Official "Get Smart" movie thread (starring Steve Carell)

I think this is a "remake" that has potential for the basic fact that Carell can simply replicate the tone of the tv series and, given the right story, still come out with a great movie. It doesn't have to be either an "homage" in either of the 2 directions these things tend to take and too often take badly (either "dark" BS or pseudo-spoof comedic mediocrity).

Unlike "Dukes of Hazzard" or "Bewitched" it was actually a great television series, and Nicole Kidman while obviously a talented dramatic actress is just as comedically ******ed as Jessica Simpson.

Carrell is clearly a great casting choice. Anybody got a good suggestion for 99?

Many of those pictures show a strong resemblance with Charlize Theron, but she's probably too expensive in addition to giving me the impression of being just as unfunny or even incapable of being used for comedy as Nicole Kidman.

She was awesome in Arrested Development.
And Carrell is a great choice. Some of the best casting I've heard about in a long time.

well i guess to must people you could have sucked but since you where still on it they where awesome.

100 bucks they cast someone as agent 99 that pisses everyone off.

So when is the shooting taking place? and will this be a 2007 or 2008 release date?

Steve Carrell won't be available for filming it until spring 2007. He's doing "Dan in Real Life" real quick in the fall then he has to do another (I assume short) season of "the Office", at which time he'll have picked which of the few movies he's attatched to to do next. Although of them "Get Smart" seems to have the most steam at this point, atleast it has a director and everything.

so i'm guessing not for awhile. Probably a 2008 release date. Plus he has Evan Almighty to promote next summer.This sorta has the same problems as the I dream of Jeannie movie except they have someone to star in it where i dream of jeannie is still Jeannieless.

I think Carell is a great choice...and I've heard that this movie has been in talks with him for years...even before 40yr old Virgin and Evan Almighty...around the time when he played Uncle Arthur in the Bewithched remake...so...good for him...I hope it happens and I hope its directed by Jay Roach.

Well some people did. but i think it might be like bewitched if it doesn't cast the best Jeannie. Plus it's chick show.

Zooey Deschanel (sp?) would make a pretty good 99...as would the aforementioned Charlize Theron, who was funny as hell in Arrested Development.
