Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread - Part 1

JJJ I agree with you completely. Like you said Ben Reilly is dead, why pick up the mantle of the Scarlet Spider? Let Kaine start his own path and not take Ben's name that kinda bugs. Ben died a hero but so did Johnny Storm, Steve Rogers & [BLACKOUT]Thor[/BLACKOUT] That's change! But it doesn't last, give it 6 months there'll be a OMD or something to reset their deaths. I know there's a demand for Ben so why are they being so stubborn? Lastly your right Kaine got a burial and a tombstone and a last name. Ben got a RIP Brother.... that's weak IMO

Well... read the series. You never know. He might come back. If they planned for him to return in the series, of course Wacker wouldn't spoil it in an interview.

Torch, Cap and the other guy are all big name heroes. I don't think Marvel ever intended for them to stay dead. I wish they would. It's a dumb and cynical publicity stunt to kill off characters knowing full well you don't intend it to last, but just boost sales.

Remember what a big deal it was when they "killed off Superman"? Back then, you thought he'd stay dead (or at least my friends and I did). That's what I miss. When death in comics meant a damn.

Death in comics stopped being anything when Jean Grey came back in 1985...

If your friend thought Superman was dead, then that's cool... but me and my circle of friends knew it was just a publicity stunt and that he wouldreturn...

You just can't kill the iconic heroes for too long...

:o

Is it "fact" that Kaine will indeed take the name "Ben Reilly"?

I'm getting the series.. JJJ just wonder the lasting power.. Marvel cancels books like crazy ( Alpha Flight, Iron man 2.0 Spider Woman etc)

Wacker has a real problem with Ben Reilly.

He is also a bit of an arrogant man towards fans when he interacts with them (he posts over on CBR)

There are several writers (Yost being one of them, and I think Slott may actually be too) who like Ben and I think once we are finally rid of Wacker we might have a chance of getting Ben back

Wacker has done wonders bringing Spider-Man back to life, and I hope he edits these books for a very, very long time.

:yay:

Wacker: Sorry, Spider-Kihl, but there are no plans for Ben Reilly. My belief is that his story was told completely during the 100+ issues of the “Clone Sage” 15 years ago. Bringing him back just to appease a few fans doesn’t seem to be doing any service to that character. He had a complete, highly emotional and final journey and it’s better to leave that story told.

I enjoy what they are doing with the current Scarlet Spider series and they did a nice job of setting it up.

However, this statement does bother me because as someone who was buying those issues hot off the presses and who was reading Wizard magazine at the HORRID articles they would write about how their childhoods were being raped by claiming Ben Reilly was the one true Spider-Man, I feel that Wacker is just giving that fan a line of BS.

No, Ben Reilly's story was NOT completely told. His story was cut short because Spider-Man fans at the time were calling for his head. Marvel, at that time, caved and gave the fans what they wanted.

Unlike the Marvel of today who went through with the ending of the Peter/MJ marriage despite fan outrage. Now I understand sales were a lot higher back then in the mid to late 90s but Marvel pushed me away from reading comic books COMPLETELY when they killed Ben Reilly. Not just Spider-Man but ALL COMIC BOOKS. I didn't pick up another comic until 2002 when I saw the JMS run.

Mr. Wacker, you are wrong. Ben Reilly's story was not completely told. So I call foul on that but the fact they are using Kaine to set up a new Scarlet Spider series is fine. Just don't go and screw it up. :oldrazz:

Well Said SpiderInATree! I'mhoping that this book doesn't kill the Scarlet Spider/Ben Reilly persona.

I am optimistic about it because Yost is a solid writer and they really got a great artist in Ryan Stegman. I hope that Scarlet Spider turns out to be another Venom and Slott keeps up his good track record with the ASM book. The spider-verse has a shot at being the best it's been in a long time!

and as far as "I" am concerned, I think Wacker has done a great job since coming on board keeping the continuity flowing with the slew of writers that he had, as well as all the varying artists...

That is your opinion and in no way am I trying to change that so don't get that impression, but this sentence right here did raise my eyebrows a good bit because if you go back and reread certain books from BND, there are more than a few pretty glaring continuity errors

Nope...

I only wish I worked for Marvel...

... but I'm just a Spider-Man fan of nearly 39 years of reading his comics, watching his cartoons, and playing with his toys... and as far as "I" am concerned, I think Wacker has done a great job since coming on board keeping the continuity flowing with the slew of writers that he had, as well as all the varying artists... and I have enjoyed Spider-Man more NOW in the last 4 years than I ever had in the 20 years prior to BND.

My words are my own.

But thanks for being a big *****e about me having an opinion... :whatever: :whatever: :whatever:

:yay:

wow a touchy reply to a joke comment and you decide to insult me

classy

Show me something from your original post where you are obviously "joking"...

I didn't see one of these... :woot: nor one of these :oldrazz:... hell, I would have accepted either of these guys... :hehe: & :awesome:

But nope... didn't see anything that indicated you were joking...

Hence, my reply...

so you thought I genuinely suspected you of working for Marvel?....right

Anybody read the Point One issue? I was highly angered that I paid 3.99 for just one piece of Scarlet Spider story, considering the other stories held ABSOLUTELY no interest but a lot of the artwork was pretty , but it was pretty cool.

I'm a bit upset that they seem to have done a complete personality transplant between Kaine and Ben Reilly but as a huge Clone Saga nut this is right in my wheel house.

I'm telling you this RIGHT NOW...if you're ANY kind of fan of Ben Reilly, the Clone Saga, or Kaine...this book is for you. And if you order your comics through DCBS the first issue of Scarlet Spider is only .99 cents. So, you have NO EXCUSES! :cmad::oldrazz:

Agreed!

I have a big ol' long box filled with Ben Reilly stories, all in chronological order, that I revisit when I miss the character.

The new Scarlet Spider series is going to be the closest we are going to get to new adventures of Ben Reilly.

I've been buying volume after volume of these clone saga/ben reilly epic books but I haven't read a single one of them yet. I'm waiting for the entire series to be released first and then I'll read all of them in one sitting.

I think I am at an impasse with kaine as the scarlet spider. Somehow the writers have gotten it into their heads that if you remove the physical scars, the mental scars will dissapear as well. Thats just simply not the case when it comes to dealing with individuals who have carried around so much emotional baggage for so long. To use an obscure analogy; Even if a ticking time bomb has been succsesfully disarmed, its still a bomb. It will always be dangerous until its been neutralized.
