Saying Gimli wanted to boink Galadriel is disingenuine to what really happened. I think a better real-world analogy would be a guy who hates Asians, but meets an Asian woman whose grace and beauty makes him challange his own prejudice.

Well, yes it would. I allowed my words to be twisted. I'm an easy going kind of cat.

Oh dear, I should have seen this coming... With The Last Airbender having came and went, the internet group "Racebending" is now setting their sites elsewhere in an attempt to remain relevant. They are now calling The Hobbit shameful and racist because a dark skinned woman was turned down for a hobbit role. After all, it couldn't possibly have anything to do with the fact that all of the hobbits from the previous 3 movies were caucasian, and a random brown hobbit would seem rather out of place. :whatever:

Don't mind them because they're irrelevant. They cannot make everything into a witch hunt. Seriously. They should use their heads.
Honestly, I can see them saying "There were only white people in Star Wars (A New Hope). George Lucas is a racist!". Insane stuff like that, where
logic is being thrown out of the window.

This is coming from an Asian-American.

and who the heck uses LiveJournal anymore? IT's all about tumblr!

OMG :pal::pal::pal:

A little late but I can't believe that this project is actually got green light. I hope Peter Jackson keeps Guillermo del Toro's designs at least Smaug which sounded pretty cool.

Great casting news so far except for one thing, how in the hell did Mikael Persbrandt get a role in this?
He is seriously a bad actor, every character he has played has been one-sided.

Happy Holidays from Weta Workshop:

You know, for a stylized cartoon, that Smaug is pretty damn cool. I wonder if it's a hint at the actual design for the film.

Warner Bros. to Distribute Hobbit Worldwide

LOS ANGELES, CA, January 6, 2011- Roger Birnbaum and Gary Barber, MGM Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers, Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Operating Officer, New Line Cinema and Alan Horn, President and Chief Operating Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that MGM and Warner Bros have concluded a deal for Warner Bros. Pictures to handle international theatrical and video distribution responsibilities on MGM’s behalf for Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit”. This arrangement results in Warner Bros. Pictures handling the bulk of worldwide distribution, while MGM will handle international television licensing for the films. MGM and WB will work collaboratively to coordinate marketing and release plans worldwide.

Jackson, who directed all three “The Lord of the Rings” films, will helm the two films back-to-back, telling the story of “The Hobbit” from screenplays written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro.

The two “Hobbit” films are set to begin production in February 2011, with release dates targeted for December 2012 and December 2013. Jackson will utilize groundbreaking visual effects and his incomparable storytelling to bring Tolkien’s novel to the big screen. Both “Hobbit” movies will be filmed in Digital 3-D, using the latest camera and stereo technology to create a high quality, comfortable viewing experience.

Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham are producing the films for New Line, Warner Bros and MGM, with co-writer Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer and Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner as executive producers. The Oscar-winning, critically acclaimed “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, also from the production team of Jackson, Walsh and Cunningham, grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide at the box office. In 2003, “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” swept the Academy Awards, winning all of the 11 categories in which it was nominated, including Best Picture – the first ever Best Picture win for a fantasy film. The trilogy’s production was also unprecedented at the time.

So when the **** are they confirming McKellen's return?

and still no casting news? I guess this is better than nothing.

Don't worry, Doctor Jones. I've got your back:

UPDATE: I've learned that Warner Bros will, in fact, pay the entire cost of the two installments of The Hobbit, a price-tag that is expected to exceed $500 million. Now, the question will be which cast members from The Lord of the Rings come back for encores. I've heard talk of conversations with Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis and possibly Elijah Wood. I'd heard Orlando Bloom was also in talks before the holidays. Returning actors will need to be locked in shortly.
I really think, of all else, Elijah Wood's role would be minimal and would be only a cameo. I'm assuming he's in Hobbiton already, much younger of course. But I don't know how Hobbits age, so I don't if they need to alter Elijah's looks to make him look even younger than the way he looked in Lord of the Rings.

BUT I think the best approach is to not show Elijah until the very, very end to cap off the movie in Part 2. As a nod to the fans.

The Hobbit takes place sixty years before The Lord of the Rings.

