trier protests at the idea that The Nymphomaniac is a Russ Meyer-like joke. "I am talking to all the girls from when I was young who were screwing around like hell. It's so much fun. They talk for three hours. Even if the film, for some reason, doesn't come to be, I am having a fantastic time researching. Maybe it's not a good sign but I am really excited by this project. And I also have a problem with the sex that we all know is part of our lives before we are 18 years old. Let's see how I handle this. I don't intend to break any laws but it will be an interesting experience."

He has been meeting doctors and psychologists as well as nymphomaniacs and insists that the film will be about ideas as much as about sex.

"Basically, it's a film about sex and then there is a lot of talking, like in the books I am reading now. They talk and talk and talk, which I love. And there is a lot of philosophy. Hopefully, it will be a very messy film. That's what I am looking for, after reading these books. I'd like to make a film that has a lot of different diversions and strange ideas and little parts that have nothing to do with the storyline."

That surely sounds interesting and looking forward to see how it'll come together.

was Gainsbourg in the opening ? i dont think she would film porn scenes.

there are a lot of girls who want fame . and some of them can act.

Yeah it wasn't her, they use body doubles for Gainsbourg and Dafoe in the opening scene and towards the end where it's gets really explicit. It's going to be tough to find an actress who's willing to take the role, now if Von Trier can't find any, well I guess he has to go with that option, getting a porn actress for the lead role, which I hope it won't have to come to since this is going to be more dialogue heavy than his usual film so I want an actress who can act.

This smells too much like Anti-Christ to me. :( (I mean that almost literally).

Just as long as doesn't have similar scenes to when Gainsbourg's character went crazy attacking her husband in the cabin. It's painful for me to remember that.

I think it's safe to say you won't be seeing any of those scenes in here since this will lean more towards to an erotic direction as oppose to Antichrist, although with Von Trier on helm, you might never know.

A synopsis has arrived:

NYMPHOMANIAC is the light and poetic story of a woman's erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-‐diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe.

On a cold winter's evening Seligman, an old bachelor, finds Joe semi‐unconscious and beaten up in an alleyway. After bringing her to his flat he sees to her wounds while trying to understand how things could have gone so wrong for her. He listens intently as she over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-‐out and multi faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.

Charlotte Gainsbourg talking a bit about the film in an interview:

You worked with von Trier again on last year's Melancholia. Is it true that you have signed up for his next film too?

Yes. I haven't read the script; I sort of had to commit to doing the film without reading it.

He has said it will be "hardcore pornography"…

I know he wants to use porn actors as doubles, like we did in Antichrist, so they would do those shots but then we'd do the rest. I don't know up to what point but I know I have limits. I had limits on Antichrist – I remember, he asked me to jerk off the porn actor and that's when I said I couldn't. So we will see what my limit is for the next one.

Good old von Trier, it's going to be interesting following the development of this project.

haha I love that it says it's gonna be a "light and poetic" story. Yeah, sure sure Lars, whatever you say :P

Finally we got some more details. I wonder how far will von Trier push with the sexual content?

I wonder if it will push the MPAA boundary like Ang Lee's Lust, Caution.

Shia!? what in the... thats some left field attack only Lars would come up with. Intrigued by this, I am.

... aaaaand here's me not seeing this.

Sorry Lars, you can voice your support for Naziism, you can show brutal violence against women, but casting LaBeef in one of your movies is a bridge too far. :cmad:
i dont get the hate shia gets is is a very solid actor very underrated imo

even got good reviews for lawless

Yeah, but Shia is the one that will get the top billing. Commercials and media over here will be calling it the Shia movie.
