When I saw Alien in the theater I literately would/could not move from my seat. The movie drew you in an made you part of the crew. The whole feel of that movie, the sound, everything said “This is going to be tense.” I remember the catch phrase “In space, no one can hear you scream.” That set the mood. Aliens on the other hand, wasn’t as tense. It didn’t have that OH S%$! feel to it. A good movie no doubt but Alien is so much better.

This is a question that has plauged mankind for over 2 decades....and personally, I refuse to choose..because I really can't decide.
Alien is so original and has such a progressively creepy feel. The design, Giger combined with Scott's direction, just make for a great movie. Aliens follows a basic action movie structure, but it executes it oh so flawlessly. Cameron is a perfectionist.

Again, I can't decide.

Besides returning characters..there pretty much different genres all together, i like Aliens better. But then again, aliens is 40 minutes longer, and is essentially a war movie.

i am agely impaired but I have not had the pleasure of seeing Alien for the first time in a theater, or ever seeing it in a theater...same with aliens, but the atmospher of aliens can be captured on a saturday night...where as the same can't be said with Alien, I feel like a theater first time viewing of it would enhance the movie so much for me

but Aliens is just flat out one of the most entertaining movies ever made, I don't think there are 30 movies I would rather watch, if that even

I love Alien because it's such a great gothic horror film, although I love Aliens for the fact it's such an amazing and well put together action film, and has a great story. And seeing Ripley get to kick some ass was so sweet. So I love them both the same with a slight bias to Alien since I saw it first.

Ummmm they went down to LV-426 in the first one they brought a face hugger back. In Aliens they found rippley and she found out they had made a colony on LV-426. and she got all pissy about it and they sent in the Marines.

Seems like its picking up from the end of Alien to me ;)

clearly you didnt understand what i put....

i meant obviously Aliens had good continuation....its a sequel...but you cant say Aliens is better cos it has good continuation because Alien doesnt have continuation....its the first one...its an original idea nd doesnt follow on....i know Aliens picks up from Alien...but to say Aliens is better because it has better continuation or even that it has continuation is just dumb cos Alien will never have that.....but it still makes it a better film than Aliens.....i know what i mean even if you dont....i just think you need to read things properly before you try to make people look stupid

Well, me too. I wasn't old enough to see either in the theater either.

aliens , i actually have never seen t he original alien

Alien, by a long shot.

Aliens is so action movie generic and really rests on the laurels of the original film.

But the colonial marines where a masterstroke by cameron brash, arrogant and armed to the hilt they where turned into mummys boys by the *****es kids. Like has been said a totally different movie to the first but it was a natural progression rather then a tacked on shoot em up made to cash in on Alien.

I think Aliens is the perfect Sci fi/Horror/Action combo movie, it has the tension and intensity of the first married to some visceral, brilliantly shot action.

The evolution of the Ripley character is handled well and her relationship with Newt as surrogate mother after missing out on her own daughter due to being in stasis is nicely portrayed without being mushy. it also plays great into the finale showdown with the Alien Queen.

The story is an intelligent and natural progression of the mythos and the Colonial Marines are a smart introduction, giving us a sci fi war movie to add to the horror, the way they are stripped of their bravado as the fear sets in gives the movie a depth that most action movies (especially in the 80's ) don't have.

Not saying Alien isn't also a superbly crafted movie (It is), just my 2 cents on why i like Aliens and voted for it.:yay:

Aliens easily wins in my book, the last act is some of the most exciting stuff ever filmed. The Alien in the first one looks far to fake on second viewings and as with all of Scott's films the pacing is too slow for my tastes.

Though I can't deny that Scott made a great sci-fi masterpiece, I must admit that Cameron's work was brilliant, so I am voting for Aliens.

Hey L0ngsh0t, I agree with you, as while both Terminator and Alien were more like horror films with elements of sci-fi, T2 and Aliens opened a new door for B-movies (the first one was Jaws) turning into huge summer blockbusters

we don't see eye to eye on alot but we tend to come together on certain things, good ups

Aliens.

Gotta say- as great as the first film is, some of the shots of the Alien itself just spoil it for me since you can tell it's a guy in a rubber suit.

Well the only scene i nwhich you see a full body shot of the alien is whne he's about to kill lambert and its not the suit that makes it look like a man in a suit so much but the way he walks with his arms so stiff, but still that shot is pretty good as it showcases the beautifull design of the creature, my only gripe is that we never see a full body(from the waist uo) frontal shot shot of the alien. We get shots of him like that but someone is always in front of him
. The bests shots of him for me are at the end when ripley gases him and forces him to get out and we see his dome head and his full face at the same time while he screams for atleast a couple of seconds.

Alien.

When Dallas is crawling through the air ducts, and lights it up.... holy f**k. I rarely jump from a horror movie, but my head went right through the roof at that part.

Bumptacular!

I just bought the trilogy last night. I'm not sure if I like the Alien or Aliens better, yet.

Alien is a freakin' masterpiece. It builds tension to a crescendo with the chest burster scene and never looks back. It's a one of a kind film that has been copied dozens of times. The only flaw is the first SFX Ashe head after Ripley puts it on the table, right before it's Holm with his head sticking out of the table.

Aliens is a long, drawn out mess, that tries to build up tension, but to me, fails to do it. Once the action starts, I simply didn't care that much.

They are both phenominal movies, but I give the slight edge to Aliens.
