Comics Official Fans of Reilly Thread

It would be nice to have someone like Todd Dezago on a Ben Reilly series. His Sensational run with 'Ringo is one of the most underrated runs in Spidey history. Paul Jenkins, while never having written Reilly, has similar sensibilities and style to Dezago and would probably also be good. It needs a writer who can alternate between lighthearted moments and seriousness, just as Reilly does as a character, and those two fit the bill. They also write contemporary realistic dialogue as opposed to the clunky quips and loaded exposition being seen in the 'Clone Saga' mini.

All I know is that after this mini, I don't want to see either DeFalco or Mackie near it. Sorry, Spider-Girl fans, DeFalco is certainly one of the nicest guys in the biz and he had a good Spidey run in the 80's, but I think his current stuff is pretty terrible.

no one talking about clone saga 3???? it finally seems to have taken a somewhat drastic turn from the original and for the first time im hooked to see what happens next

I donno if I will check it out.
The first two were painful to read.

want to but my fricken CBS was sold out. Guess thats a good sign.

Better outcome in #3, but overall I'm missing a lot of the nuances they've been cutting out.

true but theres 3 issues left and it looks like its gonna be a different direction in all of those - lus who is in the mystery tube? issue 3 is actually worth checking out imo guys

Yep, it's starting to get more interesting because it doesn't follow the original story.
I don't want to spoil anything, but the end of issue 3 and what Ben does took me by surprise.
Can't wait to see how this saga ends.

I was dissappointed he used the original Spider-man costume. Also, the dramatic turn of events for May and MJ makes me wonder what the hell they are going to do with this.

I was disappointed with the use of the original Spider-Man costume as well, but I think thats just because its the one Peter handed him. I bet next issue he will be wearing the Spider-Ben costume. And since the master villain has been revealed, the rest of the series will just be the playing out of this master villain's plan. It seems like at every turn he predicted the way the Peter and Ben would react, so I am super interested in what his final outcome is. Who could be in the yellow clone pod? I think everything is set up for this series to end up great. Plus, taking the focus away from who is actually the clone and who is the original is great. It fits Peter's character so much better. Really, when you look at their situations, it doesn't matter at all who is the clone and who isn't.

Could someone tell me what happened in spoiler boxes? I can't afford, nor really want, to pick this mini up anymore, and even if I could it wouldn't be for a few months.

You really should get the book, #3 is really good. The pace is better, the story has surprising elements and Ben Reilly needs a good selling book.

It doesn't have the same impact if you just read a summary. :csad:

I know Mackie is trying to fit years of continuity into 6 books, but I found Peter's "whatever" response to the fact that he may be the clone really lame.

Can't unfortunately. I just had to drop 7 or 8 titles I already love just to afford the rest. I can't afford to add anything else... which is why I was asking. I may not be reading it, but I'm curious about the differances from the original series.

just get it off the net thats what I have been doing as there are no comic shops where i am cureently - I am gonna pick them up when I go home for xmas and the trade when its out

I read issue 3 and am still not impressed by this mini.

This. ^

My support of Ben Reilly does not supersede my support of quality writing. And this definitely is not. #3 will be the last issue I buy of this mini.

Also to your earlier point. Kaine is NOT an exact copy of Peter like Ben was. He has the same basic genetic code, but he was twisted and abused by Jackal early in his life and never given Peter's RNA code which had Peter's memories and ethics.
I thought this too (and I think it would have made more sense) but when I spoke to Howard Mackie for the interview (though this was left out of the published version) he denied it. Personally, I have a hard time believing anyone with Peter Parker's upbringing could become a murderer, but that's Mackie's position on it, and he did co-create the character.

I was always under the impression that Kaine had Peter's memories, but his past did not affect his character at all compared to his present. Despite remembering growing up in a loving household and such, the abuse he received from his 'father' and the rejection he faced from being deformed dominated from then on. Its like when people discover religion or something. The rest of their life may be completely changed from that point on. I think thats the way it happened in Kaine's case, in a more negative way. Despite remembering his upbringing, from that point on, he was forever changed.

Plus, there is always the possibility that his mind was unstable like the rest of his genetic structure. These instabilities may have been the breeding grounds for insanity, especially since his mind was being forced to accept supplanted memories. Proof that he has Peter's memories is supported by the creation of his costume. When he recalls creating it, he recalls his knowledge and affinity of science that he received from Peter.

And there you have it, Spider-Ben costume :woot:

Amazing. I'm 100% happier with this series and all they did was have the Spider-Ben costume:)

I've just never really cared about the Spider-Ben costume. I was more in love with the Scarlet Spider myself.

Both great costumes in my imo. The spider-ben suit on the cover of amazing #407 got me back into collecting, amazing art by Bagley on that run. I own a pretty respectable Scarlet Spider suit though I can't post pics on the hype for some reason, but Spidey4fun has them posted on the Spidey suits and suit creation thread.

Anything Amazing Spider-Man drawn by Bagley is aces for me. He was the artist when I started collecting. In fact, my first issue of the title (and 2nd comic ever) was 351, the first issue of his ongoing stint. And I trailed off of Spider-Man for a while midway through the Clone Saga and he was still on it... so for me, he's really the definitive Spidey artist.
