I swing through New York and send a notification through my League communicator to Johnny, alerting him that I'm on my way.

I land on the roof of the Baxter Building as Superman and HERBIE 3.0 exit the inside of the building. Superman gives me a confused look, and I shrug, "Teen Titans business from Colonel Fury. Everything good on your end, Big Blue?"

I wait for Superman's answer as Johnny Storm exits too the roof.

"Yeah. I'm working on some things concerning Stamford me and another colleague. We're beginning to think there's more to Amazo than meets the eye."

I look the young man up and down, smiling slightly.

"Speaking of more than meets the eye, interesting fashion choice. Back in black, huh? Hopefully we won't see the same side effects that happened last time you changed your look."

"Yeah, Pete, what gives?" I ask as I step out onto the roof. HERBIE whirs past me on his way downstairs. "I won't knock a guy for trying to make a fashion statement, but the all-black gig went out in the 90's, man."

I want to sigh and roll my eyes...but it won't do much good considering I have a mask over my face. I've almost had enough questions about the costume. "No, it'll be fine. And glad to hear some progress is being made on Amazo."

"Johnny...I got it from Reed. You know that," I laugh. Honestly. Sometimes the kid amazes me. If there's a mirror in front of him he basically tunes everything you tell him out.

"I'm here for you though, buddy," I say nodding to him and handing over the files from the Colonel. "Nick Fury just gave us an assignment."

"That makes two of us, then. He sent me on the trail I'm currently on. I tell you, that man loves to play the puppet master and pull our strings"

I lift off from the ground and nod towards Johnny and Spider-Man.

"Best of luck in what he's got you doing, if you need any back up, Kara is in Smallville. And I'm just a shout away."

I take off, gaining speed and altitude as I climb up higher into the sky

I glance over the files. Pretty technical stuff. (Read: boring.) "Nick Fury, huh?" I say. "Does it involve obtaining a glass eye?"

"Ha! No," if there's one thing Johnny can definitely match me with it's the banter. And flying. Dang I wish I could fly. "Some nut jobs kidnapped an alien princess that Fury put into hiding when he was with SHIELD. He wants us to break her out and find her somewhere safe to live. And after going over her file I wouldn't mind seeing if she's up for joining the team. She'd be one hell of an ally."

When the worlds alien princess leave my mouth, I see Storm perk up. The guy's like a real life Captain Kirk. I'm sure he tried to get into Kara's pants, and Koriand'r most likely wont be any different.

"Down boy," I say as he goes back into the files looking for a picture.

I frown upon discovering that there's no picture of this chick anywhere in the file. Oh well. I highly doubt an "alien princess" would be unattractive. Either way, I suppose that shouldn't be my main concern.

But, c'mon. This is me we're talking about.

"Well, what do you say? Assemble our team? Of course, it's less of a team and more of a small group."

I shake my head, "No, Bobby and Kara aren't coming this time. Fury wants a small team. Stealth is our priority here. The Colonel didn't know who we were up against, but he mentioned he wanted a small team, and to keep it quiet."

I can sense Johnny about to protest going in just the two of us, so I speak up first, "But we are going to pick up someone else en route. Know any quick ways of getting to Gotham?"

"Lightning and thunder is nothing without the heart of a warrior. It was not my power that finally made me worthy to raise Mjolnir. It was my love for another, my desire to serve a greater cause rather than my own interests. Remembering that would serve you well, Ocean Master."

With a mighty punch, Thor sent Orm crashing to the ground, unconscious. With the Ocean Master out of commission, his desecrations of Aquaman's lost companions lost their power, and collapsed lifelessly to the sea bed. Thor turned to Aquaman.

"Thank you for your help, King of Atlantis. Now, I must get this child to safety."

OUaquabanner1.gif

Orin does not even reply to Thor before the hero tends to the captured boy. He simply cannot help but stare at the horrific sight around him. It was bad enough that his half brother re-animated the dead bodies of his Atlantean people, but now that the spell is broken, they dead and rotting limbs are scattered about; the tissue and muscle that was repaired to a degree once again weak and withered.

