Comics Official NEW EXILES Discussion Thread

damn gwen is destined to die everywhere but in the movies

I got bored of Claremont's arc and haven't gotten around to finishing it. I hope to get to it soon, but I will say that I actualy really like Spiderman 2099 on the team. While I like Longshot, I wouldn't mind seeing him go (though I'd really like him to go to the 616 again and become a real character like he used to be). Blink and Morph are to stay, and though I like Sabretooth and it'd be sad to see him go, someone better could take his place. And Psylocke is fine... I doubt there's any chance of her leaving the team anyhow.

And I really like that Spidey/Gwen cover. That's cool

The quasi-good Sabretooth can go to the 616...there just so happens to be an opening there...I actually would like to see this book ended...in its current capacity...and have Blink, Morph, Longshot, Spiderman 2099 and Sabretooth all come to live for good in the 616

I would love that. Sabretooth in 616 would be interesting in a Beast/Dark Beast sort of way, but I honestly don't see it working for long. Morph would be great in 616, but he's got to get over that Proteus thing first and trully be Morph.

I like Exiles, but I'm starting to wonder if the book is just running it's coarse. It seems like I just haven't been as interested in it since around the time that the crystal palace was found (the arc with Hyperion). The World Tour was a neat idea, but it got old after a while. The stuff after that was decent, but nothing phenominal. Claremont's stuff is about the same. I think I've just gotten bored with the title. Not the characters, just the comic. If they ended it now and brought the characters to the 616 to take part in other comics (or just have the Exiles comic continue on as a 616 title, them being exiles of their worlds stranded in the 616) I'd be extatic.

Claremont's stuff is nowhere near as bad as Tony Bedard's stuff was.

Not that Bedard was a bad writer. I don't remember his earlier stuff being bad. I think they kept him on this title way too long, and he got bored with it.

For Claremont, Exiles is new ground. And for the readers, it's a breath of fresh air instead of the stagnation given by Bedard. We haven't seen Claremont on "new material" in awhile, but instead the same recycled crap in Uncanny and New Excalibur, and it hasn't been that bad. I'll admit, his first arc got a little boring in a few spots, but all in all it felt, at least to me, like a throwback to the original Exiles stuff by Winick. And that isn't bad.

Yeah, Exiles went bad around the time Bedard started doing the Crystal Palace and World Tour crap. Him tying into events - like AoA RebirthCRAP and House of M - didn't help matters either. I mean, c'mon - add Holocaust just so we can have him get killed, and while we're at it, let's kill Mimic too? Die a slow death in fire, Bedard. :o

And while I haven't fully read this new issue of Exiles, from the quick skim I gave it, it looks like Claremont might be getting rid of the whole Crystal Palace crap. Which is, like, a million thumbs up.

I've read 95, I know I have... but I kinda forgot about happened in it... this is a sign isn't it?

Outcry, Gwen hadn't died in earth 1298, also known as Mutant X world :D and I bet she's going to die in Spidey 4 :p

Well, I just read 95. It was slow, admittedly, but it was one of those downtime issues, and... wait, have we had a single downtime issue in the last, what, 30 issues?

I think there was an art error in one of the first pages, where one panel shows Sabes talking to Betsy (who calls him Mr. Creed) and in the next panel he's talking to Clarice, but it's the same angle. The picture of Betsy probably should have been Clarice, heh.

Otherwise, well. Claremont needs to find the characters' voices. Yeah, yeah, he knows Psylocke's voice. He's actually got a great voice for Sabretooth, too, and that's much appreciated, since Bedard never wrote the AoA Sabretooth properly. Claremont's Sabretooth is really very close to how he was written way back in the mini and one-shots. I'm unsure how I feel about Morph, but I think Claremont might be disregarding what Bedard did regarding Morph/Proteus, somewhat akin to how Marv Wolfman has pretty much disregarded Bruce Jones's run on Nightwing OYL. :D Spider-Man and Longshot I don't give a whole much of a crap about. That leaves Blink, and... Wow. Claremont, the only way you could make her sound like more of a Storm-Psylocke hybrid in this issue is to have her start ranting about Africa and weather. He definitely needs to find a voice for Blink.

