Speaking of Ian Holm, I watched The Sweet Hereafter the other day. Anyone see that? Man, he was great in that movie. So was Bruce Greenwood (Captain Pike).

ill have to check it out.

Yeah, definitely worth seeing. It's pretty depressing, but really good.

Does anyone know if Howard Shore is coming back? im listening to his score now and it definitely was a main contributor to all the films. Some great stuff. I hope the little disagreement with King Kong wont affect him.

theres a lot of interesting choices of who could play bilbo. Im still sticking with James Mcvoy though. He proved in atonement and even in Wanted that he can hold his own film. He can defiintly be a likable and heroic character which is what exactly bilbo is.

It was confirmed that Howard Shore would be coming back for The Hobbit films. I cannot imagine anyone else doing the music for Middle-Earth. The Lord of the Rings score is my favourite soundtrack.

thats reassuring news. Yeah i totally agree like even the slower stuff is amazing and not just the battle sequence music. I also love how he themed each race/land (gondor, rohan, rivendell, moria, mordor) so good.

The Fellowship theme is probably my favourite piece of music. It's so heroic and powerful at times, such as when the Fellowship leave Rivendell, but it can also be very soft and moving, such as when Frodo is on the river bank at Amon Hen and when the Fellowship is reunited in Return of the King.

agreed. I also love the bridge of Kazadum piece when Gandalf falls. So emotional and it worked so well in the film. It really made you think you just lost someone so important. My favorite piece of music though has to go to Gondors theme when Gandalf and Pippin are riding up Minas Tirith. Its an amazing sequence.

According to an interview (link) Guillermo said he could be announcing the casting of Bilbo in a matter of weeks

Casting. Plots. All things 'The Hobbit' can be discussed in the 'Official Hobbit Thread'.

Merging.

Same here. I don't think I've ever watched that scene and not gotten chills up my spine by how epic it all is.

Other favorites... I'll simply list parts of the movies because I don't know the all the names of the themes:

The theme at the end of Fellowship (on the album it features "In Dreams")
Lighting the beacons of Gondor
The fall of Sauron
The Grey Havens
The Rohirrim charge (in Two Towers and Return of the King)
Shortcut to Mushrooms theme from Fellowship, as well as all of the Shire themes

i also really enjoy gollums theme at the end of two towers. We can keep listing this great score but basically Howard Shore nailed it out of the park.

Personally, one of my favorites was the theme for Rohan. I think it was called The King Of The Golden Hall. I just thought it was beautiful.

Yeah, pretty much everything was perfect. I could listen to those themes forever.

Rohan and Isengard are my favorite "place" themes

Think I might go for an "Extended LOTR" marathon this weekend

good luck, i've done it twice. My advice is gather a good group of friends and invest in cases of mountain dew.

The already epic story is far more epic straight through

I tried that once, too, but I got through a whole magnum of Chasse-Spleen by the end of the extended FOTR, and I fell sound asleep to the dulcet tones of Treebeard.

ive only done it once, its a journey on itself.

Man, slap some make up on Ian Holm and keep him as Bilbo.
I agree. Can't go wrong with the original.
^Not a chance. He's like in his 80's by now.
I don't see why that's a problem. Just look at all the tricks they used for all the hobbits (including Bilbo himself) in the LOTR films. Obviously, there was some stuff that the younger actors could actually do themselves that Sir Ian wouldn't be able to do at his age, but again, there are tricks to get around that. Sure, it would be a lot cheaper to hire a younger actor for that very reason, but I think some extra stunt work and CGI would be worth it for more continuity between the movies.

The only reason I wouldn't want them using Ian Holm is if Ian himself didn't feel up to it. I'm also really hoping that they can film some Saruman scenes in Britain, since it sounds like the only thing holding Christopher Lee back from reprising his role is not wanting to travel to NZ.