He crawls on the sea floor, like an infant, only he does so because his stomach feels weak at the moment and he desires to throw up. But he doesn't. Grabbing the skull of his old general Rodunn, he is silent a short moment.

"These grounds will never be desecrated again. If I must guard a dead city, so that the bodies of the dead can rest in peace, I will take that responsibility gladly."

He places the skull back into the seafloor ground, and starts to slowly bury it with some sand. Then, the Ocean Master starts to get up from Thor's hard blow, dazed and confused. Fueled with anger Aquaman charges at his brother with a devastating blow.

"You have disturbed the bodies of the dead. Of my people and brethren!"

aquaomaster2.jpg

"Your hatred of me cannot justify this murderous act, Orm."

Tightening the grip as he clasps his hands together, the Marine Marvel swings hard into Orm's back as the villain tried to recover from the previous blow. The former Sea King has paid heavily for his half-brother's jealously and deceitful actions in the past. But nothing compares to what has occurred these past few days. Days ago he morphed and mutilated the Aquatic Ace's lifelong pet octopus into a hideous monsters, forcing Orin with no other solution short of ending the animal's life. And just earlier he perverted the memories of the dead with his latest magical stunt as he sought to defeat him.

Grabbing the Ocean Master, Orin struggles to not turn his face into mush.

"Why have you always hated me so, Orm? What did I ever do to start this cycle so many years ago?"

aquaomaster3.jpg

"You were born. And though cursed with the Mark of Kordax, it did not matter. Embraced with open arms. Despite that you were loved. You then took my destiny, favored son of Atlantis. You took reign over the Seas. I will forever hate you for it."

"I could ask Reed if he's got anything that might help," I suggest. I decide not to bring up the fact that the Titans are a small team. Then again, I suppose if we're recruiting this alien princess and picking someone up in Gotham...

Wait. Gotham?!

"Who are we picking up?" I ask, arching an eyebrow.

Wait. Gotham?!

"Who are we picking up?" I ask, arching an eyebrow.

"Batman."

Johnny's face drops and a little bit of the color drains away from his face. Man, I wish I could let him stay like that the entire trip, but I can't, "I'm kidding. We're picking up his sidekick, Robin. He's worked with Koriand'r before, and I want him on the Titans as well. He's got invaluable skills."

"Oh..." Johnny says ushering me into the Baxter Building.

"Anyway, I believe you know the team," I continue as Spidey follows me into the living room, where the other members of the Fantastic Four are still standing around. I imagine they've been talking about the news Superman delivered. Truthfully, I'm glad to have this Titans mission to take my mind off it.

"Hi, Spider-Man."

"'Sup, webhead?"

"Spider-Man."

Spidey nods and waves. "Hey, everyone."

"Reed, you got a second?" I ask, pulling him aside. Spider-Man follows close behind. I glance over my shoulder to see if Sue or Ben are listening. They don't appear to be. "Is the Fantasticar ready to go?"

Reed frowns. He hates when I call it that. "You mean my prototype hover vehicle? It's passed all diagnostics tests, but I've never taken it out for a real test run." Suddenly, his brain catches up to him, and he realizes what I just asked. "Wait. Why are you asking?"

"I'm afraid that's official Titans business."

Reed just stares at me. "Do you want me to get Sue involved?" he threatens.

"Okay, okay. Spider-Man and I need to go to Gotham," I explain. Reed looks surprised. "Nick Fury asked us to, personally. He needs the Titans to help rescue a damsel-in-distress, some alien princess or something." He continues to stare at me. "I swear I'm telling the truth."

"He is," Spidey chimes in.

