"The Master Trials" launches this summer.

Nintendo has announced details on the first downloadable content pack for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is called “The Master Trials” and is due out summer.

Here is the full overview of “The Master Trials,” via Nintendo:

  • Trial of the Sword: By accessing this location, players can challenge the new Trial of the Sword (previously known as “Cave of Trials Challenge”), where enemies appear one after another. Link starts without any armor or weapons, and if he defeats all of the enemies in the room he can proceed to the next area. Trial of the Sword will include around 45 total rooms for players to complete. When Link clears all of the trials, the true power of the Master Sword will awaken and always be in its glowing powered-up state.
  • Hard Mode: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is already considered one of the most thrilling games in The Legend of Zelda series, and fans looking for a challenge are in for a treat with the new Hard Mode. In Hard Mode, the “ranks” of enemies in the game are increased (i.e. Red Bokoblins change to Blue), and players might even encounter higher-ranking enemies they wouldn’t find through normal play. Enemies will also slowly recover health in battle, forcing you to defeat them more quickly. They will also more easily spot Link as he approaches them, making these enemies tougher to sneak up on. In addition, floating planks held aloft by balloons will be scattered around Hyrule. By successfully reaching these planks, players can battle enemies and collect treasure.
  • Hero’s Path Mode: Exploring Hyrule is exciting, but with such a large world it’s sometimes hard for players to remember where they’ve been. To help with tracking progress, the new Hero’s Path Mode will document every step players take, and mark their path in green on the map. The route taken will be tracked for the player’s last 200 hours of play time, with an included slider to track footsteps on a timeline. This even works retroactively, so players that have already put many hours into the game will be able to see where they have traveled. This feature will help in identifying the locations they haven’t visited in this vast world, and may help players find those Shrines they haven’t encountered yet.
  • Travel Medallion: There will be a new treasure chest somewhere in the game world which contains the Travel Medallion. With the Travel Medallion, players can create a temporary new travel point on the map where they are currently standing. Link can then transport himself to that point at any time. Only one travel point can be registered on the map at a time.
  • Korok Mask: By finding the new Korok Mask, players will have a much easier time finding Korok locations in the game. When equipped, the mask will shake, indicating that a Korok is hidden somewhere nearby.
  • New Equipment: Eight new pieces of equipment inspired by previous characters and games in the series will be added to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild after downloading the first DLC pack. Once discovered by the player, they will yield equipment themed after fan-favorite games and characters such as Midna, Tingle, Phantom and Majora’s Mask.
“The Master Trials” will only be available as part of an “Expansion Pass” bundle for $19.99, which also includes a second downloadable content pack to be revealed in the future and released this holiday.
Outside of the downloadable content, Nintendo announced that starting today, players will be able to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in one of nine audio languages (Japanese, English, France French, Canada French, German, Spain Spanish, Latin America Spanish, Italian and Russian), with a different language used for on-screen text, by downloading a free software update on Switch, and by downloading the “Voice Pack” from the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available now for Switch and Wii U.

Sounds interesting. Hard mode sounds kind of fun with aerial enemies. Though, dear god, upgrading Lynels...

There's a couple interesting items but that cost is 1/3 of the original game . . . .

On the flipside, you have Fire Emblem's Season pass, which is $5 more than the game itself.

:( this is becoming more and more true

I'm starting to hate this permanent Beta Test society we live in.

Plus, the season pass gets you the other DLC too. So it's not just this stuff you're paying for, it's also what comes in the future.

Are there just two DLCs planned?

That's only the first half of the season pass's content, the second half will be a story expansion and add another dungeon, sounds like it might also expand the game's map.

Nintendo is still very good with DLC.

The fact that the DLC was announced before the release date and that you can't buy the packs separately are both pretty **** practices I wish the industry would stop, but otherwise, the DLC seems very good.

BoTW was definitely a complete game at launch, easily enough content in the game to justify the $60 price tag. There's nothing in this pack that feels like they just cut it out of the game to sell back later, and between this and the story pack later, there should easily be 20 bucks worth of content.

It's pretty fair, overall.

Not necessarily with Zelda, but the graphic is fairly apt for most EA and Actvision titles.

Not gonna argue with that, just saying in the context of this thread the picture doesn't belong, BotW is very much a full game and then some, and the DLC we've just seen is only half the season pass's content, with the other half sounding like it could be fairly substantial.

I agree, I am underwhelmed by the first DLC, but BOTW was definitely a complete game. LA Noire really ruined triple A games and I don't think realize that's where a lot of these issues came from.

That is not even remotely what is happening here.

Thankfully we're between step 2 & 3 of that (Amiibos, to get Epona etc.). The game itself was complete (depending on your thoughts about hardmode) and beatable without the extras. Also the DLC & Amiibos thus far have only enhanced. The DLC now is what DLC is supposed to be. It's pricier than I'd like but what are you gonna do.

My fear is the next Zelda game it's going to get worse.

Though I'm also hopeful that any extra content only further enhances. Maybe an extra memory or shrine that tells the story of 10,000 years ago.

I don't see Nintendo drastically changing directions in DLC anytime soon.

As for the price, remember, this is only the first part of the DLC.

I agree they're definitely far from the worst offenders. They've been good enough to keep it so that you don't need to run and buy and Amiibo, or by some specific expansion pack to complete the story. For the record I hope they keep it that way and just enhance.

Epona being an Amiibo things still irks me though. They could've tied it to the horse fairy bringing her back.

I do feel like the temple of time was under utilized in this though and wonder if some future DLC will make it more relevant.

Well, you still have to run and buy an Amiibo, if you actually want that amiibo. Amiibo functionality doesn't bother me, because I like collection Amiibo.

Unfortunately you need Amiibo's which are discontinued. So your options are either buying from a scalper or spoofing one on a blank NFC tag.

What would you like to see?

[FONT=&quot]After garnering over 50 perfect scores, it's safe to say that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was well received from media and gamers alike. With the game being so popular, it's understandable that Nintendo would look at the features in Breath of the Wild and look to implement them elsewhere.
Series producer Eiji Aonuma has already made it clear that the open-world feature would become a series staple from here on out, though he's said things like that before that never really panned out. In a new interview with Nikkei Trendy, Aonuma detailed that Zelda fans can expect a couple surprises in the future.
Here's a rough translation of the interview:
“First of all I think the point that ‘this is a Zelda’ is big. It’s a series that has been continuing for a long time, if I am to put it in words then perhaps everyone would have thought it’s not that simple to do a ‘reform’.
Furthermore, that reform causes a ‘surprise’ to all our users who have played Zelda until now, since it exceeds their imaginations by a bit, and I think perhaps that’s why they, including the media, have welcomed it with the ‘zeal’.
It’s not an easy thing to be able to answer expectations of all our users, but through this game, I recognized again that the significance of continuing to create the series is right there, so in the future I’d like to repeat doing “great fusses*” and provide ‘surprises’ that exceed everyone’s expectations.”
The question is, what surprises would you like to see in the next Zelda?
