Official Shang-Chi Casting Thread!!!

Will Yun Lee would be my choice for the role.

He's a great choice.

What do you guys think?

Shang-Chi was as much a thinker as he is a bruiser and frankly this guy doesn't look that deep. Neither do any of the pretty boys suggested here. The only one I can see that has been suggested is Jason Scott Lee. The guy was an actor and not really a martial artist but he pulled it off well in the Bruce Lee story.

Jason Scott gets my vote.

so, um-- would people expect Jaa to learn English for the film, or be happy with subtitles?

and who should write-- and who should direct?

I'm not sold on Jaa being able to learn enough English. :O

- Cast either Shin Koyamada, Rick Yune or Brian Tee as Shang-Chi
- Hire Florent Emilio Siri as the director. He's one of the best upcoming action directors.
- Get David Hayter and Ethan Reiff/Cyrus Voris to write your story.
- Use Woo-ping Yuen as action choreographer

I agree with whoever suggested this guy...looks just like shang chi, and speaks fluent english too!

No one is going to see this movie if it actually comes out so this thread should be closed.

I heard him 3 years ago in an interview speak some english fine. I imagine now he knows quite a bit more. It never stopped Arnold.

which is precisely why u clicked on this thread in the first place huh? thanx for the info mr. psychic can i know my future while ur at it?

Though I normally would automatically choose Dacascos, I think Jason Scott Lee would be perfect for Shang-Chi. He just fits the bill IMO.

hmm... one stumblling block- the Sax Rohmer estate owns the Fu Manchu name-- Marvel would have to license it, unless they chose to give him another name. In Black Panther #11, he has now taken the name 'Mr. Han'.
marvel gets around that by not mentioning his name

that's it, I'm sure Beet's life would be much better without being on the Stern show.

ANYONE'S life would be better from having disassociated with that guy! That's sad when to have a "better life", someone has to be subjected to ridicule. Perhaps one of your future children will be allowed to be displayed on the Stern show. You'd be so proud.

As for the subject of this thread, Jaa looks identical to the comic rendering of the character. He is in a recently released (over here, anyway) movie called The Protector, I think. Looks pretty cool.

You and 10 other people. Come on you guys. If the FF4 failed here at home (only made 330 million because of the over seas numbers) and the Hulk and DD were killed by critics. What makes you think Shang Chi could even have a decent box office. They are wasting time and money on a character hardly any fan really knows about. Draws no SERIOUS interest what so ever.

Which is probably why u might get a big name like Tony Jaa to play him, really Shang-Chi is similar to characters that a lot of martial artists have portrayed in their movies.

Well, you're making this assumption on the basis of him being a relative unknown character. But as I said above, Jaa just released a movie about a character that no one knows ANYTHING about. he's just playing some character written for the screen. I just know the previews have him doing some absolutely amazing things onscreen. My point is that if people will go see him in a movie about an unknown character, they'd go see him as Shang-chi. Shang-chi would not be a movie that would require anywhere near a $100 million budget so it would probably profit if marketed properly. Then if it was a good movie, hopefully word-of-mouth would push profits a bit higher.

Exactly...This could be like Tony Jaa's version of Black Mask.

and thats a good thing:ninja:

It should go straight to DVD. Won't even come near being a blockbuster. What is the point of making a film if it isn't going to make some real money.

I see Tony Jaa as Shang-Chii. i saw the Protector and really the guy has the skills to pull off all sorts of martial arts movies. Thing is, we all know he doesn't speak english. Though I'm sure it's not that hard for him to learn.

Great thread.

I wonder if they could get Jay Chou? I mean, they got Charlie coc and he's about as well known plus you want a decent star if he's going to have his own series

Harry Shum Jr has the charisma to pull off Shang-Chi. Remember that Shang-Chi is a former spy, so the acting as well as the physicality should be there.

Regarding Shang Chi, he will likely appear in a Netflix series rather then being in a movie.

Regarding Fu Manchu, I don't think Marvel has the rights to that character anymore and frankly the character has always been a racial sterotype. I think the comics ret conned his dad to be Yellow Claw instead and Yellow Claw is one of the most offensive characters Marvel has created that managed to appear past the 1960s. I think Shang Chi's father will be hard to do in the 21st century.
