Blind to get the advantage...

"That's nice. How's Elektra?"

Bruce wasn't expecting me to come out and say it.

But i'm not in the mood for playing games at the moment.

Blind to get the advantage...

That's really pissed me off.

I'm Catholic. Any advantage I have is weighed down by my faith.

Okay, THAT hurt. The blind comment most likely set him off.

"Haven't seen her since I left Stick. But, can you blame me for assuming that? You certainly don't move like a blind man. It's as though...you have a completely different sense...metahuman?"

Lex Luthor had merely laughed off Tony Stark's comment eluding to his knowledge about robotics. Arguing about the half-serious accusation would have only made people suspicious. But that didn't mean that he wasn't angry at Stark's blatant disrespect for him. Luthor took the wine glass out of Stark's hand.

"Now now, Tony, I think it's best if I finish this," Luthor said, "We don't want you embarassing yourself again now, do we?"

Smiling jovially at Stark, Luthor drank the rest of the wine in Stark's glass.

"Ah, that hit the spot," Luthor said smugly, wiping his lips and resting the glass on a passing drinks tray.

"Now, about this Superman," Luthor continued, "I think he is the beginning of a disturbing trend. Reed, men like you are true heroes, using their intellect to further the human race. But when you get something like this Superman, someone who hides behind an alter ego, I would say they are a vigilante at best, and at worst...a menace to society."

<Tony Stark>

Over bearing, smug, narcasistic, peice of...

"Yes, I can see how someone could mistake heroism for a disturbing trend."

Took my wine. MY wine.

"But what interest's me more is who sent that Robot after you in the first place Reed? Not that I doubt your new abilities, but do you really think you'd have been as effective without this... Was it Superman?"

I call a waiter over and take a class of water.

"And... Spider-Man?"

I take a gulp.

"No, no Lex, these people aren't vigilantes. I mean 'Superman' doesn't even wear a mask. These people are out in the open, we've seen them. They aren't hiding. It's the stories of the 'Bat' that make me uneasy. A man stalks the night alleys of Gotham, dressed as a black... it's those sort of people we should be afraid of."

That was quick.

"I'd rather we didn't discuss this in public. I won't take you for an idiot. Don't take me for one. You want to know more... well I could use your help. And from what i've been reading in the papers, you've been using your training with Stick for some night time fun on the streets of Gotham..."

His hearbeat doesn't even skip a beat. Man's a pro.

Matt Murdock, cockiest SOB to walk God's green Earth. He needs MY help?

"While a good portion of the crowd here is most likely too saused to remember anything, I'll have to agree. What do you need help with?"

I move closer to Bruce, and under my breath I begin to talk, just loud enough for him to hear.

"You're right. I do have certain... abilities. And I plan to use them. But I need funding. I've used the money I had saved aquiring two suits and two gadgets, but luck says i'll end up wrecking or breaking them."

I 'look' about, make sure no-ones around.

"I wouldn't ask for charity, nor do I mean to bribe you. But you are the wealthiest man here, and if you don't mind me saying, the more people you have on your side, the more good we can do,"

I stand back and 'look' at Bruce.

"In exchange, all legal fee's would be null and void if you decide to use Murdock and Nelson. I will also help you in any legal stances that you require."

His heartbeat is steady.

Pro.

"Oh, I don't know, Tony. He sounds alright. The Bat, I mean. Way I see it, he's just doing what he has to do to get things done. Forgive me for being frank, but Gotham is nothing like Metropolis or New York. I mean, hell, it's a death sentence walking by yourself at night there. This Bat person isn't so much different from Superman. Different cities, different approach is all." He took a sip of his martini.

"It's the same as marketing. You don't sell the same stuff to the Japanese that you do to the Americans. Both areas require different approaches and thinking. And just maybe this Bat in Gotham thinks that privacy is what he needs to get the job done, could be the reason he hasn't gone public yet."

"God help us all, the man is making some sense!"

Reed and Sue laugh, Lex remains stallwalt, and Ollie smirks.