Oh, and:
He's kept the Crystal Palace, but Heather and the stupid bugs are out of the equation now. This is much appreciated, and really, it's not bad to have a base of operations.

Issue #95 sucked horribly, sorry. Sabretooth giving Psylocke a backrub?

SABRETOOTH giving Psylocke a backrub?

Give me a friggin' break.

Earth 295 Sabretooth... which we all know is just a pussycat

Yeah, doesn't change a thing about the fact that the Sabes that Betsy knows is a ruthless bastard that eviscerated her. I can understand her starting to trust him a bit after 6 months, but a backrub? No.

Betsy is one of the horniest X-Women ever. A hunk of a guy says he wants to give her a "bcakrub" she'd jump at him, especially after six months of abstinence

Psylocke is a female character. It's Claremont writing her.

'Nuff said? >.>

Next issue: The aftermath of the backrub. Scene opens with Psylocke laying on her stomach with a milky white substance covering her entire body....Sabretooth laying passed out with a smile across the room....what transpired between the two????

'Nuff said? >.>

For all intents and purposes... You've got it. Psylocke was moved to Exiles strictly for Claremont, so we know he's going to turn her into the ultimate alpha female. Within a few issues he'll pry try to kill off Blink so he can promote her...

What gives me a little faith is that, even if he's using Betsy to narrate the books, he really hasn't pushed her - THUS FAR - into the shining role. She doesn't have the spotlight specifically on her.

She is the viewpoint character, so yes, she has more stage time, but not at the cost of everyone else's time. And as I've said, with the exception of Blink in this past issue, he's got the other characters' voices.

Now, I point this out with a bit of surprise, because I'm actually confident that it's Claremont writing these issues and not one of his random behind-the-scenes ghost writers. :D

As for her being friendly with Sabretooth and this being a supposed problem, well, whatever. It's pretty obvious this isn't the same Sabretooth who tried to kill her, as he's mostly well-adjusted, his teammates are well-adjusted, vouch for him, and even past that it was explained to Psylocke. I've never read a TON of Psylocke, but I don't think she's ever been written as stupid - why would she react to AoA-Sabes the same way, say, 616-Wolverine would?

Exiles #96 will arrive in stores on July 11 from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by Chris Claremont, with art by Clayton Henry and a cover by Tomm Coker.

Here's how Marvel describes the issue:

"The team may have finally found the perfect world: An Earth with no crime, hate or fear -- ruled by one the most diabolical villains of the Marvel universe: Victor Von Doom! Is this some twisted façade or have the Exiles finally stumbled on to utopia? Find out in 'The Dream of Two Good Men.'"

Exiles #96 will be 32 pages and will cost $2.99.

#96 was a pretty meh issue. Art was decent (except for the huge foreheads and Psylocke's blue hair (why can't the colorist get it right?!)) but the story was bad as it is since Claremont took over the writing.

BTW, for those who have read it, does anybody know who is the girl in the last page with Psylocke??

I didn't think the hair color was blue so much as a deeper purple/violet... which is more or less right.

The story was a bit slow, but I wouldn't say it's -bad-. His first arc was actually pretty decent, especially after the whole Tony Bedard crap that I've been dealing with for way too long. This arc, though, seems a bit of a step down from it, and it doesn't help that he keeps writing Blink wrong. I won't drop the book during this arc, but I might not keep on after it.

And no, no idea who the other girl is. I hope it's not supposed to be a sex-change Longshot.

Well, if the future solicits are anything to go by, the other girl should be an alternate reality version of Kitty Pryde.

Well, in the preview it really looks dark purple (the right color) but in my issue it looked really blue. I just scanned one panel of it. Maybe it was just my issue, I don't know

I guess I'm just tired of the same alternate Fantastic Four teams with Victor instead of Reed as the leader, well, maybe I'm just tired of alternate Fantastic Four teams. I think two consecutive arcs dealing with them are too many, given Claremont has an entire Marvel Universe to play with.

I won't drop the book during this arc, but I might not keep on after it
I won't drop the book either because I really like the "What if" premise, but I hope Claremont comes up with something good, he's ruining two of my favorite x-books, even though the latest New Excalibur isn't that bad.

That's right, thanks :)