Reed looks at Spider-Man then back at me. "Johnny, without the proper testing, I can't guarantee that the prototype is safe. You're asking me to knowingly put your health at stake," Reed reasons. That's all he ever does: reasons. I live by the code that life is about taking risks. "Besides, you don't even have your driver's license, and - don't take this the wrong way - you have a habit for being...well...reckless. The prototype is not a toy. It took a lot of time and money--"

I put my arm over Reed's shoulder. "I know, I know. And I hear what you're saying. Valid points, wouldn't you agree, Spider-Man?" Spidey looks at me for a moment before nodding. "But this girl's life might be at stake. I mean, doesn't that take precedent?"

Reed looks hesitant.

"Besides, this could be your field test!"

What can I say? I know what makes Reed tick.

"Alright, fine. But I expect it back in one piece!"

Smiling, I turn to Spider-Man and wink. Turning back to Reed, I put my hand out and say, "Keys, please."

Reed hands over the keys to the hover car and Johnnys runs off towards the other side of the building. Reed looks down at me, "Make sure he brings that thing back in one piece, okay?"

"Will do, Dr. Richards," I respond, heading off towards the direction Johnny went. I push open a door he left cracked behind him, and find the Torch sitting in the driver's seat of the most beautiful piece of machinery I've ever seen. A floating car. I mean flying car. The thing is sleek, and sexy, if I do say so myself. Leave it to the smartest man on the planet to build something like this.

"Holy crap! It's beautiful! Completely hover capable? How does it obtain enough lift for flight? I don't sense any emissions. What powers it? I am going to have so many questions for Reed after this mission. I mean, this could revolutionize transportation and energy consumption crisis," I ramble on out loud. I look up and see Johnny giving me the look Gwen does when I prattle on about chemistry. "Oh...my bad."

I climb into one of the four passenger seats, "Okay, let's move. Anywhere in Gotham will be good. Knowing Batman and Robin, they'll know we're there."

********

The Fantasticar, as Johnny called it, sets down on a rooftop in downtown Gotham City. I hop out and look over at Johnny, "I am totally getting a chance to drive on the way home."

"Keep dreaming, spider. I'll be driving with this alien chick in shotgun," I say with a wink. I'm half-joking. Kinda. I look around, expecting something to happen. Hey, it's Batman. You never know what that guy's going to pull. "He's probably on the way, but just in case."

I flame on, hovering just above the roof. Spider-Man stares at me in confusion.

"Batman's got a bat-symbol, right? Well, let's see what he thinks about this!"

"Agreed. I already know who will be me my top priority. I've had dealing with him before."

***

"It'll just be another moment, Mr. Wayne. Thank you for waiting."

I give the secretary a sly smile as I lean over her desk. "Oh, I don't mind waiting at all when the company is the company is this nice. Wouldn't you agree...."

She looks down at her work and blushes. "Kathleen."

"Kathleen...Kathleen,"
I say, rolling the name around. "That's rather exotic."

She starts smiling. "Not really..."

"You're too modest. I bet you can be very...exotic."
Now it's her turn to give me a sly smile.

CLICK

Kathleen jumps at the sound of the door opening and starts looking busy.

"Bruce! How have you been?"

I take the extended hand. "I'm good, Ted. Really good. How about you?"

We walk into the office. "The economy's been hurting us, but we're staying afloat."

"I know what you mean."

"Oh really, I hear that Wayne Enterprises is doing just fine."

"Well, fine's a relative term, Ted,"
I say with a wink.

"Haha, that it is." He takes his seat behind the desk and indicates the chair on the opposite side. I take the offered seat, finding it quite comfortable.

"So, Bruce. Tell me. What can Kord Industries do for you?"

"Well, I was thinking there was an opportunity for our companies to do some business together."

Although he tries to hide it, I can tell he's very interested already. Kord's been trying to partner up with Wayne Tech for years. And he's struggling to keep his company in the black. "What kind of business?"

I lean back in my chair, undoing the button on my jacket to appear more relaxed. "We're working on something for the military."

"Military? I thought you pulled Wayne Enterprises out of the military contracts."

