And for your reading pleasure:

The 78th Annual Academy Awards thread

The Academy Awards ceremonies are a two-hour meat parade, a public display with contrived suspense for economic reasons - George C. Scott

I have nothing against Oscar. I know what he stands for and it's terrific. And I think when people used to hang around and pat each other on the back over a drink and dinner it was wonderful. But when it became an international hoopla, where careers lived and died on whether or not you did or didn't get an Oscar, then it got out of hand. - also said by George C. Scott

Babel been a mixed bag of nuts in terms of praise. The Departed is great but the last act universally is considered far too off the wall and I think is really what's going kill it's chances. LfIJ came out of left field and The Queen seems to be oscar bait. Little Miss Sunshine is just a great film with a really heart felt message, that's why I'm betting it takes home the gold.

BEST ACTOR:
Leonardo DiCaprio in “Blood Diamond”
Ryan Gosling in “Half Nelson”
Peter O'Toole in “Venus”
Will Smith in “The Pursuit of Happyness”
Forest Whitaker in “The Last King of Scotland”

Peter O'Toole was building a lot of steam but I think it cooled down. The amount of praise Whitaker gotten for this role has been tremendous so I'm betting he's got this snagged.

BEST ACTRESS:
Penélope Cruz in “Volver”
Judi Dench in “Notes on a Scandal”
Helen Mirren in “The Queen”
Meryl Streep in “The Devil Wears Prada”
Kate Winslet in “Little Children”

CAn't be completly sure in this catagory...

BEST DIRECTOR:
“Babel” Alejandro González Iñárritu
“The Departed” Martin Scorsese
“Letters from Iwo Jima” Clint Eastwood
“The Queen” Stephen Frears
“United 93” Paul Greengrass

The man's been passed up 4-5 times already, it's time to give him his damn oscar....

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alan Arkin - Little Miss Sunshine
Jackie Earle Haley - Little Children
Djimon Hounsou - Blood Diamond
Eddie Murphy - Dreamgirls
Mark Wahlberg - The Departed

Some great contenders here but Murphy became the role. He takes a character from such a high and to such a low, and he tottally related that in the music. I remember there's on scene where there is no dialouge and just a look, and he communicated so much simply from the look, I'm hoping he gets it.

PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Adriana Barraza - Babel
Cate Blanchett - Notes on a Scandal
Abigail Breslin - Little Miss Sunshine
Jennifer Hudson - Dreamgirls
Rinko Kikuchi - Babel

Hudson stole the show in Dreamgirls, it was funny since the movie revolved around Beyonce and she really did nothing in the film, it were her co-stars that really made this film impressive.

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Sacha Baron Cohen & Anthony Hines & Peter Baynham & Dan Mazer - Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
Alfonso Cuarón & Timothy J. Sexton & David Arata & Mark Fergus & Hawk Ostby - Children of Men
William Monahan - The Departed
Todd Field & Tom Perrotta - Little Children
Patrick Marber - Notes on a Scandal

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
Guillermo Arriaga - Babel
Iris Yama****a - Letters From Iwo Jima
Michael Arndt - Little Miss Sunshine
Guillermo del Toro - Pan's Labyrinth
Peter Morgan - The Queen

This is just based on the fact that I've only see Miss Sunshine and Labyrinth...

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM OF THE YEAR
After the Wedding
Days of Glory (Indigenes)
The Lives of Others
Pan's Labyrinth
Water

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM OF THE YEAR
Cars
Happy Feet

I know that Whitaker will take it (I'm happy about it), but I love Will Smith and really think he should win.

The Departed is great but the last act universally is considered far too off the wall and I think is really what's going kill it's chances.

Love the word choice here. ;)

Though, I'm confused as to what you mean by "off the wall" in regards to the last act.

I hope LMS doesn't win best picture, but hey, I barely ever agree with the Academy.

Pretty much where I would see it except for the Best Picture category. I know Babel will probably win it...but I liked the Departed better.

My guess is movies is referring to the fact the main characters all get killed

Though, I'm confused as to what you mean by "off the wall" in regards to the last act.

Everyone being offed in the last five minutes, that's got be the most jam-packed five minutes I've ever seen committed to film. Like you just don't see it coming, all of them dying, well I did because I saw the original. However, the problem was it didn't fit as well since the way it was setup in the original Matt Damon's character wasn't such a dick and you actually felt sorry for his position. That's what I mean the ending due to the way the movie is set up just makes you leave theatre detached from the movie because you say to yourself, damn those writers I wish they wrote it differently. Is that the audience's fault or hte movie's, it's hard to say, however it's going hurt it come voting time. But it's so well directed that I think it's a shoe-in but not for best picture.

Just rented Monster House, I'll come back with my thoughts...

I hope LMS doesn't win best picture, but hey, I barely ever agree with the Academy.

I've said it once and I'll say it again, go by nominations and you'll be a much happier man. Most of the time I got to say the Academy is spot on when it comes to nominations, of course there's always or two people who miss a nomination, but nothing can be perfect considering your dealing with hundreds of movies a year. But when comes down to choosing just one for hte best, is rather subjective, so I really go by nominations rather than wins. If a movie is nominated, I go out and see it, rather than if it just wins since I've disagreed with winners many times in the past, but not nominations.

However, the problem was it didn't fit as well since the way it was setup in the original Matt Damon's character wasn't such a dick and you actually felt sorry for his position.

But wait, are you citing Infernal Affairs' characterizations and saying that that leads to a flaw in The Departed?

I found Damon's character's demise to be a rather pleasing conclusion to The Departed. The dude had to get his, and he certainly did.

That's what I mean the ending due to the way the movie is set up just makes you leave theatre detached from the movie because you say to yourself, damn those writers I wish they wrote it differently.

When I saw the film for the first time, I was more blown away than detached by the ending. My initial thought was, "I can't believe they had the balls to do what they just did." It was incredible.

And having seen the film in both a crowd of snobbish film students (who pretty much all sang the film's praises) and my own parents (who loved it), I'm interested in seeing how many people actually were turned off by the ending.

I've seen the film twice and for myself Is that the audience's fault or hte movie's, it's hard to say, however it's going hurt it come voting time.

*sigh* That's just beyond ridiculous. Violence, no matter how brutal and sudden, shouldn't be a turnoff, especially when it's handled in an exquisitely tragic manner. We'll see.

So whos watching this I think tomorrow right ?
