Official 300 Critics Reviews Thread

Another 25% will either not understand the source material, not care, or have an opinion based purely on an initial gut reaction i.e. the several "gay porn" comments that have already surfaced. (Seems like some guys can't look at a muscular male physique and not be a bit insecure)

Yeah, that was pretty funny--espically since it is a little bit of historical accuracy, because that was what Spartans wore, if I remember correctly. Hell, it might have been LESS.

If you really want to be amused wait till the political claptrap begins on the east vs. west venue. It's inevitable. Critics have to prove their superiority and wit by trying to read between the lines and telling you what a movie really means and what the director is really trying to see. Wow, I thought I was watching Talladega Nights.

Oh, one review has already done one better: compared this with the war in Iraq. :whatever:

Whats really silly about that comment is every major action film in the 80's had guys shirtless and as buff as the 300 cast, and they were box office titans. Some of those gay porn comments may come from someone who is insencere, or maybe someone projecting a bit too much on to others. I see killing machines, they see sex machines, to each their own I guess.

Exactly and now what's even funnier , is Man we got tons of naked girls on this movie C'mon ...........

- There is full complete naked ladies on Xerxes's Tent
- There's the partial naked Oracle girl
- There is delicious Lena Headey , The queen showing her body :woot: as well on the movie , in a really hot sex scene ..........

And the idiots talk bout gay **** ........... C'mon

If u're so worried bout the 300 he-mans , change ur habits , go to a gym , try to get like them ........

I sometimes really think there are men who aren't born with 2 balls or not even one ..... what a bunch of sissies

This movie could have 0% on RT and i'd still be there opening day.:oldrazz:

:o Rottentomatoes has always been more of a negative site for movies, same for ain'titcoolnews!!! I swear some of they're reviewers can be the most ignorant people!!!

Comics2film Review

You know that scene in the commercials where the guy says "Will will blot out the sun with our arrows" and the Spartan replies "Then we will fight in the shade."? You could've used almost any exchange from the movie and gotten the same effect. No one speaks - they make proclamations! They are bold, and concerned only with glory and honor! And Sparta! They did battle in a world that looked like a big painting and all the Spartans looked like that old WWF wrestler, Giant Gonzales, who wore a full-body spandex suit with muscles airbrushed on, which was pretty ridiculous for a wrestler, but pretty ****in' awesome for a Spartan. (you can find a picture of Giant Gonzales fighting against the impossible odds known as the Undertaker here).

I want you to know I consider none of what I've written above to be a bad thing. Not every movie should be On Golden Pond.

It was as though someone watched The Lord of the Rings and said "What if we got rid of the elves and dwarves and cut out everything but the battle scenes?" Then they added just a touch of rock music (but not too much to ruin it), made a few of the fights a bit more personal, and threw in just a dash of the Matrix... and it was good. A veritable feast for the eyes.

If any of what I've described appeals to you, then I urge you to rush to your local theatre and take in a viewing of 300. If you are looking for a movie that touches your soul and intrigues you with an intricate plotline, I'd advise you to go elsewhere. But if you like steak, ninjas, battle-elephants and severed limbs, look no further than 300.

I love that comment, totally sums up what I exspect.

I'd say so you already made it your sig. LOL They should put that in a trailer.

i'll post some "local" (so cal) reviews: http://news.fantasymoguls.com/originalcontent/2007/03/review_300_is_o.html i heard his program (radio) when he was talking about the film with jeffrey and ben lyons
and http://www.sdcitybeat.com/article.php?id=1241&atype=Film

i'm waiting on the l.a. times review - not that anything anyone writes will affect how i saw the movie but sometimes they're kind of fun to read anyway, good or bad.

ETA - well i knew steve mason loved the movie but he talks about it a little more and the premiere in his blog there are some spoilers so click with caution if you don't want to know http://www.espnradio710.com/article.asp?id=364179

Devin put up one of his typical reviews on Chud, he gives it a 8/10, but as usual lets his own skewerd personal preference mangle the review so it reads faily mixed (more like a 5.5/10) and calls Frank Miller a Facist.

If you want to read it, go to CHUD and find it, I'm not going to post any links to that guys reviews since my personal opinion is that the guy is a shmuck who obviously hates films based off of comics and graphic novels.

Every review is a personal opinion, as moviemaking is not a perfect science that can be measured with calibers. And I like a lot this review, he dissects the different aspects (Technical, thematical, narrative) very well.
Liked it more than your typical "Wow, cool. Spartans fighting in slo-mo"

My problem with the guy is more personal, his review READS fine, but his attitude, political bullshiete, and general opinions make any review more mixed than it has to be. I know I'm not alone in my distaste for his reviewing style and personal attitude.

Hahaha, this review is awesome. Some snippets:

"The movie "300" is rated R for "RAAAAAR!" and is about as inspirational as "Field of Dreams" multiplied by "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," plus infinity."

"The Spartans are a super-human elite squad of lumberjack pirates who were trained by the the great-great-grandpa of Chuck Norris' paternal ancestor."

"It's called "300" because that's how many stars it deserves. I'm sad I only have four to give."

Acutally they wore a bit more. You can google "Spartan armour" and get an idea. Here's two examples

I think Miller was going for a purist style. Sort of a "Hey, these guys are so bad assed they don't need silly armor" style. And it works. Not that they wore a lot anyway. But like I said, some of these reviewers don't want to see the mythical element. The same ones *****ing about historical accuracy will be the same ones who *****ed about Troy leaving out the Gods and Goddesses, thus, the mythical element.

lolz! :woot: For some reason I couldn't stop laughing at this part:

"The Persians also trot out gimongous armored rhinos and war elephants that got kicked out of the zoo for being too big and angry."

It´s 62% fresh at RT right now... It´s a positive, while not raving rate. I kinda suspected some critics would be squeamish about the blood and guts and were going to focus more on the guys´pecs and abs than the actual movie... Who cares, it´s gonna be a cult classic.

Well, I'd say 60-70% is more mixed than positive.

i agree with ur statement....actually back then they wore next to nothing...the spartans where very obsessed with their bidies...and those ppl who keep comparing it to gay porn...they obviously kno nothing about history, this movie actually is toned down from some of the thins that actually happned.

oops sorry for the double post...that was an accident...my computer messed up

i think the anti "male nudity" is a crock of **** with out complaining about the oracles nipples! i think it is an insecurity in men that would have them complain about a movie that is 10 manlier than they will ever be and right it off as gay????

how does that makes sense? Critiques complaining about "Dudity" in every shot??? Or being a "gay recruitment video" have no place stating their close minded bubbled opinions! If for nothing else... if not history and for nothing else but being a perfect comic book translation... i would have not *****ed about keeping it like it was in the comic book!

try to put logic and make your opinion (general "you") sound smart, but these people are making opinions based off of insecurities about male nudity and the hypocrisies of being fine with the female nudity!
