What happened?

I watch Aliens and Alien 3 this weekend for the first time, and being a big fan every major action/thriller/sci-fi-ish adventure movie of the great eighties....what happened. Where have all the Aliens and Predators of the world gone. What happened to new ideas. Why haven't we gotten an action movie like that again...with a plot and characters that take themselves seriously. I mean The Rock was fun, Casino Royal was good escapism...hell X2....but what happened to these truly original, truly strong action thrillers. X-Men, Batman and Superman are just lazy franchises compared to these things. What happened to movies built from the ground up; out of fever dreams from Cameron's head (which is where Terminator came from).

We need more of these movies...and fast, have we just used up all the ideas...

We're getting one in 2009 called Avatar.:woot:
But yeah...Whatever happened to films like them?
Everything has gone so big budget and "let's just get this thing out there to make money".

The last film I can remember that I got the same feeling as when I watched Aliens was Jurassic Park.
Since then...maybe The Matrix.

Well, and the Matrix was a good example, my point is like Batman and X-Men mostly write themselves. Someone already laid the groundwork and producers just come in and piece them together. We don't movies built from the ground up like that anymore (Matrix and it's crappy sequels aside).

However, personal plug, a movie franchise (although it's based on a pre-existing show) that could really take off in the hands of someone like Cameron -- Robotech.

I love the `80s as much as the next guy but be realistic, man. Most `80s action films were really dumb.

Nowadays we have great stuff like the Spider-Man series, Casino Royale, etc. But, yeah, we also have crap. Every decade does.

The last great action movie was the Rundown

Oh yeah! The Rundown with Rock was awesome! But, I wouldn't say the last great one. Casino Royale was awesome. Plus, lets not forget movies from around the world. Asia, for example, still makes great action/martial arts films.

I would love to see another Alien film alone without the pretador attachment.
For action I loved Casino Royale great film.

Ah, so much hate for T3. I just love it{the hate}:woot:

We need more flicks like robocop.

We need more talented directors like Paul Verhoven. Did you see the Robocop sequels?! They were crap! It takes talented directors to pull off these types of movies.

I think the Transporters are solid

I'm still on the fence about Transporter 2. I think it gets a little TOO ridiculous, even taking into consideration all the ridiculous stuff in the first movie! The thing about the first one was that as ridiculous as it got, it still felt very organic, and the fact that there's no real plot, actually makes the film better! Transporter 2 tried to have a plot, and it makes no sense! The scene in the pediatrics office is beyond stupid, it plays out like an episode of Three's Company.

I feel your pain.

I'm still not sure what was going through Irvin Kershner's mind when he was doing Robocop 2. I mean, how could the guy who directed the Empire Strikes Back fumble the Robocop 2 ball so badly?

See, I still love Robocop 2, and I don't care what anyone says.

What was the last dark Sci-Fi Action movie....The Chronicles of Riddick?
Hahahahaha

Hollywood realized they don't have to make quality movies to make money anymore.

"Game over man. Game over."

We need a new space expedition adventure/action flick... throw in some extra terrestrials... star Wars prequels don't count cause they were pretty lame... I hope Spielberg delivers the goods with Interstellar... but I really am hoping for a new series to begin

I can way get behind that, although Crank was solid to

I liked that movie alot

If you take Sean William Scott out of it that is...

lol he just annyoed me, should have been like Topher Grace or something

We had one

2 years ago, its called Serenity

no one went to it in theaters so there won't be anymore

Hahaha, Serenity doesn't count as it is...Serenity. lol.
When the TRAILLER bores you to sleep? Trouble.
And if I see one more story about "The One"...some "chosen" bad-ass in an unexpected form.....:whatever:

cuh-RAP

Lol, to be one the fans of these movies is fine. Completely up to you. But I think calling them "solid" action movies is taking things a bit far.

When I think of a solid action movie with no problems, I think of something like Terminator 2. Always will be one of my most favorite movies of all time. Good story, good acting, great effects and GREAT action.
