It's finally been greenlighted? Thank god!

I just hope that the actors union dispute is sorted out quickly. The films need to be shot in New Zealand. And Howard Shore MUST return to score these films.

Glad to see things are finally moving and yay for Pete Jackson directing! Del Toro would have been interesting too but I'd much rather have him on At the Mountains of Madness.

Dang, six month ago neither of these flicks were looking very likely and now they're both on the way. Good times ahead.

Thank.... GOD!!!!

I am so relieved. Now we can make the 2012 date after all! Now if the world truly does end it won't be as bad because The Hobbit is the last film we'll ever see.

I am glad this is green lit. But if some one even farts on set & it sounds like 3D. I am going to rage! 2D Hobbits only!:cmad:

Man, just when I thought this week couldn't get any better, it did. First the Lizard is the villain in the Spider-Man reboot, Tom Hardy is cast in Batman 3, and now after all this time, The Hobbit is finally greenlit.

Why isn't my head exploding of happiness yet?

This just got interesting.

Things must be getting close on The Hobbit, because casting buzz is getting strong in Hollywood. Word is Martin Freeman will soon be set to play Bilbo Baggins, that Jimmy Nesbitt has been offered a role and that Michael Fassbender is being pursued for another as is David Tennant. Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are expected to reprise Gandalf and Gollum.

I'm really hoping they land Fassbender. The man screams "Bard" to me.

Also, looks like The Hobbit will be shot in digital 3D, which I for one am okay with.

OMFG, I will perform oral sex on anyone necessary for them to get Fassbender.

Just cast him in every role.

But in all seriousness, I'm still pulling for Martin Freeman. I fear David Tennant is on that list as a back-up in case Freeman simply cannot make it work. I do not want Tennant as Bilbo :csad:. At the very least give Tom Hollander a look.

Michael Fassbender is probably being pursued for Bard or Beorn. And I'm guessing Jimmy Nesbitt is being eyed for one of the main dwarves (Thorin, Balin, or Gloin).

You know what? They should!

Who could he be? The archer dude who comes out of no where in the book? Seriously, he came out of nowhere and I wish there was a lead-in.

This is the dude from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, isn't it? This keeps getting better and better.

I find it crazy that the LOTR trilogy was made brilliantly and yet a simple prequel has had so much trouble getting started.

Two years until Smaug the Golden makes his cinematic debut, and blows everybody's face off in all of his epic glory.

This just got interesting.

Peter Jackson and 3D was inevitable. He wanted to do King Kong in 3D but couldn't, he was going to do Tintin part 2, which is in 3D, but im guessing that wont happen now that he will be busy with The Hobbit

I wouldn't call two movies that will span at least 6 hours filmed with a budget of 500 M and written by Del Toro as being a simple prequel.

I can deal with that. So glad they finally got the ball rolling.

Thank God it's greenlit. For the record, I would've taken James McAvoy as Bilbo but I guess Martin Freeman will do fine.

Freeman is a great choice. He just has that Hobbit way about him. Plus, I can actually buy him as a young Ian Holm.

I hope he gets the part. He is a good dramatic and comic actor, and I think Bilbo needs both.

Just to keep the ball rolling-

David Morrissey for Beorn!
Michael Fassbender for Bard!
Kevin McKidd for Thorin Oakenshield!
Simon Pegg as Balin!
Timothy Dalton as the King of the Mirkwood Elves!
Jeremy Irons as the voice of Smaug!

Beat you to it, laddy!

Now watch the rest of it some true!

From March:

Bilbo Baggins - Michael Sheen
Thorin - Brian Cox
Balin or Dain - Brendan Gleeson
Bard the Bowman - Michael Fassbender
Beorn - Ron Perlman
Galion the Butler - Doug Jones
Voice of Smaug - Tom Waits
Radagast the Brown - John Hurt

I have also wanted Fassbender as Bard for quite some time. He would be brilliant.

Everyone wants it! Make it happen!

I quite fancy Tom Baker as Radagast, though he might be a touch chubby...

I do wonder if there is any truth to these articles. Or are they just rumors? Because this all almost makes up for the stalling of the film.

As far as I'm concerned, everything will be redeemed on the first day of shooting.

That too. We need continuity.

We all should sing the Deadpool continuity song.
