Ideas were flying fast and furious on New York Citys East 55th Street this week as Marvel Comics gathered its top creators and editorial staff to break down the comics excitement for the next year and beyond at the companys semiregular creative summit.
Wizard attended and got the following juicy morsels from the participants:
WIZARD: What character or project are you most excited for coming out of this summit?
J. MICHAEL STRACZYNSKI (
Amazing Spider-Man writer):
I have to say the discussion we had about the Ultimate Universe and whats going to happen with Reed Richards and Magneto in a project Brian [Bendis] and Jeph Loeb are working on.
DAN SLOTT (
Avengers: The Initiative writer): I think I showed you Mutant Zero, the mysterious mutant whos a new member of the Initiative, and thats who Im most pumped about. Who is Mutant Zero? Who knows? I know! You know! Its cool, isnt it? Nobody is going to see that coming!
GREG PAK (World War Hulk writer): Im really excited about the discussion we had about ramifications for Dr. Strange coming out of World War Hulk. There are enormous things going on with Strange that I think will be really fascinating.
JOE QUESADA (editor-in-chief): Im still really excited about Spider-Man and all the new stories weve got coming with him.
MARK PANICCIA (World War Hulk editor): Hercules. I think Greg Pak really does a great job writing him in
Incredible Hulk [during World War Hulk] and hopefully well see more of him.
STEVE WACKER (upcoming Spider-Man editor): Venom, for all the reasons I cant say. Im also really digging talking about next years big event.
TOM BREVOORT (senior editor): [
Laughs] Brian Bendis. Im very excited about Brian Bendis and all the work hes going to have to do in a very short amount of time to make all our plans come off. All the plans that stem out of the ending of
New Avengers #31 have got me excited. We mapped that out pretty completely over the next 12 to 18 months and how its going to build and interact with other titles. As far as the Marvel Universe proper, thats probably the biggest thing going on.
I think we got some good headway on plans for the Ultimate Universe too.
AXEL ALONSO (senior editor):
Besides my own books, Im also very excited about the plans for Ultimate X-Men, because its something Ive wanted us to do for at least a year. That the plan to get there is interesting is just gravy for me. The launch pad for Ultimate X-Men for the future really intrigues me. No matter how we get there, its a home run. I should actually be worried because I edit [the X-Men titles] and Im going to have some stiff competition.
ED BRUBAKER: (
Captain America writer): Im really excited for all the stuff they talked about doing with the Ultimate Universe. As much as everything was really interesting, as a reader, Im excited to see that.
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (
New Avengers,
Mighty Avengers writer): Its going to sound selfish because its the stuff Im working on, but Im very relieved and thrilled that for the big event Im working on, the plan stayed in one piece the whole time. If it survives this, it will survive.
I was also getting a little concerned about lack of planning for the Ultimate Universe, but now that has been fixed and there are genuine awesome plans for the next calendar year with me and Loeb. For those who needed it, this will revitalize interest in the [Ultimate] books, and for those who havent been buying, youre going to get some nice payoff. Ive invested a lot of my life in the Ultimate books and to see them living for another year in such grand fashion is a big relief to me.
JEPH LOEB (
Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America writer):
I think what we have in mind for the Ultimate Universe is going to blow peoples minds. I knew I wanted to be involved in the end result; I didnt know the lead-up would be something Id be involved in, but working with Brian is going to make a lot of sense. We want to restore the wow factor that unlike in regular continuity, anything can happen, and there are a lot of surprises left in the Ultimate Universe.
