Too bad the special edition is EU only, I'll be sticking to the download copy in that case. So stoked that Majora's Mask is getting the portable treatment, it's quite possibly my favorite game of all time so I'm gonna play the hell outta this.

Can't wait for MM 3D (possibly my favorite LoZ game), once the 'New' 3DS comes out, I will need to catch up on the games I missed out on since the OG 3DS was released.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D Has Been In Development Since 2011. November 8, 2014 . 12:32pm

“We’ve spent a lot of time making sure the gameplay experience is smoother than in the original version,” says Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has been asked many times over the past couple of years whether or not a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was on the way, and nearly every single time, he’s used the occasion to be a playful tease. That’s because the game’s 3DS remake has been in development for three years.

“The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D was actually in development almost immediately after we finished working on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, which was released in June of 2011,” Aonuma revealed on Miiverse. “So although we’ve been working on the game for quite some time, we didn’t want to say it was being developed until we were at a point where we could proudly say that this is not going to be just another remake and that it’s going to be worth your time.”

Aonuma later stated in his Miiverse post, “We’ve spent a lot of time making sure the gameplay experience is smoother than in the original version without taking away from this unique world. I hope those that haven’t played the original game, and those of you that played it but gave up mid-way through will take this opportunity to give the new version a try.”

The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D will be released Spring 2015.

Sheik And Toon Link Amiibos To Be Compatible With Hyrule Warriors. November 11, 2014 . 1:31pm

In a recent update to their Amiibo website, Nintendo have announced that the upcoming Sheik and Toon Link Amiibos will work with Hyrule Warriors.

The Link and Zelda Amiibo figurines won’t be the only ones that are compatible with Hyrule Warriors. In a recent update to their Amiibo website, Nintendo have announced that the upcoming Sheik and Toon Link Amiibos will work with the game as well.

Just what functionality Toon Link and Sheik will bring to the game hasn’t been announced yet. (Regular Link and Zelda will both unlock weapons in the game.)

Additionally, Nintendo also confirmed last week that all of the Smash Bros. Amiibos will be compatible with Hyrule Warriors; although, outside of the four mentioned above, these Amiibos will only unlock materials or Rupees.

I guess Ganon will probably unlock a weapon for him, too, once his comes out. Would make sense. I like how every figure does something, even if it's something minor like give you a weapon or material.

Aonuma: Majora's Mask remake will be different on New 3DS

The upcoming remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask will offer a different experience when played on Nintendo's revamped 3DS hardware, series producer Eiji Aonuma told Famitsu this week (via Nintendo Everything).

While Majora's Mask 3D will retain the same visual quality and presentation across 3DS hardware generations, Aonuma hints that additional features are in store for New Nintendo 3DS early adopters. "Please wait for the opportunity to discuss how playing on the New 3DS differs at a later date," he told Famitsu.

The New Nintendo 3DS, announced in August and released in Japan last month, features an enhanced CPU, additional shoulder buttons, and a second "C-stick" analog pad. A North American release date for the New Nintendo 3DS is not yet known.

Aonuma Says The Legend of Zelda For Wii U Looks Even Better Since E3. November 14, 2014 . 4:15am

“At the moment, it’s currently looking even more amazing than what we got to show you at E3,” says Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma.

Earlier this summer, we got a first look at the Legend of Zelda game for Wii U, which takes place in a vast open world. Series producer Eiji Aonuma shared more in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine about its latest developments.

During the interview, Famitsu brings up the new Legend of Zelda game that was showcased during this year’s E3, and state that it was pretty well-received by fans.

Aonuma replies that it was indeed well-received, and he was told by many people that it looked beautiful. Since the new Legend of Zelda game will take place in a vast world, what we saw from the E3 video was a result of brainstorming through various ideas.

Aonuma explains, “Rather than seriously considering something photorealistic using the real world as a model, the vision comes from inspiration by Japanese animation and such from the past that I may or may not have watched before. That’s how the [vision] came to be.”

He emphasizes, “At the moment, it’s currently looking even more amazing than what we got to show you at E3!”

Next, Famitsu points out that the video even showed a giant monster. According to Aonuma, a monster like that, that will require you to go on a high-speed chase while riding on a horse and figuring out what to do, is something new to the series.

The idea, he says, came from thinking “if there were such an enemy, how would one defeat it?” What we saw at E3, according to Aonuma, was just a glimpse of how this will be done. He also says there will be more to see next year.

“We’re definitely at a stage of trial-and-error, but we’re starting to see the characteristics of what it’s like to have a Legend of Zelda game that plays in vast and seamless world,” Aonuma tells Famitsu. “I believe we’ll be able to show something new again during next year’s E3.”

The new Legend of Zelda for Wii U is expected to release sometime in 2015.

Thought this was pretty interesting: apparently, Captain Toad started out as a Zelda concept before it appeared in 3D World.