"Weapons design and manufacture, yes. But we're working on a new defensive system."

"Missile interception?"

"Something like that." I lean forward. "I hear Kord Industries is working on a new advanced scanning technology."

There's the slightest flicker on Kord's face, but he covers well. "And where did you hear that?"

I lean back again and shrug. "Around. You know how it is in the trades. Whispers and rumors, guy has one too many scotches and lets slips things he shouldn't. And that scanning technology is exactly what I'm looking for. We've been trying to develop our own next gen scanning tech, but problems keeps setting us back. Now...if you actually have something we could use..."

"You're hoping I'd be willing to license our tech to you?"

"I'd prefer to buy it outright, if possible." I can see the wheels spinning in Kord's head. Sell the the tech and get a nice infusion of immediate cash to stay afloat. But license it and he could make a lot more money in the long run, assuming he can keep his company running that long. But either way, it means the same thing.

He has the scanning technology.

"I'm sorry Bruce, but we don't have anything like that." It's a lie. And the only reason to lie about it? He's already given it to the military and has been bound to secrecy. Or maybe he's just being a good businessman and wants to keep a potential competitor out of the loop. I need to make sure which is the case.

"Well, I'm sorry to hear that. Those rumors got my hopes up."

"Heh. I bet they did. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on something like that myself. If there was anything else..."

"Well, maybe there is. I mean, just because the scanning tech didn't pan out doesn't mean we still can't do business."

A slow smile spreads across his face. "What did you have in mind?"

A fresh night. I leap across the gap between two buildings, and run onwards towards the next gap. I haven't had the chance to stretch my legs out since the whole thing with the Joker, and now was as good a time as ever. Bruce is apparently, according to Alfred, doing some business with the League, which leaves me to keep an eye out for a bit.

The streets, for once, were on the quiet side, and I pull out my line launcher and fire it off, before hurtling across the busy street below to the other side. I get my bearings for a second and take in the sights of Gotham.

I stare at the burning four embedded in the sky for a second, before I pull out my grappling hook and leap off in the direction of it. The Human Torch. It's got to be. I heard he might be turning up, but didn't realise he'd make such a show about it. I was nearing it now, and flipped onto the building that it hung over, withdrawing in my grappling hook.

I look up to see Spider-Man in a new costume, standing in front of some kind of plane...thing. I wrap my cape around me and look up at the Human Torch in the sky for a moment, before turning back to Spider-Man.

"Hey Spidey, nice suit," I nod to him as I step away from the edge, and further onto the rooftop.

"What can I do for you and hothead up there in Gotham?"

"Hey Spidey, nice suit," I nod to him as I step away from the edge, and further onto the rooftop.

"What can I do for you and hothead up there in Gotham?"

Robin appears suddenly. He's getting good, a lot like Batman. I lean over and quietly whisper to Johnny, "Say what you will about my costume, at least I'm not wearing yellow, green, and red."

I then turn and address Robin, tossing the folder yet again, this time to the Boy Wonder, "A group of wack jobs have kidnapped Koriand'r. I know you had worked with her before, so I figured you would be interested in helping. This assignment comes directly from Colonel Nick Fury, I'm sure you know the name."

Robin nods and I continue, "And I wouldn't mind seeing what you can do in the field. If I'm impressed, I would like to have you join the Teen Titans, our team."

I was going to invite him to join no matter what, but it won't hurt to have him on his A game.

"And while we're still on the topic, is this Koriand'r chick hot?" I ask Robin. Of course, I'm not sure I trust the judgment of a guy who lives with Batman and runs around in boy shorts. Spider-Man shoots me a look, and I say, "What? I'm just making sure we have all the proper intel."

I turn back to Robin.

"She totally is, though, right?"

I catch the folder and flick through it quickly. Koriand'r, good fighter and a good ally. Fury seems to have managed to dig up a lot of information on the whole thing. Shouldn't be too hard, and worth it to help a friend. Plus, oppurtunity to get on a team with Spider-Man? Hard to turn down.