"I here what you're saying Ollie. Different worlds, different rules. I just wonder the mentality of a man who dresses like a bat and stalks the night. Ok, the people in the bright suits aren't quite normal, but they're trying to be symbols. Make a name for themselves and set an example. The bat's hiding in the shadows. What's he afraid of?"

I turn to Lex.

"Beside Lex trying to hire him for social gatherings"

I tip my glass to Lex, and finnish off my water.

<Matt Murdock>

A Bat and a Devil.

My mother would kill me if she could see me now.

I turn, I can hear someone's foot steps. A new heartbeat.

A woman from the sound of it.

I can smell her too. Nice perfume.

I can't see her, but I can tell that Tony Stark's heartbeat just went up a pace or two. As did Queens.

I wonder who she is.

Dinah sighed and tapped her fingers on the window of the car.

She couldn’t believe she was going to this party. It just wasn’t what she enjoyed. Sure a shindig or two was fun, but she’d almost rather be at home. The least she could do was have driven her motorcycle.
She smiled at the thought. Her motorcycle was beautiful. She’d tweaked it herself; her mother hated it and hadn’t scrimped words with her about it. But mother never scrimped words on anything. Even Dinah’s own plans for her life.
So here she was, playing along with mother’s plans, at least a few of them. She’d promise never to join the ranks of heroes, she was keeping that at least, but for everything else she pushed the limits.
She turned her head as the car pulled up in front of the house. She leaned and turned her head up to take it all in.

Oliver Queen wasn’t modest about his money, but what millionaire was? Or was he a billionaire?
She sighed, it was so hard to keep track.

The driver opened the door for her and she stepped out and gave him a smile as he leaned over in a slight bow.

“This way.” He motioned and she followed him, handing her gold trimmed invitation to the man at the door. He too inclined his head.

“Miss Lance.”

Dinah nodded.

“I believe Mr. Stark is waiting for you shall I…”

“No, thank you. I think I can find him on my own.” She smiled and walked away.

“I’ll just follow the smell of the alcohol.” she though bitterly with a touch of fondness.

She entered the room and stood at the flight of stairs for a second. Her black gown formed to her curves and puddled on the floor, around her neck she wore a small diamond pendent in the shape of a small bird, the neckline of her dress started low and then went up and over her shoulders before dipping down her back.
A tasteful slit up the right side of the gowns skirt stopped at her thighs and showed off leg’s clad in fishnets.
Her long blonde hair styled in a classic form flowed down her back in curls, allowing a small section to cover the left side of her face.

Her eyes traveled over the room casually, pausing briefly on a man standing to her right, she smiled, noticing the shades over his eyes. She inclined her head slightly before turning her attention back to the room and walking down the stairs. She ran her hand along the Bar as she crossed the room. Stopping momentarily to request a drink.

“Virgin Martini please.”

She continued her eyes fixed on her quarry. She reached his side and snaked her arm through his. Dinah tilted her head up and gave him a smile as brilliant as the diamond ring on her left hand ring finger. She gave him a peck on the cheek.

“Darling.” she whispered before turning to the gentlemen around him.

“I hope Tony wasn’t boring you with his take on these ‘vigilantes”.

<Tony Stark>

I smile as she pecks me on the cheek.

"I was beginning to wonder if you'd taken my billions and ran!" I joke.

I turn back to the crowd.

"I'm sorry gentlemen, and lady of course, this is Dinah Lance. My fiance."

"I'm Lex Luthor," he continued, extending his hand, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Lance."

<Matt Murdock>

I almost choke as I hear the words "My Fiance".

Stark getting married.

The world is truly going to hell.

I take a glass of water from a waiter walking past.

I take a big gulp and try to let myself breath again.

It comes to mind the life I live is rather strange when a man announcing his marriage is more shocking to me than men flying around cities fighting robots.

But then this is Tony Stark. The only things more shocking are Bruce getting married, Queen turning pro-iraq and Luthor growing hair.

the return of Christ himself was more likey before tonight.

I shrug, I give Bruce a nod and move towards the balcony in order to get some fresh air.