Year's ago, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker director Shinya Hiratake had a dream for a game set in a series of small diorama-like levels where the hero couldn't jump. Instead players moved the camera around the diorama, guiding their hero through a dangerous environment before finding the exit. That hero was, of course, Link.
Before Captain Toad ever made his debut in Super Mario 3D Land, Hiratake dreamed of a game set inside smaller worlds. He had reasoned that if he removed the jumping mechanic from a platformer that he could shrink a game's levels by a significant degree. However, Hiratake figured that this kind of a game wouldn't fit into the Mario universe since most of those characters could jump. The Legend of Zelda's Link however, would be the perfect protagonist for a game like this.
Hiratake and a small team actually worked up a small tech demo of what a diorama-like game starring Link would look like and presented it to several of Nintendo's higher ups. "We must have done too good of a job with our demo," says Hiratake, "because during our presentation, Mr. Miyamoto asked us how we were planning on bringing these dioramas into production. He thought we were pitching him an actual physical product design."
The idea of a diorama-like game starring Link was shot down during that meeting, but Miyamoto did conceded that the idea had some potential, and the team was allowed to incorporate the idea into Super Mario 3D Land as a minigame. Unfortunately, the team now had to find a new star. Hiratake remembered that in the original Super Mario Galaxy a Toad had wore a backback, and figured that if a Toad was weighted down by a backpack, he wouldn't be able to jump.
After the release of Super Mario 3D Land, Miyamoto actually approached the team and encouraged them to take the concepts in the Toad Tracker minigame and expand them into a full blown title. "We like to think that Mr. Miyamoto finally realized the vision we had for a diorama those many years ago," says Hiratake.

On one hand that's disappointing, because I wish Nintendo wouldn't be so precious about Zelda and be more experimental with it. On the other hand I'm glad Toad is getting the spotlight for once.

Agreed. I think the low sales of Majora's Mask really soured them from experimenting with Zelda much, as far as structure and core elements anyway (WW was a great visual experiment). But with Hyrule Warriors, I feel like maybe they're open to it more at least.

With Nintendo it seems to be one of two extremes. Very few games, or... in my opinion, too many.

In five years you have more than a dozen Mario games, including main titles, handheld titles, racing games, sports games, and party games. Not even counting rereleases, and spin offs (Luigi, Yoshi, Wario, etc). Not really sure what to qualify Paper Mario as. Spinoff?

In that same time period you have two, maybe three new Zelda games across both consoles.

Which, I guess is preferable. Though one more game couldn't hurt.

Or a spinoff. I've always wanted to see a game focused on Zelda or Ganondorf, personally.

The amount of Mario games isn't that bad, in the end. Each spinoff generally has it's own identity, and we rarely get more than one or two per generation of those spinoffs with the exception of Mario Party that had multiple entries per generation for some reason. It makes sense, since Mario is the brand in which Nintendo is really built upon. That is the franchise, even if it's not mine or many others personal favorites.

I would definitely be up for more Zelda per gen, though. Keep it at one or two "mainline" games, but have spin-offs akin to Hyrule Warriors scattered throughout. I think Zelda is a pretty solid number 3 or 4 as far as their franchises go, so I think it's plausible that spin-offs will be able to sustain themselves.

Well, as long as the main titles don't suffer, it doesn't really bother me.

Hyrule Warriors just wasn't for me, but I can see promise in experimentation.

Even if it's inside the company. For example, a Zelda game done by the team who make Fire Emblem and Advance Wars.

Nintendo should do some work on their other franchises. Put out an F-Zero, Metroid, Fire Emblem, Advance Wars and other original titles on the Wii U. They have such a strong stable of characters, that they really have no good reason to explore these other franchises. I think an Advance Wars game on Wii U could be pretty good.

Battalion Wars was alright. I really liked the dark direction they took with Days of Ruin, so I would hope for something more along those lines.

I don't understand why they aren't doing anything with Metroid. That could be their answer to Halo.

Fire Emblem is getting a Wii U installment with FE X SMT. It's not been seen since announcement, but has been confirmed to be still in development. Advance Wars has been MIA for awhile, not sure why, guess maybe they're focusing on FE and doing that Codename: STEAM game, too. F-Zero I gave up on, they just don't seem interested in making an actual game of that again.

I don't understand why they aren't doing anything with Metroid. That could be their answer to Halo.

They've mentioned that ideas for Metroid have been talked about for both the Wii U and 3DS, so there's probably something in the planning stages. Though I've never understood why people think this about Metroid. It isn't, nor has ever been, anything like Halo in the least.

Sure, I loved Prime, but the approach to gameplay and storytelling were so radically different from Halo that I never associated them at all.

I never saw the connection between Metroid and Halo outside of a lead character in future sci-fi armor. Metroid and Halo are entirely different animals IMO. Metroid is about exploration. Halo is about 'splosions.

Yeah, I'm not getting the comparison either. Personally, I wouldn't want another first-person Metroid.

Well, when I said "answer to Halo", I simply meant an excellent FPS exclusive that moves consoles. I don't want Metroid to be more like Halo. Well, actually I wouldn't mind if it was in some areas.

I also wouldn't mind if Halo took some notes from Metroid... or Fallout (i.e. more than "'splosions"), but I'll save that for another thread.

On that I agree. A solid FPS, first party FPS, would be good for Nintendo.

I'm kind of the same. I loved all the Prime game, but I'd like to see another take on the franchise despite the misfire of Other M (though I didn't think that one was that horrible myself).

Well, how would it be that? It already happened, had decent marketing, and it didn't get there. They sold well, but I don't think any of the Prime games cracked 2 mil (if they did, not much else), so they definitely weren't console movers. For that to be a realistic, I think that Metroid would have to be completely up and down reimagined for more mainstream appeal. I'm not sure how I'd feel about that. Unless Prime was kept as some type of mainstream experience while they released traditional Metroids on 3DS or something of that nature.
