if Jackson directs i bet that the movie wont be as good like the LOTR trilogy. and i am sure that fans will complain.

Jackson doesnt want to direct. which means that if he does he would do it to just finish and realese the movie. more like SPielberg doing Indy 4.

True, but I think the studio have finally realised something about HBII that we knew all along, if it hadnt been released the week before TDK it would have made a lot more money, hell, it had a $35-40 million opening weekend as far as I remember, but TDK just blasted it away and took away any chance of it making good bank.

Regarding Hellboy 3 , i think the character isn't well known enough for a mass audience. At least at this stage. If i remember correctly the marketing for Hb2 was using the success of Guillermo post Pan's Labyrinth but it still wasn't a big hit BO wise. I do agree that going up against TDK was a bad move but if HB3 is going to get made , maybe the Universal might consider releasing it during March or perhaps april and definately not in the summer season against some pretty massive blockbusters.

Anyway going back to Hobbit i do agree with Jamie that a dec 2012 release though still possible will probably not happen. There an EW article about this and the official press release is that the studio exec. were looking at a dec 2010 production start. That could mean that the first movie could easily hit a dec 2012 release but i doubt that it's going to happen. WB has already said that they will release Superman in Christman 2012. Personally i think it would be a bad move business to have two WB competing against each other.
Hobbit has the ability to make a billion dollars. Why would you screw that up. Not to mention that this Superman movie may be the last one we will see in a while.

What's going on with WoW? Isn't that under WB and don't they have Raimi attached? THat can definitely make a 2012 slot. I say go for that instead.

i am quite dissapointed that things have turned out this way, but i fully respect GdT's decision to leave the project. There are so many potentially great projects he has lined up and I'm glad to see him move on to them. Perhaps he finally start full production on At the mountains of Madness. I read an interview with him last fall and he had some very interesting comments about the preproduction of that film in regards to new aproaches of special effects with the shoggoths and such, I hope it still happens.

Sir Peter Jackson says he will step into the breach and direct The Hobbit himself if it becomes the only way to ensure the US$150 million (NZ$219m) film is made after the sudden departure of director Guillermo del Toro.




Now before you guys all jump to conclusions , read the article.

The LOTR trilogy was a major cash cow...if the studio sees that they can make more money with The Hobbit, that will become the priority.

In regards to the recent news, I am disappoint. I was really looking forward to Del Toro's take on this franchise, because he's a really talented guy and I think it would have been incredible. Honestly though, I don't blame him for leaving. He was committed for 3 years, and they were asking him to stay on indefinitely since they can't make up their mind when they want to start after he'd already been left hanging for 2 years.

I suppose it's for the best. Del Toro is now free to make movies again, and hopefully The Hobbit will still be made and made well. Hopefully either Hellboy 3 or The Mountains of Madness are next for Del Toro.

It's unfortunate that Del Toro leaves The Hobbit, but I think with the uncertainty that surrounds this franchise, it's probably a good idea for him to leave and focus on other projects. Hopefully Jackson will take over, but given the other projects he already has lining up it's probably a long shot. But until the mess with MGM is finally cleared up, this movie may be in a limbo for quite some time. I just want them to shoot it before Sir Ian McKallen gets too old to play Gandalf, quite frankly.

Will we get a film version of The Hobbit? Absolutely. I just don't think it's going to be this incarnation with this group of filmmakers involved at this point.

It is a major bummer that Guillermo del Toro is not going to be directing these films but I completely understand his situation.

I don't know...i can see Peter taking the director's chair for The Hobbit because there's too much at stake. But I can also see it being a business decision on his part, rather than a creative one. But I don't even know what's going on with the Tin-Tin movie he's directing. With Speilberg's Tin-Tin in post, we haven't heard the developments on the Jackson one.

In some ways, I feel like Jackson kinda needs a movie like the Hobbit, after the mixed reaction of both Lovely Bones and King Kong.

I would love Jackson to return, but I hope he would actually want to do it. I can understand the protection of the investment, but I want him to be just as passionate when he made LOTR.

I feel bad for him. Remember when he said he would never do another huge film after LOTR again? Jeez... it's funny how things turn in.