<Mister Fantastic>

"I am usually a very good judge of character, and I sensed nothing malicious about Superman...he genuinely appears to want to help others. If it wasn't for him, more innocent people would have been hurt today...so regardless, I am thankful" Reed said

"Just because my identity is known to the public, doesn't mean I have anything against heros that choose not to do so. They are probably worried about what would happen to their family and friends if someone found out who they are. Fortunatley I don't have that problem...my closest family is a man made of rock that can bench press a giant robot, another man who can fly and burst into flames, and of course my darling Sue, who is more then capable of protecting herself...now that I would ever want her to do so" Reed said as he kissed her hand.

"I believe their motives and intentions are true, but only time can tell. This Batman character showing up in Gotham city is most intriguing to me. Using fear and darkness to subdue his enemies mentally...very clever...and likewise very effective...he must be a man of intelligence" Reed said

Suddenly a gorgeous lady walked over to the group that Tony introduced as Dina Lance

"Hello, Miss Lance, pleasure to meet your acquaintance" Reed said politely. "This is my girlfriend Susan Storm. Still the proverbial ladies man I see" Reed said to Tony. "That much hasn't changed since College"

"Oh Lex, I can't help it if what Reed says is true,"

I look to Dinah. I can almost sense a scowl coming my way.

"But what can I say. I'm in love now."

Dinah nodded to each of them upon the introduction.

"Your fiance?" asked Luthor, "Miss Lance, what is a beautiful young woman such as yourself doing with a scoundrel like Tony Stark?"

“Every woman needs her project.” She smiled and looked sideways at Tony as he answered.

"I'm Lex Luthor," Luthor continued extending his hand. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Lance."

Dinah took it and shoke it firmly, meeting his eyes with her own, as was her custom. She refused to be brushed off as a blonde bimbo.

"Mr. Luthor, a man who needs no introduction. It's an honor to meet you. I've heard and read so much about you and your company.” She said genuinely.

"Hello, Miss Lance, pleasure to meet your acquaintance" Reed said politely. "This is my girlfriend Susan Storm"

Dinah smiled and reached her hand out to them both. They seemed so honest, like her Uncles and mother.

“Mr..Or is it Doctor Reed? It’s a joy to meet you. You’ve done so much for New York. It’s rather reminicent of the Old Justice Society of America isn’t it? Heroes raising from a dark age.
Miss Storm, You look lovelier than in your photos, and I don’t mean that just to flatter. It’s so nice to know that girls aren’t letting all the boy’s have fun.

And you must be Oliver Queen.”

Dinah raised her eyebrow at him. She'd seen pictures of him, but they hardly did him justice. He was a striking man.

She could tell he'd been teasing Tony mercilessly by the tautness she felt in Tony's arm. She hadn't been a detective’s daughter for nothing.

She smiled and added her own little comment, her blue eyes staring into his own.
"I hear you spent some time alone on an island. All alone, with those animals. Tell me, did you get very bored or were the animals unnecessary." She said cheerfully before gave him a beguiling smile and turning encompassing everyone as a whole into her conversation.

“Speaking of ‘Super’ heroes, I couldn’t help but notice how the conversation turned. Has anyone asked Mr. Wayne on his opinion of a man dressed as a giant ‘bat’ flying around his city?” She questioned, having picked up a part of their conversation as she walked up.

"Ah... Brains and beauty."

I have to smile. The animal burn was brilliant. Masterful. I think i'm going to be very happy with this lady.

"Bruce!" I yell over the room. "Come join the party old man!"

Dinah, Ollie and Reed give me disaproving looks.

"What? He was only talking with Matt Murdock. And he's gone outside. So we should invite him like the gracious, social people we are."

"Ah, Bruce Wayne, the Prince of Gotham."

Luthor looked over his shoulder at Wayne. He was seperated from most other people at the party, busy talking to that blind lawyer from New York.

"I don't believe anybody has asked," Luthor replied, "Has so far he has kept himself to himself. A very private man, Bruce. But at least he knows how to throw a great party."

Luthor raised a subtle, mocking eyebrow in Oliver Queen's direction as he made this last comment. He didn't know if Queen got the message. Luthor hoped he did. In truth, Bruce Wayne was one of the only people in this room that Luthor liked. Maybe it was because Wayne reminded him of himself ten years ago.

