Why doesn't Jackson direct them himself? He doesn't have any other projects lined up.
And besides, he kinda needs something to boost his resume after King Kong and The Lovely Bones...

Wow, this is just terrible news. Like some have said, this was the guy I envisioned making these movies. And we had him and now we lost him. But I definitely understand where Del Toro is coming from. At least we get to see more films from him rather than have him just sitting around and waiting.

Man this is such a bummer. I'm not even looking forward to seeing this getting made now. Del Toro was the best choice and they lost him. I mean if Jackson steps up i'll be down but still, I am sad that well never see Del Toro's Hobbit

"Peter has and has had obligations and commitments to other films that would make it impossible for him to direct The Hobbit at this time, even if it was offered, which it hasn't been," Kamins told me. "I've been quietly working on setting up a film for him to direct while Guillermo would have been directing The Hobbit. What you saw in their respective statements must be taken at face value. All of that said, Peter and Fran's commitment to The Hobbit is total and they will do everything necessary to protect the franchise and the investment made by New Line, Warners and MGM."

It if continues to be delayed...hopefully Jackson will be able to step in and do it himself. (A fan can hope, right?)

No way this is hitting December 2012 now. At the earliest, we're looking at 2013. If that.

The MGM situation will most likely be sorted by the end of the summer, unless they are given another 5 extensions. Then The Hobbit can get the greenlight, and may end up filming at the end of the year/beginning of 2011.

It can make December 2012. That's more than 2 and a half years away. If they film later this year that'll give them two years, which is enough.

The actual shoot for The Hobbit is going to be not unlike the original Lord of the Rings trilogy (i.e. 13-15 month shoot with long pre-and-post production work). It can't make 2012 at this rate.

This is a pretty disheartening blow. Del Toro obviously has a good visual sense for fantasy films, and the longer this keeps getting delayed, the more doubts there are about it ever ending up being made.

Also, Ian McKellen isn't old old yet, but he and several others involved in reprising their roles aren't getting any younger.

The trilogy shoot took 438 days, between 11th October 1999, and 22nd December 2000. Fellowship was released a year later in December 2001.

The Hobbit shoot is expected to last around 370 days, which is 2 and a half months less than LOTR. If they shoot at the end of 2010 and finish at the end of 2011 they can do it.

Well, definately gutted about this, but at the same time, it does free up GDT to make others movies, with the first hopefully being Hellboy 3.

The good news: Peter Jackson may direct The Hobbit

The bad news: He's already signed up to direct the Tintin sequel so he might not be able to.

Jackson met studio representatives yesterday to begin the search for a new director but wouldn’t rule out directing The Hobbit himself if a suitable person could not be found.

“If that’s what I have to do to protect Warner Bros’ investment, then obviously that’s one angle which I’ll explore,” he said. But stepping in as director would be difficult as he had signed writer and director contracts with Hollywood studios for two other films, with one likely to begin next year. “The other studios may not let me out of the contracts.”

Jackson said November was now the earliest start date for shooting, but it depended on finding the right director. “I just don’t know now until we get a new director. The key thing is that we don’t intend to shut the project down.

“We don’t intend to let this affect the progress. Everybody, including the studio, wants to see things carry on as per normal. The idea is to make it as smooth a transition as we can.”

Let the damn Movie die, it seems destined to anyway

I guess Del Toro will do Hellboy 3 now

I just realized that he can now do one if he wants (most likely he will). I'd rather he'd go ahead with that than sitting on his ass waiting for The Hobbit to be greenlit!

Mother ****er! Now they have to find another director. If Michael Bay comes into this picture I'm going to fly down to New Zealand and kick him square in the nuts

God, I find it unlikely, the studio will let him go of those contracts. But my God, the fact there's a possibility of Jackson directing will reverberate my interest and hope.

I'm optimisic. I think we will see this be made into a film.

Reasons I STRONGLY wanted someone else to direct the Hobbit films. :csad:

PJ put love into the Lord of the Rings, and it shows...but I'm not sold on him putting out quality work if the story isn't already written for him.

Bad news day.

Maybe he'll get Spielberg to cover for him with Tintin.

Unless Jackson steps in and directs, I no longer want these movies to get made. While watching them all I will be thinking is "Despite how good this is, it would have been so much better with Del Toro behind it instead".
He put so much into these movies and his enthusiasm for the prject gave me incredible hopes for The Hobbit films. Now with someone else coming aboard and just using all of the Del Toro-led designs to get filming by the end of the year, the same investment in the films won't be there.

Maybe he'll start on a new Hellboy movie now ... we can hope.

The Burton comments got me thinking....

what if Burton and Del Toro made a movie together? Imagine the crazy visual images. Acid-trip ho!

Any ways, I was bummed about this. Sad panda for The Hobbit. Happy Grizzly for Hellboy.

Actually I'd prefer he did In the Mountains of Madness, followed by Hellboy 3.