"Sure, count me in," I smile to Spidey, handing back the folder.

I stare at Torch for a second, astounded he actually asked. This guy can't be serious...

"I'll let you make your mind up when we get there..."

"Speaking of which, where is 'there?'" I ask, taking the folder from Spider-Man. "Hmm. This place she's being held is just outside the city. Should we hoof it or take the Fantasticar?"

"We take the car. It's our best chance at a quick getaway if we need one," I respond, and the three of us climb back into the hovercar, and take off towards the fringes of Gotham, where Koriand'r's last known position is. We set down outside what seems like a cult compound. Armed guards patrol the grounds, and a tall fence surround it.

I notice one building has more guards in front of it than the others, "That's it. That's where she is. Lots of guards though."

Looking up at Johnny I ask, "Care to give us a diversion? Robin and I will get her out of there. Once you take care of the guards and we get out of the building, you'll pick us up in the Fantasticar."

They both look at me without saying anything, "Sound good?"

"Diversion, huh?" I say with a smirk. This is the job I've been preparing my whole life for. "You do know I live with Ben Grimm, right? I've turned being annoying and distracting into an art form."

I land the Fantasticar a safe distance away, and we all hop out. I flame on and hover just a few inches above the ground. Can't risk them seeing me just yet.

"Right. I'll coax them into playing pin-the-tail on the Torch, and you guys break into the detention cell and save the princess, just like Star Wars. Just give me some kind of signal, and I'll circle back and get the Fantasticar."

I take the skies, and I'm sure the guards see me now. "Evening, gents! Fine night for a flight, isn't it?" I announce as I soar over their heads. They open fire, and I perform a barrel roll of Star Fox proportions to avoid the spray of bullets. "Woah, down there! Don't you know who I am? I'm the Human Torch of the world famous Fantastic Four!"

"You're a dirty mutant!" one of the guards cries out. "Your kind isn't welcome here!"

I roll my eyes. Mutant haters. Should have figured. I strafe the area around the facility, lighting the grass on fire but being careful not to set the whole place ablaze. Circling back, I dive straight at the guard who yelled, tossing a fireball into his chest.

The Torch rockets off, and I can hear the sound of gun fire erupt into the night. I nod to Robin, "They're playing our song."

I sprint off towards the compound, with Robin following quickly behind. He keeps up with me, something that really impresses me. When we get close to the compound I spring off the ground and shoot a webline to get over the high fence, and Robin does the same with his grapnel. I can't help but smile. He keeps up well for someone with no powers.

Slamming into a door, I roll into what I assume is a makeshift prison, and am greeted by a cadre of guards at the ready. Luckily these bozos don't have guns, but still, there's a lot of them. "Whoa! Sorry for interupting your Van Dame fan club meeting guys!"

A man in a fine suit stands behind the assembled guards and announces, "Ah, Spider-Man. Robin. How good for you to join us. I can only imagine you're here for your alien friend. Well, we have no intentions for parting with her. She now belongs to the Friends of Humanity, and shall be wiped clean from this Earth. We don't need the help of powered individuals. The human race will continue to reign supreme on their own."

"Friends of Humanity"? Terrific another anti-mutant, anti-meta organization. Just what we need.

He then motions to the guards, "Kill them."

As the guards begin to rush us, I turn to Robin, "Go! Find Koriand'r! I'll take care of these guys!"

Robin nods and runs down the hallway as the guards reach me. I spin, driving my heel into some of their faces, cracking a few jaws in the process. One dives at my legs, which I evade by jumping to the ceiling, "I don't see much 'reigning supreme' going on here fellas. I mean, come on how do you expect to beat me?"

I web up on of the guard's heels and yank, dragging him across the floor and knocking down some of his friends in the process. My spider sense goes off as two armed men appear at the end of the hallway. I drop down from the ceiling as a spray of bullets slam into the place I was just perched, and respond by sending a flurry of webbing balls as a retaliation.