"And as for this Batman, he is just part of a bigger problem," Luthor explained, "Batman, Spider-Man, Superman, one inspires another. And they won't be the last, mark my words. More and more of them will be making themselves known, so called 'heroes' who take the law into their own hands. How long is it before some superpowered being shows up, wanting to rule the world, instead of saving it? What happens if Superman wakes up tomorrow, and decides that planet Earth would be a better place if everyone served him? Who would be able to stop him?"

"But then, what happens if one day a man wakes up and decides to kill the president? What happens if you send your kid to school and he gets hit by a car. The world is if's and but's Lex, it's how you deal with it that defines the world we live in. If Superman went insane and took over the world, I have faith there would be enough good people in this world to stop him. "

"But that's the crux of the issue, Tony," replied Luthor, "There are good people in this world, yes. But how can a man strive for heroism, for greatness, when confronted by a God? A selfish God who doesn't share his power with the human race he supposedly wishes to protect. If we look to the skies for a...superhero to help us, we lose our God-given ability to help ourselves. Don't you see? He's making us weaker!"

"Reed will be fine Dinah...I am already aware that I am a doctor, I don't need to hear it over and over" Reed said with a smile, making his attempt at a joke.

They all started talking about costumed heroes again, and Lex's latest comments upset Reed...or at least got him close to upset...it took a lot to really upset Reed.

"I see no difference in costumed heroes taking the law into their own hands as opposed to businessmen doing the same thing with their near limitless wealth and resources" Reed said sharply. "These superhero's have powers which aid them, other less savory people have resources and technology...I see no difference. At least the heroes are out there trying to help others, not further their own selfish goals and desires by using their resources to take what they want. A new age is dawning...an age of heroes who aren't afraid to put themselves on the line, and help others. They will be the ones who stop the people who only wish to further themselves!" Reed said, mildly aggrivated. He grabbed two martini's from a passing waiter, gave one to Sue, and began to drink the other

What happens if Superman wakes up tomorrow, and decides that planet Earth would be a better place if everyone served him? Who would be able to stop him?"

Dinah tilted her head thoughtfully.

"Perhaps. However it seems that the JSA stayed pretty on course. But times have changed this Superman seems to be something unearthly.
The ones I find most interesting are the ones who don't seem to have any power or powers, such as this Green Archer seen around Star City.
The potential of unpowered people seeing him as an example seems dangerous. Who knows how many people could get harmed by fancying themselves as superheros because they can hit a bullseye with a rubber band."

Dinah said diplomatically trying to lighten the mood.
She looked again at Luthor. He was an attracive man in his own light, still he seemed heated about this and it wouldn't do to turn a social gathering into a debate room.

"I suppose their own inner community would be enough of a deterent for taking over the world. Perhaps a different radical opinion would be to arm everyone and allow them to be the deterent for a situation such as that."

<Tony Stark>

"He makes you weak if you let him, not if you accept your limitations Lex. Some men are born superior to others in certain ways. Superman is anything but a God. Trust me, I know that much. If we accept our roles in life, if we know our own capabilities, then there is nothing you can't achieve. Look at Queen for Gods sake. He survived on a island. Him. A millionaire play boy! We are what we choose to be. If you choose to be threatened by a man trying to help us, then I guess you've got every right to be scared. Because you're chosing a conflict that doesn't exist."

"Reed will be fine Dinah...I am already aware that I am a doctor, I don't need to hear it over and over" Reed said making his attempt at a joke.

They will be the ones who stop the people who only wish to further themselves!" Reed said, mildly aggrivated

Lex Luthor smiled in response to Reed Richards' tirade, but his eyes narrowed slightly.

"Fortunately for us, there are no such people in attendance here tonight," he answered casually, "And as for your new age, I'm an optimist, Reed. I believe that the future will see the human race reach new heights, as we strive to continue our upward climb, to touch the stars. I do not want a new age where we hand over all our power and ambitions to...outsiders, a tainted few with unnatural gifts, unfair advantages over the average human being."

"Now steady on Lex, I don't like that tone you just used."

I put down my drink.

"You can't talk down to a man whose family were all caught in an accident. To accuse them of having unfair advantages... that's low Lex."
