Some clarification of Jean and Logan and news from Mr Claremont himself:
Couple of general points -- Logan made his attraction plain from the get-go, and while Jean indeed felt an immediate response she also had a fundamental commitment to Scott, which she honored. So did Logan, by backing off. Then she died, end of story, life -- and characters -- moved on.
Scott met Madelyne -- who, as originally conceived, was not Jean, simply her visual twin. That, of course, didn't stop the writer from trying his best to tease the living daylights out of the audience by making them wonder all about it. The fight with Mastermind leading up to the wedding was meant to put that conflict to rest once and for all, for characters and readers. The next step along the path was for Scott to make a choice between surrogate family -- the X-Men -- and real family, Madelyine and the baby; the hole point of the fight with Ororo in the Danger Room and his acceptance of the commitment he made to Madelyne was to show that he was growing up, setting aside the commitment he'd made as a child for the one he'd made as an adult. He was, to use the classic phrase, giving up his "childish" things. In other words, your basic metaphor for life. He'd be available for special circumstances, but the focus of his being was now elsewhere. That was the intent.
Little did we know as we set all that in motion, what was waiting in the wings.
So now, with all of the X-Men structure in place and underway, along comes this primal monkey-wrench. But the key thing to remember is that, as the story developed, both the central characters had changed. Like it or not, Scott had made a commitment to Madelyne, and fathered a son with her, and while "dead" Jean had apparently lost part of herself, the part of herself that she'd lost, was the part that deeply and passionately loved Scott. What remained, while she remembered loving Scott, while she still loved him in a way, was also the part that had an equally strong and passionate desire for Logan. Hence, over the subsequent issues, the ongoing attraction. Logan sensed the change in her and responded, and Jean found that no matter how much she kept telling herself not to do so, she would keep answering those responses.
During "Inferno" they kiss. Jean reintegrates with the lost part of herself -- only now, the love within Madelyne that once was pure, is now truly and remourselessly pissed off. So, Jean's passionate attraction for Logan is now coupled with an equally primal antipathy for Scott. The stage, as they say, is set.
Now we're seeing what happened next. As to where that will lead -- well, let's just say we're not done in this title with surprises and revelations.
(By the way, changing the subject totally to give you all something to look forward to come Thanksgiving and Christmas, I just got the first pencil page from Tom G for #11 -- the entrance of Colossus -- and it is spectacular. If you thought he looked good as an X-Man, wait'll you see how great he is as the Hero of the Russian Republic. Totally impressive. And wait'll you meet his partner! And Smitty's just delivered the "Excalibur" reunion scene from #10, which is also totally gorgeous. Did I mention Sam & Dani & the NM folks as well? Treats galore, stay tuned. It'll be fun!)