One strikes one of the men in the head, knocking him out, the other is distracted, and I throw one of the other unconscious guards at him, knocking him out as well.

I breath a sigh of relief, but more guards turn down the hallway. I sigh again, "Can't it ever be easy?"

Secluded in a diner booth, Deputy Mayor Arnold Krohl talks strategy with his campaign advisor.

"People are getting tired of Mayor Hill, that's true," Krohl says. "But why would they vote for me, Tommy? I mean, I've been his deputy for eight years now."

"Because you're not Hamilton Hill," Tommy replies. "It's either you or him."

"What if someone else runs? It's a possibility."

"Not too likely. Nobody on the city council is strong enough. Janice Porter hasn't been DA long enough to make a run and Jim Gordon has no aspirations past being police commissioner."

"What about David Kane? I got a feeling he'll make a run, he's starting to get more spotlight on him at the public safety meetings."

"Pfft," Tommy says with an eye roll. "He can never run as a law and order candidate, what with his wife and all."

"Well, if you say so, Tommy. That's what I'm paying you the big bucks for."

"That and the promise I'll be your deputy once you get in office. So, I'll work on some more campaign stuff and work on your press release when you announce, sound good?"

"Of course."

Raising up from the booth, Krohl and his advisor shake hands and Tommy walks out the door.

In the black sports car just down the road from the Adams Street Corner, Johnny LaMonica and Skinny Pete sit.

"Ya'll got a line on the clown yet?" Pete asks.

"I haven't got anything, but Max is working on something."

"Is Dillon...," Pete ventures cautiously, "is Dillon all there? I mean, mentally."

"He's got a few screws loose, I think. But who the **** doesn't have a few loose in this business?"

"True, but how many of those people also shoot lightning out their hands?"

"Point taken."

Both men turn their heads as a tapping noise on the passenger side window draws their attention.

"You selling?" A disheveled woman asks the two men.

"Take it down to the corner," Pete curtly replies.

The woman nods and goes down to the corner, purchasing her drug of choice from the young boy selling. The boy looks over her shoulder at the SUV that parks across the street. Councilman David Kane steps out of his car and looks at the woman.

"Marie," he says with a hint of sadness in his voice as he crosses the street. "Give the boy his stuff back."

"Ain't no refunds, man," the corner boy replies.

"I don't care about that, keep the money, just take the drugs back."

"You don't tell me what to do, David," Marie snaps. "You're not my father."

"But I am your husband. Our daughter will be home from school in a half hour. You want her to see mommy with a needle stuck in her arm, passed out on the couch?"

"You don't understand!"

Kane knocks the vial of drugs out of his wife's hand.

"Ya'll take this **** somewhere else," the corner boys says to the husband and wife.

"More than glad to," Kane replies. Grabbing his wife's hand, he drags her across the street and into his car.

From their vantage point, LaMonica and Pete watch.

"Breaks your ****ing heart, don't it?" Pete asks.

"Yeah, cry me a river."

In Hamilton Hill's office, Deputy Commissioner Josh Grogan slaps down a report on the mayor's desk.

"Gordon cheated."

"How is that?" Hill asks, looking through the report.

"When he appeared before the public safety committee yesterday, he presented a report that showed crime is down in the city. But he fudged the numbers, juked the stats. Crime is actually up by 4%."

Hill looks through the report, and then looks up at Grogan.

"Did he do this or did you?"

"Does it matter? You want a way to put him under your thumb, this is it. Either he plays ball, or you fire him for these phony numbers."

Hill nods, staring off into space.

"And that Major Crimes Unit, it's still active?"

"Alive and kicking. Doing God knows what, investigating God knows who. You and I both know the former DA's reach extends beyond the drug corners in the westside."

"Okay then. Thank you for this info, Josh. I believe it's time I have a sit down with our dear police commissioner."