Frodo isn't even born yet.

I'm not a huge fan of the series but I'm looking forward the movie(s) I must say, got me wanting to see the LOTR movies now, it's been quite awhile.

Interesting. Well nevermind then! It's possible it's a lot of hearsay right now.

I'm shocked that Hugo Weaving hasn't been mentioned yet, though for sure he'll be back.

Excellent news, I can't wait to see set pictures flowing in. More so I can't wait for a trailer.

I guess the ending could do a "Flash Forward" with text saying 60 years or so later setting up The Lord Of The Rings

I wouldn't mind seeing the end flash forwarding and Bilbo as an older man with the ring who hasn't aged. I don't think it should go into Fellowship that much, but if we see Bilbo put it in his pocket or something or sit down to write "There And Back Again" that would be fine with me.

That's a good idea, actually. It would probably be like a 20 second cameo, but I think it can be done tastefuly.

But then what are going to do, get Ian Holm to come back too?

If anything he could maybe be seen by Galadriel in her mirror briefly...even then I say leave Frodo out of the hobbit.

Oy, I like that idea even less. :csad:

God I hope they keep away from trying to recreate anything they have already shown but with Martin instead of Ian, the scene in Gollums cave where he actually picks up the ring is already gonna be awkward...sorry I just hate recasting even though I know Martins gonna be great.

You have got to be ****ing kidding me .

Elijah Wood will be in The Hobbit

Deadline hinted first but TheOneRing.net can confirm that Elijah Wood will step in front of Peter Jackson’s cameras and return to Middle-earth for a part in ‘The Hobbit,’ — and we even know how. Despite how some fans will respond at first, the reasons are organic and natural and shouldn’t upset even the most ardent purists.
***MAJOR HOBBIT MOVIE SPOILERS AFTER THE BREAK***

As readers of “The Hobbit” know, the tale of “The Downfall of The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit or There and Back Again,” are contained in the fictional “Red Book of Westmarch.” In Peter Jackson’s LOTR films, the books are shown on screen and written in by Bilbo and Frodo and handed off to Sam Gamgee. (Not explained on film are Sam’s progeny later having the book and being Wardens of the Westmarch — hence the book’s title.)

The fictional book, and either the telling from or the reading of, will establish Frodo in the films, leaving viewers to experience the tale of ‘The Hobbit’ through Bilbo’s point of view.

Since the speculation is now everywhere around the interwebs, TORn can confirm that as of now, the plans are to feature Frodo in the opening sequence of the films. It is unlikely that studio Warner Bros. or Team Jackson would change the script at this point in response to the web buzz so we may have just “spoiled” December 2012 for some, but we warned you. (And, sat on the spoiler until leaks started to appear!)

Rumors have suggested Wood is “in talks” to appear in the film but that isn’t an issue as it very likely the role was discussed with the actor at the scripting phase of the films and he was agreeable to reprise his part then. It is likely but less certain that the same can be said of Orlando Bloom who is rumored (and TORn cannot currently lock-down confirm) to be playing his LOTR Elf character Legolas.

The status of other actors’ whose characters would have been living during the plot line of the Hobbit, are varied. Cate Blanchett is confirmed as Galadriel while Hugo Weaving’s Elrond is a prominently featured character in the source material but not confirmed. Liv Tyler’s Arwen could logically be present as could other ancient Elves like Marton Csokas’ Celeborn.

Frodo’s return makes it possible that Sean Astin could appear as Sam and other Hobbits such as Merry or Pippin can not be ruled out. TORn’s information indicates however, that Frodo and the young Bilbo are the primary Hobbit connections between the film series.

Dwarves will play a prominent role of course in the new films, and LOTR character Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) is the son Gloin, one of one of Bilbo’s companions for the journey of the titular Hobbit. Readers can view our Hobbit cast page to see the status and information on all known characters from the film.

Two very obvious absences from any press releases so far are signings of Ian McKellan as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum. Both actors are believed to be in negotiations and the studio and actors have elected not to conduct talks through the press. Fans including those on TheOneRing.net message boards, are worried about the actors’ signings. As always, hit us with news at [email protected] or hit up the author.
