Yep, I meant Sauron. That's the problem with LOTR- it's easy to tangle your Balins and Berens!

I see Dol Guldur being more like an evil version of the Mirkwood Elves' kingdom under the hill. It was meant to be disguised, after all. That isn't to say that it shouldn't have a superstructure; I can imagine a broken and overgrown ring of towers, thrusting out of the hill like fangs. But it shouldn't be as massive as Baradur, and I don't think the surroundings should be as bleak as Mordor. It should seem more "recently corrupted", with evil looking trees, fungi and swamps.

Anyone think Gary Oldman should be in this? Beside the fact he should be in everything, who could he play? I was thinking Bard.

Honestly, I can see him in just about any role. A dwarf, the goblin king, voice of Smaug/an Eagle/Necromancer, Radagast, and hell, I could even see him as Bilbo! And for those interested, I found this amusing image over at TheOneRing:

Well, according to this article, Martin Freeman was offered the role of Bilbo, but reluctantly turned it down.

However, seeing as it comes from The Sun, I would take this with about 2 tons of salt.

Yeah... it's probably false. He would be a good Bilbo though.

And now TheOneRing.Net is reporting that he was the number one choice.

The casting won't get announced until Jackson says he's OFFICIALLY on board.

It is a shame if Freeman did turn down the role. He's the actor that has always, for the last few years, popped into my head when I think of Bilbo. Hard to think of any other actor with quite the same plain-and-honest look to him.

Oh man, Freeman as Bilbo would be a dream come true!

I think Martin is perfect for the part. He looks like Ian Holm, can act, and has a Hobbitish physique.

I hope he gets the part. He is a good dramatic and comic actor, and I think Bilbo needs both.

Just to keep the ball rolling-

David Morrissey for Beorn!
Michael Fassbender for Bard!
Kevin McKidd for Thorin Oakenshield!
Simon Pegg as Balin!
Timothy Dalton as the King of the Mirkwood Elves!
Jeremy Irons as the voice of Smaug!

As long as Freeman has a little time to film Sherlock series 2, I'll be happy :)

This is great. I never thought this would actually happen. I won't get my hopes up too much, but this is still good news. If he does do Sherlock then it's a win win.

I'm curious how they plan on working around the Sherlock schedule, considering principal photography for The Hobbit is 14 months, and Bilbo is most likely in 95% of the film.

Anyway, I hope they work something out.

My understanding about Sherlock was that it would be a similar format to the first series and not a whole season (the way Doctor Who is). That may provide some more flexibility.

Freeman needs to just break down and do this ******** already. They're pissing me off with all this back and forth.

Nothing he can really do about it, though, unless of course he doesn't mind being sued. He has a contract for Sherlock.

^No way we're seeing this before 2013 then.

January here we come! I sure hope production goes well. The first LOTR FOTR was the greatest movie experience I had ever had in my life. Knew pretty much nothing of the books, and was completely changed into a fantasy nerd in just over three hours.

Assuming Peter jackson Is directing and filming does beguin In January film 1 could be out
In December 2012 the 10th annivary of the release of the Two Towers.
