I am not worried about this anymore. EVENTUALLY we are going to get this film(s). I could care less about using the same actors. Everyone is old. Elves don't age. Unless they want to CGI everyone, they are probably going to have to recast everyone. I like franchises that take that 15-20 year haitus. Even though we ended up with crap more often than not, it is important to introduce the series to the next generation, rather than cling on to the original fanbase.

Spyglass Emerges as Lead Candidate to Run MGM

BY MIKE SPECTOR AND LAUREN A.E. SCHUKER

Spyglass Entertainment has emerged as the leading contender to run Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., said people familiar with the matter, as the beleaguered film studio races to restructure a roughly $4 billion debt load this summer.

Spyglass co-heads Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum would run the studio as co-chief executives under a plan being discussed with MGM's creditors, these people said.

The talks are continuing, and no final decisions have been made, the people said. Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the "Twilight" vampire-film franchise, also has been in discussions with MGM and its creditors, and remains a candidate to run the company.

It is official. PJ is doing both films. It all comes full circle, but I suspect he wanted to direct them anyways.

Peter Jackson to Direct The Hobbit Films!

Source: Deadline, Heat Vision
June 25, 2010

On May 30th, director Guillermo del Toro made the surprising announcement that he would no longer be directing The Hobbit and its follow-up. At the time, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy director Peter Jackson said:

Guillermo is co-writing the Hobbit screenplays with Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh and myself, and happily our writing partnership will continue for several more months, until the scripts are fine tuned and polished. New Line and Warner Bros will sit down with us this week, to ensure a smooth and uneventful transition, as we secure a new director for the Hobbit. We do not anticipate any delay or disruption to ongoing pre-production work.

Our guess is that meeting went rather well, as Jackson is now taking over the director's chair for both films, in addition to executive producing and co-writing! His deal is being negotiated right now with New Line/Warner Bros. and MGM. Jackson will have to extricate himself from other project obligations, but it looks like this is going ahead.

This is huge. I didn't know if he would do it or not for sure. I should be bouncing off the walls, but I'm kind of concerned. He hired Del Toro because he didn't want to direct these films. So I'm afraid whether or not he'll show the same passion he had for the Lord of the Rings films. And not just something for obligational purposes. Anyone else feel this way?

''We do not anticipate any delay''

hahahahahahahhahahhahahahahhah:lmao:

The thing, what makes New Line and Warner Brothers so confident that having Peter Jackson on to direct The Hobbit will ensure MGM will cooperate? MGM doesn't have a dime to their name right now, as far as I can see.

I agree a little with Doctor Jones. But I'm sure Peter still has passion for it, if he didn't he wouldn't have been involved at all once GDT became involved.

I'M WITH YOU.

Because I too should be super excited. Instead, I'm weary because I'm getting a "Fine..FINE..I'll do it!" vibe from Jackson. For justifiable reasons on his part but still, it's not about passion but like what you said 'obligatory purpose"

I remember Jackson making a comment about how watching GDT work on these films made him wish he was directing them himself. Can't remember where I read that, but I know for a fact that I did. Granted, he could just be saying that, but considering how much he's been involved in the project as is (scripting, designing, etc), I'd say he has plenty of interest and passion in the project.

Besides, that article kinda jumped the gun. Jackson is in negotiations. He's not officially signed on yet. It really could go either way, especially if Jackson cannot get out of his other contracts/obligations.

yeah but this is just talk.

you watch a guy in the gym how he works out. you get the motivation to also work out. go work out for 1 hour at fully energy in the gym. go doing this for the whole year.

the same with movies like LOTR and Hobbit. this will be more then 2 years of hes life. maybe it will be good working on them for 6 months, what then? what if he loses the motivation?

this is not good for PJ. forward movement. this is not forward movement.

he thinks that he owes something to MGM or WB. he thinks that because they spend so much money and time that the movie needs ot be finished.

wrong. the movie from the studio side was for money. not because they want those characters ad story.

PJ you dont need to do them this favour. your LOTR trilogy made enough money to all of them.

AS MUCH AS i disagree with Devin Faraci from chud.com, he made a comment that i don't wholly agree with, but there might be some TRUTH in there. some where.

I suspect Jackson is fundamentally broken as a filmmaker.

Excellent news! If you've listen/read him talk about The Hobbit, you can easily see how much he has enjoyed returning to Middle-Earth and I definitely don't think he is doing it merely because he feels obligated. And like Boom said, he had even expressed a sense of sadness a few times during the last year or two about not being able to direct these films. You can try to read into how he feels from news articles and press releases all you want, but everything I've seen from him in interviews and such make it clear to me he is passionate about this.

Now we just need MGM's problems to be solved and we're good to go.

I'm sure McKellen is ecstatic, at least.

fanboy denial

If that's how you feel, then that's cool. I just merely posted what I think. Point me towards actual evidence that he's "lost the passion" and I'll change my mind in an instant. I just haven't seen much like that.

I just hope Jackson doesn't do massive script rewrites during production like he did with LoTR. I want GDT's work to remain in tact.

If Jackson had a passion for The Hobbit early on, then he would have taken the directorial reign from the get-go.

Maybe Jackson will do that third film they were originally going to do that connected these movies with LOTR more closely

Yup, and I think there is some truth to Devin's comment.

I remember Jackson saying on the Special features on the LOTR DVD's that he would never do another big movie again. He didicated eight years. Then he made King Kong, another film with nothing small in it. Lovely Bones was his smallest, but I thought he would be doing smaller films like that from now on.

He will have to dedicate his life for God knows how long now for these films.

By the time these films are over, Jackson will look older than his age.

We'll see. at the same time, Jackson is also a business man and he does love the property.

I'm not gonna harp on the disappointments that the certain directors made by going back to the franchises that helped made them famous (couch...Speilberg..Lucas) but we'll see what happens.

Jackson KNEW it was coming, even before Del toro left.

I'm sure Del Toro's departure was in the makings for a while (maybe as early as Jan) and he had talks with Jackson about it for a long time. I'm guess but with a partnership like that, that conversation was bound to happen at one point before it became public.

And I just think that Jackson probably had a good time thinking about it before May.
