Official Daft Punk Thread

I'm tempted to listen to the stream but I'll try my best to stay strong, but it's assuring knowing it's great.

Lose Yourself to Dance and Get Lucky should be the most popular ones that gets played on radio 24/7, it's definitely got a MJ vibe. Currently listening to Pengu...I mean Paul Williams track.

Can you imagine had MJ been alive, how radically different this album might have been? The album is DRIPPING with sweet sexy funkalicious goodness.

Wow, what an album. Gave it 5 thorough listens so far. My favorite tracks are "Touch", "Lose Yourself to Dance", Doin' it Right", and "Contact", but all the tracks on the album are wonderful in different ways.

I'm pretty surprised that there aren't more Daft Punk fans here at the Hype...

I have a feeling they'll be blowing up pretty soon due to the new album.

Albums pretty damn good. Loving all the live instruments and how capable it is with different sounds and switching it up. Lot to appreciate here. These guys are always in top form.

So far The Game of Love and Lose Yourself to Dance are my favorites. That could change seeing as the entire album is wonderful. I feel like there is a song for every type of mood on this album.

Agreed. And the remix package will be GLORIOUS.

Daft Punk have claimed that EDM "lacks depth" - and also confessed that they initially thought it had all been made by just one person.

Speaking in this week's NME, which is on newsstands now or availably digitally, the French pair said they didn't listen to a lot of "electronic music".

Asked for their opinions on DJs such as Deadmau5 and Skrillex, the band's Thomas Bangalter said: "Deadmau5? No. I wouldn't listen to Deadmau5 for pleasure. Skrillex we have a lot of respect for. He's said that he saw our live show with the pyramid in 2007 and it made him want to make music, but it feels like he's not copying our formula. He might be the kid that breaks the cycle, but we don't listen to a lot of electronic music. We never did."

His bandmate Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo then added: "I don't know EDM artists or the albums. At first I thought it was all just one guy, some DJ called EDM." When asked if that was because it all sounded the same, he replied" "A little bit, yeah!" while Bangalter added: "Maybe it's just one guy called Eric David Morris."

De Homem-Christo also later compared it to "an energy drink" that's "really efficient on the body", adding: "EDM is energy only. It lacks depth. You can have energy in music and dance to it but still have soul."

Daft Punk release their long-awaited new studio album 'Random Access Memories' on May 20, but the album is currently streaming via iTunes. The LP features collaborations with the likes of Julian Casablancas, Chilly Gonzales and Giorgio Moroder and also includes the single 'Get Lucky' with Pharrell Williams, which held its place at Number One in the Official UK Singles Chart this weekend after passing 100,000 sales per week for the third week in a row.

I have to say it isn't surprising that they don't listen to EDM.They always been their own thing and were placed in the EDM category by people, not because they labeled themselves as such.

It seems to be common for artists who have a lot of popularity and critical praise to not be personally interested in other music in their own genre.

Well, Daft Punk technically fall into the EDM umbrella, in that they have produced a ton of electronic dance music (this album has the most live instruments they've ever used). That's all EDM is -- dance music that is made electronically.

Obviously, they don't make "house music". They've never been pigeon-holed into keeping the same BPM for their tracks (most house music is 128 bpm, hard-hitting, high energy music filled with drops and breakdowns). Daft Punk just does whatever they want. They make good MUSIC, period...whether it's EDM or not.

I just find it odd that Daft Punk, with their legendary status, feels the need the constantly criticize EDM artists and the "scene" in general...yet they praise Skrillex? Doesn't make sense. You have to understand that high energy "rave music" (128bpm house and things like that) is meant for a completely different purpose/listening experience than something like Random Access Memories...yet both types of music can be appreciated by the same people. I frequently go to clubs and have gone to all of the world's best EDM festivals, yet that doesn't stop me from being obsessed with all of Daft Punk's music. They can both co-exist. But symphonically, Daft Punk is on another level.

I totally agree with one thing they said, which is that I wouldn't listen to deadmau5's music for please, either. Most dubstep is trash to me.

The whole album is fantastic, I haven't listened to anything else for the past few days.

I'm loving Fragment of Time, Instant Crush, and Lose Yourself to Dance
